My neighbour came round for a meal tonight. My music of choice:
David Grisman “Hot Dawg” for an instrumental jazzy folky start.
Dory Previn “Mythical Kings And Iguanas” because I love her voice, and she wrote some very personal songs.
Martin Simpson, Andy Cutting and Nancy Kerr “Murmers” for a bit of folky genius.
And finally Oscar Peterson “Night Train” Classic jazz piano.

Haven’t played any of them in ages.
Earlier on today I played John Fahey “The Legend Of Blind Joe Death” and Gordon Lightfoot “Summertime Dream”.

And today’s delights so far:
The Animals, “Animal Tracks” followed by The Bevis Find, “Inner Marshland”. Essentially just one man, Nick Salomon, playing virtually every instrument. Guitar freakouts, weirdness, even a bit of Sooty & Sweep. Recorded in 1987, strong hints of late 60s/early 70s psych.

Haha, Then Play On is their best by 8 points minimum. I have a local issue of the Ultimate Spinach album, wasn't so long ago I played it, I probably don't need it.

Jackie Leven, one of my musical heroes.
At a time when I was getting bored with music (the tail end of the 70s/start of the 80s) he burst through with the magnificent Doll By Doll who made 4 albums. I picked up the first having read an article in the great Zigzag magazine. After Doll By Doll he made a number of solo albums.
He had a troubled life in many ways including drug and alcohol addiction and a physical attack where his throat was slit that stopped him singing for a while.
A great voice, some brilliant songs.

Ah, the first Velvet Underground & Nico album. Sadly, only have a reissue. I only ever saw an original once (with the peel-off banana sticker on the cover. They say that very few people bought the album initially, but everyone who did went out and formed a band.
Post-Velvets I only ever bought Lou Reed's Transformer and a couple of John Cale's. Cale's were strange, I'm sure one has a cover of Heartbreak Hotel.

That's different, I like interesting cover versions. The only Cale solo album I have is Vintage Violence. I did have a '66 mono US original of VU&Nico, "second state" cover peeled banana though. Was fairly rough, swapped it with a friend for a rare white labelled UK '69 copy of Dr. Strangely Strange's Kip Of The Serenes.

I have a CD copy of Kip Of The Serenes, very nice.
Yes, a daft hobby. I should stream really but I just keep buying. Probably about 3000 albums and CDs in total, I guess 1500 of each. And my kids will just bin them when I die - and they'll curse me for the inconvenience!

All the time, 9. Refuse to pay for any sports channels. I listen to Open All Mikes on BBC Scotland Sportsound most saturdays (if not acquired an Easter Road ticket) …… and listen to all Richmond Tigers games on the AFL App.
Very entertaining.

Yes, Unconditionally Guaranteed is the only pre-80s Beefheart album I don’t have.
I remember when Safe As Milk came out, I guess about 1967. I was amazed, never heard anything like it. Today it sounds quite normal. A great album though, featuring art Cooder I believe, who then quit because he didn’t want to tour.
