Pre Match Thoughts - Mike

Town dished up Six of the best on Tuesday evening as they got their Papa John's trophy campaign off to a flying start, yes it may have only been Northampton Town and yes it is in a tin pot competition but the fact remains Town dished up some good Football and created numerous chances, most of which were converted, even more pleasing was the fact that it was pretty much Town's second string which proved the point that Town have some serious strength in depth these days. It didn't go unnoticed on the night that the likes of Portsmouth and Sheffield Wednesday also played weakened sides but failed to get the job done.

There were some excellent individual performances from the Boy's in Blue with Dom Ball, Richard Keogh, Kyle Edwards, Greg Leigh, Cameron Humphreys and Marcus Harness all putting in some really good shifts, Ball and Edwards in particular really stood out while Keogh dished up exactly what we all expected him to with an assured display that oozed composure and class. Kyle Edwards looked like a player at last as he caused the Cobblers defence all sorts of problems as he helped himself to Two assists. Not for the first time this season I just found it a good all round team effort with every member of the side playing their part.

Seeing youngsters coming through is always something to excite the fans so it was good that on the night we had Three doing themselves no harm at all with Humphreys, Siziba and Alexander all enjoying the occasion, with Sone Aluko having to go off with a nasty looking injury it would not phase me at all if Humphreys were to be called upon to fill in should the need arise. So with Arsenal U21's and Cambridge Utd to come in the group stage there is no reason whatsoever why Town cannot progress through to the knockout stages. Not only does it give fringe players the chance to get some game time it also keeps the winning mentality going with the chance of a trip to Wembley not to be sniffed at, yes there's a long way to go before that becomes a possibility but it is a possibility nonetheless.

Saturday see's a return to the Bread and Butter of League action with a long haul trip up to Accrington Stanley, never an easy place to go and not a happy hunting ground in the past for Town, that said this is a different Animal these days and Town will be hell bent on maintaining their unbeaten start to the season while preserving their place in the automatic promotion places.

Along with Town and Portsmouth Stanley are the only other unbeaten side in League One which tells you this is no easy game, they have become something of the draw specialists already with Four draws from Five games, Two of those draws came against Charlton & MK Dons which are tricky games so total respect needs to be the order of the day if we are to get the win, the hosts will be keen to maintain their unbeaten start to the season too while protecting their home record.

Personally I can't help but think Town will have too much class on the day and our attacking style may just prove to be too much for them here. Should Town go on to secure the win it would be Four from Four on our travels this season and that would be some achievement. Trying to second guess Kieran Mckenna's starting Eleven is no easy task but I can see him going with pretty much the same team as started against Barnsley with maybe Harness coming in for TJJ, of course should Conor Chaplin and Wes Burns fail to make it it could well be all change. One player who will be buoyed by Tuesday evening will be Freddie Ladapo who finally broke his goalscoring duck to lift a bit of the pressure that was building up on his shoulders, what price he goes on a run now ? It can only be good for everyone concerned. Town win. COYB'S

Dear god......, a stark reminder (based on the Crown Ground photo) --->> Ipswich are in a league against a team whereby if you welly it out for a shy, you could smash a window in someone's conservatory. Come on, Kieron....., BIG 3pts please.
Side note: Its actually not unlike the hedgefkrs isn't it? Not sure if they can afford house extensions there though.

Nice write up......, although, quote, "what price, Ladapo?"........, hmmmm. Hoping he does go on a run, but on a run scoring goals,....., not on a run collecting the ball for the corner taker.
Will be a difficult game as they'll defend and then defend some more. Hopefully the defence is ready for counters and Ladapo starts that league run.
2-0 away win

A ground where we have struggled to get a result in the past. Both teams are undefeated in the league and I would not be surprised if this remains the case at full time on Saturday.

The Wham stadium, what the f*ck is that. Andrew Ridgley do an opening ceremony or something. Label it Blondie or The Jam, something of better musical taste.

Keep it short, voted to win. Didn't even bother to check their last five score result in that confident enough we'll win it tomorrow. Something of a famous opposition name but Town will prevail this and (with it) reclaim rightful position at the league summit.

Predict the line-up time :)

Walton

Burns

Edmundson
Wolfie
JD

Davies

Evans
Morsy

Harness
TJJ

Ladapo

Suspect we'll see Adahme from the bench too. Camara won't make it, Aluko out and Chaplin maybe on the bench as I wouldn't risk him to start if he has had a niggle.

Walton - yip 👍

Burns - nope ( injured?) Jackson

Edmundson - yip 👍
Wolfie - yip 👍
JD ? ( poor defending for both goals ?) - Keogh?

Davies Nope (subbed with knock), Leigh?

Evans - yip 👍
Morsy - yip 👍

Harness- yip 👍
TJJ - nope ( more physicality needed?) Adahme debut?

Ladapo- yip 👍

I think McKenna will demand a certain level of performance and we shipped 2 poor goals b Barnsley and I wonder if JD might be dropped for poor marking for both (as I saw it in replays) ?

In defence, I could see a possibility of Burgess coming in against his former club, bringing a big physical presence. Also maybe Keogh. But probably not both.

Again thinking about a combative line-up, I wonder if we might see Dom Ball or even the fabled three-man-mid of Ball, Morsy and Evans.

Wouldn’t mind seeing how this goes, with Morsy pushing forward.

Yep I think you have it spot on. Unless of course Chaplin is ok to play ahead of TJJ.

The physical shout regarding the defence is certainly on the table I suspect.

I’m not sure about a three man midfield against this side though, not enough attacking threat. The way we play seems heavily designed around 2 number 10’s running riot between lines.

I agree about the defence, but not about ditching JD. He's surely got credit in the bank. And who else can do his CB, RB and wing back role? And he has a unique relationship with Burns. Defending from corners could be dealt with on the training pitch. Or bring in Keough for better organisation/ leadership. Its Woolf/Edmundson who are likely to be dropped. Could be Burgess coming in as he's very good aerially.
Not sure also by a 3 man midfield? Why? That feels like we're thnking too much about them and not us thinking about our strengths . Let's go for the win and if we get a lead we need to sit on... then maybe bring on a extra defensive midfielder, but can't we go with what's put us at the top of the league? Keep tinkering to a minimum, especially the defence and midfield.

KM Won't be changing tactics any time soon and no way will he play the Three of them in Midfield together, there is also no chance of JD being dropped despite his poor game against Barnsley.

Unfortunately Lief Davies is playing who is far to lightweight for the bombardment that's coming this afternoon. Surprises
me KMc has not picked Greig Leigh for his superior ability in the air.

No Edmundson which is a plus though, Jackson up front in preference to Ladapo, no Chaplin today.

Every passing week getting increasingly more assured that Kieron knows what he's doing --->> realising Ladapo is a duffer. And speaking of duffers, a bit like Lee Johnson here @ Easter Road. Big game ahead for that clueless git.

Needless yellow given to Davis on the half way line, I'm not impressed with him at the moment.

TJJ and Jackson are ineffective. Town are under par with the first touch in the final third..Hopefully 2nd half will be better.

I joined the game after about 10 min and despite a lot of possession we’ve not been particularly threatening. At the moment I can’t see where the opening goal is likely to come from although Sam Morsy does get himself into some great positions and had one opportunity where he should at least have hit the target rather than blast over the bar.

We do well against teams that allow us to play football but this is League 1 and it won’t happen every week.
