R.I.P Rik Mayall

A place to chat about anything thats not football related. Most of the threads in here are completely pointless which is why people keep coming back and back. As the forum title suggests, feel free to make any post you want on any subject you wish. It also has Adult jokes (so be warned) which is the other reason people keep coming back.

Loved this guy for so many reasons. Great comedian and actor. Growing up I first saw him in the film Drop Dead Fred. Brilliant film if you like slapstick comedy. Will be missed greatly in the comedy world I think :(

Thanks for posting, Lucy . Well worth his own thread.

I felt a lump in my throat when that was on the news earlier. Arguably one of the funniest guys in comedy. Not only writing it, but acting it as well. My teenage years were watching loads of The Young Ones. Legend.

RIP RIK, you will be missed. :(

I went and saw "Bottom" live at the Edinburgh Playhouse in the 90's, Lucy. Was just prior to his quad accident . The show was amazing. Sore sides from laughing when leaving.

This is indeed shocking and very sad, a modern day comedy genius in truth. Does anyone know the cause of his tragic death yet ?

The media seem to think it was something to do with his quad bike accident he had.

All that's been said is that "there were no suspicious circumstances".

For me the best tribute came from one of his closest friends - Ade Edmondson

There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish b*stard.

RIP Rik Mayall, you will be sadly missed by so many people.

The news was to an extent surprising and wouldn't have expected anything. Not a fan of his comedy and didn't find Mayall amusing in any capacity but still an established / recognized actor and take this opportunity to offer condolences to his immediate family at what must be a difficult time.

Few years ago my cousin and her American husband were on holiday here from Seattle....., my son was watching old reruns of the "Young Ones" on TV, and Matt said in his American accent, "What the hell are we watching here?" He was more confused than anything else. Not saying Americans don't "get" the humour, but I'd imagine it's lost on many. (Similar with Scottish sketch shows being lost on the English. Lol. )

I think if you want to see slapstick humor then Keaton or Laurel and Hardy fit the bill well enough.

Point being, it worked to an extent for them but from what I saw of Mayall's work (with Edmonson for example) didn't generate any tangible amusement. The routine of bashing each other over the head with kitchen utensils wore off quickly and it's been done so much better in times previous.

Just saw this thread... I was very surprised and shocked he'd died at such a young age. I loved the slapstick humour of the Young Ones; it was simple and raw. It almost seemed like the 'violence' was poking fun at traditional slapstick gags. The four characters were for me a very accurate reflection of society for the time. Growing up in Suffolk, I think my group of teen friends had a Punk, Hippie, Nerd, and one could argue that I was the normal one albeit a Rocker with long hair and a leather jacket. RIP Rik, thanks for the laughs!
