Our squad next season.....

Post by shabba » Wed Mar 16, 2022 9:26 pm

Hey all,

Just some rambling to start a little discussion.....I wonder what our squad will look like next season, who do you want to keep, who can go and who would you like to bring in?

My general thought is to move on a few, bring in a few and not turn over too many players in order to keep many who will be settled and know their role and the playing style.

At present if we break it down:

GK:

Walton -must keep
Hladkey - ideally keep as a backup
Holy - release

RWB:

Burns - must keep
KVY -ok to keep as can play both sides, not the worst of backups

LWB:

Thompson - assume will return to Brentford, but I don't mind him if he was to stay but I think ideally we want to get a better option if we can
Penny - ok to keep as a backup but shouldn't be 1st choice

CB:

Edmundson - keep, solid at this level and possibly above
Wolfie - must keep, the guy has been a rolls royce for us since KMC came in
Donacian - must keep, solid and works so well with Burns

Burges - keep, solid backup, good pro and happy to be 4th choice
NEW CB - ideally either bring Baggot in, or loan him and get 1 more CB for cover/rotation - could Nbada be good enough for that?

CM:

Morsey - must keep
Evans - probably keep, seems generally ok
Bakinson - unsure, not a bad option but maybe we should aim higher if possible
Carroll - release, think he is out of contract? he is tidy enough and would have him as a backup but IMO he is blocking the path for El Min & Humpreys
El Miz - unsure really - I guess he is Evans backup?
Harper, transfer or loan if KMC doesn't think he is good enough - don't think he has even got into the Crewe team
NEW CM - must get Morsey replacement, unless Humpreys can be that

Attacking Midfielders:

Celina - like him - finding his flow now, but doubt we can keep him after this loan? he is special but I wouldn't break the bank for him
Chaplin - keep, like him alot
Aluko - keep, really like him and think he can do another season in league one even if he doesn't play every game
NEW -Given it could only be chaplin let we may need 1-2 more.
Dobra, he looked great pre season but not sure he has set league 2 alight?
Edwards - need to see him more once fit, could he be a Burns backup or even play as a 10?

Strikers:

Bonne - release, can go back to QPR, love him and his passion for the club but he isn't the man to lead our line IMO, happily have him as a backup but that wouldn't be possible
Jackson - keep, I feel we should try and extend his contact, he gives us a different option and is doing well under KMC
Norwood - unsure! good enough for this league, especially as a rotation option
Piggott - transfer, hasn't worked for him and I dont think he fits the system
Simpson - transfer if he doesnt sign a new deal, get a big % sell on set in that deal too
NEW Striker - we need a 1st choice top striker

SO any ideas on players to sign? Same Jay Matette went to Sunderland as I rated him.

Unliekly we could get Prem players but here is those coming out of contract
https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/premier-league/end
endevertraege/wettbewerb/GB1

Schlup or Peiters would be nice as a LWB
Jay Rodriguez or Ashley Barnes would be brilliant as a strikers but likely out of reach (and 1 year options)
Tom cleverly would be a great CM but as above

Championship players out of contact
https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/champio ... bewerb/GB2

Brooks and DIaz are the picks but will have high level interest.
Tom Lawence was brilliant when he was here before
Joe Allen, old but might be a good partner for Morsey?

Anyway sorry for the long post! Love to hear your thoughts on our squad for next year, PS this is ALL based on us being in League 1 - the play off dream is alive but I feel the recent draws have killed the real chance.

Very nice post and great discussion topic. It’s a bit early to talk about who we may bring in, but I pretty much agree with all of that as far as current players. I do think a few players will be available from KM’s contacts, at least I’m hopeful there will be a few.

Regardless, we’re beginning to look like the real deal again! A breath of fresh air from all the dross we’ve had to endure.

Yes its so nice to be having the conversation of 'why isn't Aluko playing' rather than 'we have no good number 10's at all'.

I agree KMC may have some ideas on players he would like, but I guess that also needs to pass the data dashboard test ;). I think the overal recruitment will improve as time goes on, where we ideally see players coming in who can be developed and either grow with the club or sold for profit to fund the next batch. (Brentford model)

Well after some time has passed I still feel the same on the squad.

I think everyone would agree we badly need a striker and a left sided wing back. Possible a CM if we don’t sign Bakinson, but it might be an easy option to sign him - rotate with evans and then focus on those other two positions.

I do wonder if we will go for two young players on loan, maybe there is a promising young striker out there who we could take - using the managers connections. Unsure who that would be though as I don’t know the youth players so well since I gave up football manager ;)

I guess we might even see some data based move via the new recruitment team and possible for an overseas player if the work permit situation allows for it.

I think we will sign Bakinson , he’s improving as the season has gone on (less mistakes).

I feel we need an experienced striker (maybe two) for this division (and that doesn’t necessarily mean old) as our main strikers. Along with Jackson that’s give us 3 senior strikers. This along with Celina, Chaplin and Aluko we’d have a good stock of attackers. I’m not sure a couple of younger loanees will have what it takes over a physical 40 odd game season, to be primary striker targets.

We might need another Morsy type of midfielder , but perhaps El Mizouni can play a roll ? Then we’d have Morsy, Evans, Bakinson and El Miz in midfield.

Defence : clearly the current players will be here . I’d add to that defensive squad , Baggott and a new Left back… we still have KVY on the books which I suspect most of us have forgotten about .
We have a clear problem with the left side of the squad / team. It makes us unbalanced and overly reliant on Burns, and opponents are now wise to his influence on the team and have started to nullify him IMO.

Goal keepers : Walton clearly #1. Would Haldky want to stay ? I’m not so sure . I don’t personally feel he’s good enough anyway. So potentially a new back up GK with Haldky moving on.

In my overall view not a huge amount of change to the squad is needed, but the strikers and left side of the team are the key areas to address. I just hope it’s not from the Man Utd academy !

I'd have a look at our 3 number 10's as well. Do we need all of Celina, Aluko and Chaplin? All technically good players who've played at a higher level.... but do we get enough out of them? Could we get more out of a more physical, direct number 10? I don't think its just the strikers or the left hand side. Norwood had one chance and took it. The strikers just don't get enough chances. We need a genuine LWB, but I'd look at that number 10 position and look if we can add something different. Could be we can't afford Celina anyway. Just think we don't need all 3 of them who are all very skilful, but lack physicality.

Not really sure how good El Mizouni is TBH. Not sure he could step into Morsy's shoes. In which case, I'd bring in a tough experienced midfielder and th3n maybe we haven’t got space for Bakinson in the squad. Or we move on El Mizouni. No point in stock-piling midfielders.

I'd loan out Baggott. If he's as good as some make out then he should get a decent loan at L2 level. Ndabas done that for the last couple of years and he must be ahead of Baggott in the pecking order. Doing well at Salford so he's earnt his chance.

I do wonder if McKenna has got as much as he can out of this squad and its all now about getting the right kind of players in the door to make us step up a couple of notches.

I personally think we potentially need as many as Three new strikers, I don't see, or particularly want Bonne, Norwood and Pigott here next season tbh, as for Jackson, if he stays he stays, he offers something different but if he goes too so be it.

We definitely need a LB/LWB as a matter of urgency, send Thompson back and keep Penney as back up. I would hope to keep Bakinson, I like him and if he can continue to improve, especially his passing, he would be an asset, MOTM for me yesterday, I prefer him to Evans who just drifts through games offering very little. I agree with Tang on the Three number 10's, we don't need them all and as such I would not be bringing Celina back, he has good games but too few and far between. We need another tough Midfielder to compliment Morsy and Bakinson, again not convinced El Mizouni is anywhere near good enough.

I would also not be surprised to see a new CB come in with Burgess perhaps going, his rick at Oxford and then that howler yesterday, is he reliable enough ? For me KVY can go too, a total sicknote tbh. Hopefully next season we will also see the real Kyle Edwards, so much to offer but so far failed to deliver.

Tang: I see your point about the number 10 position. Maybe we need a Walters or Murphy type of player. Not sure if Piggott was meant to be that tbh…but if so it hasn’t worked out.

Number 10 role:

Out of Celina, Chaplin, & Aluko, the choice is difficult tbh because in many ways they are all so similar. Each player can be on his game one week and off it the next. If it’s goals you want from that position I’d go with Chaplin ( he’s about the only one that actually looks to shoot!). If you want creativity , Celina would probably be better than Aluko, and he’s younger.

Is McKenna ever going to ever go with 2 strikers in the team? I’d say unlikely. So maybe it’s a case if targeting one really good solid striker, and sorting out the number 10 position. My biggest gripe about our “ attack” per sa, is that we individually and collectively almost have no one willing to take on the responsibility of actually shooting at goal. Now is this a personnel issue, or one of tactics/ coaching? Because we simply do not shoot at the opposition goal. We try to pass our was int9 the box and pass it into the net. It’s just ridiculous!

In defence, well we all recognise the left side defensively and in attack is a major weakness atm. So I’m fully expecting that area to get sorted.

One more thing about the 10's. Although, it's not exclusively about these players taking set-pieces - but they usually are involved and we're just not getting the ball into the right areas often enough. Would have thought the likes of Celina, Chaplin, Aluko would provide better delivery.

A set-piece specialist would be nice to have added to the wish list.

Well it's patently obvious that the squad assembled by Mr Coq has not been good enough this season. I'm not saying necessarily that those he brought in are all bad players, more a case of the current squad cannot play well together as a team, and at the end of the day that's what counts.

Rather than go through all of the current squad, I'll just list below the players I don't want to see here next season, and the reasons why:

Harper - not good enough
Evans - not good enough
Thompson - useless
Carroll - useless
Edwards - not good enough
Pigott - not good enough
Bonne - not good enough
Jackson - not good enough
Chaplin - useless
Burns - too inconsistent, and a passenger when he's not in the game

Replace those 10 with 5 of quality who can fit into the team, and I think we'd have a good season

On striker targets, Cole Stockton (Morecambe) is a player I'd love us to sign, a striker who really does know where the net is. Sadly I can see Championship clubs being interested in him.

A number of people said that about Piggott. Probably the same about Jackson, Norwood etc. I suspect they may go a different route.

We would be crazy to ship out Burns. He has been player of the season by a distance for me. Yes, he has been frozen out at times and occasionally inconsistent but if that is the criteria then the whole squad and manager himself would be on the out list! We need to work out how to utilise him better and prevent those games where he has less impact. Not sure where we would find a better winger in division 3 so to suggest we get rid would frankly be a poor choice in my opinion. Still - if McKenna decides to do that then he must have some serious players willing to drop all the way down here! Lets see.

I think Rossi must be on his own on that one. Burns has been great along with Donacien down that right-hand side. They've been the season highlights, for me, playing some great stuff down that wing. If we want to free up Burns then we have to get stronger in other areas of the pitch. Hardly his fault that we're so much stronger down that right-side and the opposition target him. It's really a compliment to him and illustrates where we need to improve.

It certainly isn't the first time that's happened on this site over the years
Funny how we all see things differently, but for me Burns and Chaplin were by far the worst signings in a squad that was badly put together (or, to be perfectly candid, thrown together with little thought as to the outcome).

Agreed. If we strengthened our left side (and even through the middle) it would certainly give opposition teams more to contend with! As an opposition manager you look to see where a teams threats & weaknesses are and set up to nullify/exploit these. Virtually every single Ipswich fan can see we offer little down the left, so it is not hard to work out how to cut off our supply lines. Sadly most players who are nigh on impossible to freeze out play at the very highest level. I believe Burns would still give many Championship defences problems.

As a slight aside, i wonder if playing Aluko as more of a left sided player would help? I am sure in one of our games, Sone was played there (maybe for only part of the game) and, along with Burns on the right, caused the other team lots of problems. Or am i imagining things? :?

Well, that sums up the soccer fans. Only a few posts apart, one guy reckons a player is POTS, another reckons he’s a passenger and needs shipped out. Thats why forums are bloody superb though. Great avenues for discussion.

I think this underlines Gary, why we need the left side to our attack sorted out in the summer. It would stretch opponents. At. All they have to do is put 2-3 on Burns and that’s our attack gone. It’s too easy for opponents atm.

That may well be true Liz. Well, I've no doubt that despite what I want, there is no way that KM will offload Burns. So hopefully with a more threatening left side next season I'll see something about him that I've yet to see.

ha - the weather there is more than balmy, it's bloody hot - minimum mid 30'sC during the day and rarely drops below 28C at night, and it's so bloody humid too - you can never get away from it. But yeah, the beaches are great.
