El Tel was a local legend in this neck of the woods where he lived for many years. Six years ago this month we spent our wedding anniversary at his Hotel La Escondida which he ran with his wife Yvette. They were fabulous hosts and he was happy mixing with guests and we chatted about his career and especially how he came from England to Spain. Unfortunately he had to sell the hotel in 2019 following his suffering from dementia and as far as I know they returned to SE England to be closer to family.

He was such a lovely man, so generous with his time and I will always treasure the hour or so he shared with me which was very special.

RIP El Tel and Condolences to Yvette and the rest of your family and close friends.

He wasn’t very old was he Andy? None of these players / managers from the 70’s era seem to get past their mid 70’s which is below the national average.

RIP El Tel x

As Mike said he was 80 nearly 81 when he died but he has been ill for a while. I must admit when I look around our golf club we have a huge number of golfers in their mid 80’s playing golf 3 times a week and playing well with decent handicaps. 👍

If hadn't read about it here earlier would have been none the wiser. It's a shame, didn't realize he'd been ill but what a career Mr Venables endured. A manager of high caliber with standout achievements to his name, can recall years back at QPR then Barcelona. Lost both an F.A Cup and European Cup Final in career there before finding better success at subsequent postings.

Could just have easily had a european championship win in '96 but some things aren't meant to be. Shame with this news, he was a fine team coach with a number of achievements. A fine standalone individual with it.

Condolences and respect to the immediate family.

I always liked Terry Venables. A real character. I was at the Euro 96 semi final v Germany - Gazza sliding in but missing the ball, Southgate pen miss and the 'golden goal' that wasn't etc. Fantastic emotions that day until the pen miss and then just silence... Terry made that all possible and football is a bit less than it was after todays news. RIP Terry.

Sad nonetheless isn’t it. Glad he got into his 80’s though , so many in the game dont for some reason.
