Trevor Whymark
Has passed away. Always remember his 4 goals against West Brom when we beat them 7-0. If I remember correctly it was also Mariner’s home debut that day.
RIP Trevor.

Re: Trevor Whymark
It was indeed Mariners debut, was there that night, great performance. I always remember the reporter after the game interviewing the West Brom keeper John Osborne, he asked him what he thought of the goals, to which Osborne replied, " you tell me, you saw them better than I did"Shed on tour wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 11:51 amHas passed away. Sad news indeed - RIP.
We all have opinions about who was Town's best ever striker. In my opinion he was the best - but even if not the best he was without doubt the most complete.

God, this is a big of shock! What a player he was. Deadly heading the ball in. He could literally just " hang" in the air and jump so high. His timing was impeccable.
RIP "Radar"

Just wiki'd him......., Alzheimer's? Not an expert on anything medical but I wonder if there is link between regular heading of the ball and what has happened to him.hallamblue wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 6:54 pmDeadly heading the ball in. 100% is marko.... and footballs in those days we're heavy.
Paul Mariner, brain tumor
Emlyn Hughes brain tumour
Charltons bros. dementia/ alzhiemers
Jimmy Greaves, dementia
Stan Bowles dementia
Chris Nicholl dementia
To name but a few and all these players die relatively young compared to general population .... they also now like MND to head trauma in sports. A fair few rugby players have been diagnosed with it in their 40's, and of course Rob Burrows, and Marcus Stewart.
Not sure what the research evidence is regarding the impact of a head hitting football , but the speed at which a ball is traveling would probably feel like heading a brick.
People often die in RTA's from brain injury caused by a phenomenon called " contrecoup" ( means counterblow) where the brain sustains an impact injury ( bleed) on the opposite side to that of the initial impact as the brsin is shunted in the opposite directikn from which the force hits the head. So it "bounces" bavk and forwards inside the hard outer case ( the skull). The issue in sport is the longitudinal effect of repeated supposed, low level impact on the brain everytime a ball is headed or there's a forceful ( sudden stop?) tackle in rugby. There's a high prevalence of brain injuries amongst defenders and strikers in football because they header the ball most.
I think Alan Shearer recently took part in a piece if research , had CT scans etc....
