Re: What are you listening to?
Good to hear Out Of Time is still going. Every time I'm back in the UK I make a trip round to Ipswich and visit, have used up my luggage allowance with heavy bags full of records from there on a few occasions.

Top of the league?
Won't tempt fate with "We Are The Champions", so here's a Carpenter's cover:
Shonen Knife - Top Of The World

Re: What are you listening to?
4 purchases today, all CDs.
Fifty Foot Hose - Live And Unreleased. (Disappointed to see it is a partly-reformed version of the band, recorded in the 90s I think)
Woody Mann, JoAnn Kelly & Son House - Been Here And Gone (All sadly no no longer with us; saw Woody Mann a few years back, a lovely evening)
Van Der Graaf Generator - Godbluff ( one that was missing from my collection)
Peter Hammill - Nadir’s Big Chance (to replace my much-played vinyl copy.)
£7 the lot. Can’t be bad.

Re: What are you listening to?
Saw Peter Hammill (solo) support Marillion back in the early 80s. Weird really. Hammill was a hero of Fish and here Hammill was supporting him!
Need to be in the right mood for VDGG. Do like them though.

He (and they) are indeed strange. I can’t think of anyone else who is remotely similar. Not every day listening for sure. Nadir’s Big Chance is quite different to the rest of his solo output. Supposedly recorded as “Rikki Nadir” as the punk within him trying to get out! All pre-punk of course.

Re: What are you listening to?
And to show that not everything i buy is obscure, today’s purchased at 99p each are:
Cliff Richard “Cliff Sings (1959) and Me And My Shadows (1960)”
A double cd of two early albums. I used to have an EP (remember them?) called Me And My Shadows featuring 4 tracks from the LP. I was about 6 out 7 at the time.
The other one I picked up was 30 Years of Maria Muldaur, a sort of best of. Always loved her, before her big hit she made 2 albums with her then-husband Geoff Muldaur, and before that they were both in Jim Kweskin’s Jug Band when she was still Maria d’Mato. Jim Kweskin still plays live in the States, and I was lucky enough to see Geoff Muldaur a few years ago at Norwich Arts Centre. Going back to today’s cd, I must have nearly all the 19 tracks already, many on vinyl, and is just convenient to have them together on cd.

Re: What are you listening to?
VDGG, first live act I seen, Colchester Uni c.'70. Was forbidden by parents to go and went anyway, must have hitch-hiked. Turned up home late Sunday arvo, family crisis. Such is youth.
Nadir's Big Chance is another thing though, first punk song, Johnny Rotten mimics Hammill.
Side note. Went to see him one time at some poncy art place in West London somewhere (brain will find it if I try). Mate was a big fan. Tripping our brains out early '70s (who hasn't been there). After he spent half an hour pissing around with getting the sound system just f**king perfect we left him to it. Meh.
edit: brain has found it, The Commonwealth Institute

Re: What are you listening to?
That is hilarious. Same for me although no where near as bad, (Sunday arvo
)
Went to see AC/DC Back in Black gig against the laws of the parents……… and i almost got away with it, (touching distance)…… but the bus broke down on the way home.
Busted.
Mum shouted, “GROUNDED”
I replied, “What was that?”
Deaf after the gig.

Re: What are you listening to?
I love this thread
In January there is a summer concert down here featuring :
Simple minds
Collective soul ( one-off my favourite bands)
Texas
Pseudo echo (big in my teen years )
You might recognise two of those acts Marko
Can’t wait, bought vip tickets.
Annoyed I didn’t see icehouse when they were down a few years ago ‘man of colours’ is one of my top 3 albums.

Icehouse. '82, Sydney, and "Hey Little Girl" was on every radio station on high rotation.

Re: What are you listening to?
Didn't ever see the appeal of the band Texas. They were very good a Glastonbury back in June, but not a fan.
Simple Minds seem to get better with every new release though ......., strange one. Bands like U2 have consistently became worse with each new release, (imo of course) ...., but Jim & Co get better with age.
Cue Saint to tell us Jim's a Buoy!

Re: What are you listening to?
Yes Jim Kerr is a Celtic fan, it's widely acknowledged.
So is Rod Stewart (allegedly) although he's not even Scottish (or Irish)
U2 incidentally were real good at one time or another, owned albums like Rattle and Hum, The Joshua Tree etc back in the 80's but they've gone off scene since former releases. The theme they did for one of the Batman movies was arguably one of their finest.

Remember Kim Wilde “Kids in America”? Saw her live at the Hammersmith Odeon in the 80s. She was hotter than an egg on a bonnet in Texas in August. Great show!

Re: What are you listening to?
Such a brilliant album. I bought it when it first came out in 1971. Pretty sure it was an import copy as I remember it has a thicker cardboard sleeve. US sleeves were always thicker than UK sleeves.Mauswara wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 4:08 amIn view of our cup draw:

Played it just the other day; lyrically it is a great ecological protest. The title track is hippie ideology but a warning of what we are doing to the earth. Over 50 years later we are still doing it.

"Blows Against The Empire" shades it for me, but yes. Bloody hippies.

Yep, both excellent. To think they evolved into the bland Starship.

Wagner's Mogst du mein kind / Daland aria Act II Die Fliegende Hollander
Not on the same level as Ride of the Valkyries although keep in mind it's a separate opera piece altogether

Played that album (Parklife) a lot when it first came out.

Re: What are you listening to?
Whoa, the Light Album. Don't think The Beach Boys ever made an album without something horrible on it, but then are the real gems too even in their banter era. The 11 minute disco version of Here Comes The Night is ... different. No Brian as he was in bed for a couple of years but this one's saved by the brother's songs. 50p is fair :-).
One LP from that period which I do like is The Beach Boys Love You. Brian got out of bead and made a synth-pop LP. Johnny Carson is a bit mental though.
