What are you listening to?

A place to chat about anything thats not football related. Most of the threads in here are completely pointless which is why people keep coming back and back. As the forum title suggests, feel free to make any post you want on any subject you wish. It also has Adult jokes (so be warned) which is the other reason people keep coming back.

I gave this a spin today. Been a while.

Great stuff. Bought it on vinyl many years ago, got a CD copy too. The first 2 Jeff Beck albums with Rod Stewart on vocals were brilliant at the time.
Aye, not a Rod fan, too much coke and pink pants for my taste, but I do like him on those early Jeff Beck albums.

Another RIP too, old personal favourite fwiw

I played If I Could Only Remember My Name a couple of days ago. He was responsible for some great music.

While he's not to my taste really, he was a great songwriter. And I do have a copy of the 3-cd set Burt Bacharach – Magic Moments - The Definitive Burt Bacharach Collection. A very talented man.

And what I'm not listening to...

Nicky Hopkins, The Tin Man Was A Dreamer. Session pianist, played on the early stuff by the Who, the Stones and loads more. Bought this album last week, released in 1973. Went to play it for the first time today. Dropped it and it broke. So I'm not listening to it. Bugger.

Bugger. Bad luck Andy, did the same with my copy Lumpy Gravy.

Went to out biannual local record fair today grubbing around with all the other grey haired vinyl nuts. Slim pickings but I found a tune I had not heard before.

Don't see that stuff in my side of the world too often.

I think that’s a bit of a rarity. I’ve never seen a copy.

Quite how one recommends a Bristolian '90s twee-pop cover of a naff '70s floor filler at 01:18 in 2023 on Town fans site is yet to be determined, but here we have it.

I confess it's another one I've never heard of. But then there's a lot post-1980 I haven't heard of.
Currently trying to work with a pounding head (heavy cold, not alcohol-induced!) while listening to stuff playing randomly from my hard drive. Currently playing: Pete Seeger, "Round And Round Hitler's Grave" - I think dating back to the 1940s.
That's been followed by Fleet Foxes "Sun It Rises"
Next up: Flying Burrito Brothers, "Dark End Of The Street", one of my all time favourite songs (but not my favourite version). I prefer Richard & Linda Thompson's version, which is just beautiful.

I have a copy of The Gilded Palace Of Sin, great cover! A Lee Hazlewood production so a little bit bent as usual.

The song above comes from a 1990 thing called Alvin Lives (In Leeds), apparently a charity release in aid of the Anti-Poll Tax Campaign. A bunch of indie bands covering '70s disco hits. Found a copy years back and it wormed its way into my collection somehow. Here's a bit of social history for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Cy2J40DEgs

Just heard that David Lindley died yesterday. He was part of Kaleidoscope ( the American band, not the British), played with Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, and so many others as well as having a solo career. Described by Rolling Stone magazine as a maxi instrumentalist ( he played too many instruments to be merely a multi instrumentalist), apparently every room of his house was full of different instruments. Apart from guitar, banjo and violin, he could play hundreds of others - most of which I’ve never heard of, coming from countries so over the world.
A quick flick through Wikipedia’s selected discography suggests I have 22 albums that he played on, but I guess the real number is over 30.
One of my musical heroes.

You sound like my mate, he likes him too, got some of his cast-offs here somewhere, El-Rayo-X or some such, maybe others. I should dig them out.

Video not available in England apparently.
I didn’t realise that it isn’t my collection. I knew there were contractual problems that prevented release of some Donovan albums in England and others in the USA but I would have sworn I had a copy. I’ll put it on the list to hunt down…

I’ve been playing a few singles lately. Currently up to date with all my vinyl albums and CDs copied onto a hard drive, now working through the singles. Starting on the Es today. Duane Eddy, Everly Brothers, not sure what else is lurking. Bye Bye Love is the only record I ever got rid of. It was my first record, summer of ‘57. I was 3 and a half. Got rid because it was a 78 and I have nothing to play it on.

Mate you beat me by about 18 months, still remember the singles I got for my 5th birthday, big event. One was by The Chipmunks, Rawhide by Frankie Laine and, under the "guidance" of Mum, The Young Ones.

Now. The Chipmunks I can be forgiven for, and Rawhide is definitely the only Country single I've ever bought.

I see Ray Shulman has died. A member of Gentle Giant, (after the band evolved from one-hut-wonders Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, and also the Moles).
It made me think about the music industry. Gentle Giant were, in my opinion, unique. No one else sounded like them or made music anything like theirs. They made numerous albums, all instantly recognisable as Gentle Giant. Regardless of whether or not you liked them, I don’t think these days a group so individual would get the chance to make so many albums.
