Wk.6.EPSOM DOWNS,THE DERBY Saturday July 4th 21

A place to chat about anything thats not football related. Most of the threads in here are completely pointless which is why people keep coming back and back. As the forum title suggests, feel free to make any post you want on any subject you wish. It also has Adult jokes (so be warned) which is the other reason people keep coming back.

History of the Epsom Downs
The first recorded race was held on the Downs in 1661,[3] although a local burial list of 1625 refers to "William Stanley who in running the race fell from his horse and brake his neck" and in some sources racing is recorded as dating from the 1640s,[4] so it is likely that racing was established much earlier than that.[5] Epsom is referenced in the diary of Samuel Pepys in 1663 and Charles II is said to have been a racegoer there.[5] By 1684, Epsom had a clerk of the course and from 1730 was hosting twice yearly race meetings.[5]

At Epsom on 3 May 1769 the famous racehorse Eclipse had the first of his many victories in an undefeated career on the turf.

Aidan O'Brien could saddle up to six runners in Saturday's Cazoo Derby at Epsom after the five-day confirmations were revealed on Monday lunchtime.

Bolshoi Ballet, High Definition, Kyprios, Sir Lamorak, The Mediterranean and Van Gogh are the remaining Ballydoyle hopefuls in the 19 entries for the Classic, with stablemates Hector De Maris and Sandhurst taken out.

Dee Stakes winner El Drama was among others not confirmed, as well as recent Gaillinule Stakes scorer Earlswood, the once-raced Gloucestershire and Cocked Hat Stakes second Yibir.

4.30 Epsom Saturday: Cazoo Derby card and betting

Etonian, Stay Well, Taipan and Seattle Creek – all big-priced outsiders – will also not be contesting the £1.125 million race.

Irish 2,000 Guineas hero Mac Swiney, Fairway Stakes winner John Leeper, Dante winner Hurricane Lane and Newmarket Stakes scorer Mohaafeth remain in contention and are prominent in the betting.

In early jockey bookings on the BHA site, Oisin Murphy is aboard Adayar, William Buick on Hurricane Lane, Silvestre de Sousa is jocked up on Lone Eagle and Jim Crowley will maintain the partnership with Mohaafeth.

James Doyle is booked for the ride on One Ruler, Andrea Atzeni will be aboard Third Realm and Tom Marquand partners Youth Spirit.

MONDAY 31st May

LATEST CLASSIC CONFIRMATIONS
Atzeni expects more from 'surprising' Third Realm as Bolshoi Ballet hardens.

Image
More of the same? Andrea Atzeni and Defoe conquered Epsom in the 2019 Coronation Cup and the Italian-born jockey will be hoping for a repeat aboard Third Realm in Saturday's Cazoo Derby
Edward Whitaker

......................
Andrea Atzeni admits his Cazoo Derby mount Third Realm continues to surprise him and is hoping that is again the case at Epsom on Saturday, when he will be among the leading home-trained runners taking on the might of Aidan O’Brien and Jim Bolger.

The Lingfield Derby Trial winner was among 19 to stand their ground on Monday for the Classic, with Bolshoi Ballet hardening in some places as favourite.

The 15-8 and 7-4 available on Monday morning about Bolshoi Ballet gave way to a general 13-8 but, while many of his major market rivals were easy to back, Third Realm was steady at 12-1 with most layers to provide Atzeni with a first Derby triumph.

......................................

Atzeni is retained by Third Realm’s owner/breeder Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, but missed the ride at Lingfield in order carry the same colours aboard Without A Fight at Ascot.

Atzeni said on Monday: "He won at Nottingham and I had the choice to ride him at Lingfield, but he doesn't show a lot at home, which isn't a bad thing, and he won the trial quite nicely anyway.

"It looks like he'll improve for that run and he's won on fast ground and that trial on soft ground, so he's fairly versatile, although I'd prefer a bit of rain. It doesn't matter if we don't get it,

that's a good ew bet Dave, horses wont be declared until Thursday but 19 runners is what they allow in this race so should be OK.

Strong pace in Derby will suit classy High Definition, says Aidan O'Brien

Image
High Definition: leading contender for the Cazoo Derby
Caroline Norris (racingpost.com/photos)

Aidan O'Brien, the master trainer responsible for the top two in the Cazoo Derby market and seeking a record-extending ninth win in the race, expects the strong pace at Epsom on Saturday to bring out the best in High Definition, the stable's apparent second string.

Bolshoi Ballet heads the Derby betting and goes into the race as O'Brien's number-one contender, but the trainer believes there have been valid reasons for High Definition hitting flat spots in his races, adding that the Dante third has "a load of class".

Bolshoi Ballet to be sole Ballydoyle runner in Derby as Dettori gets Leeper ride

Bolshoi Ballet: hot favourite for the Cazoo Derby..
...............................................................................
Aidan O'Brien has revealed a major shift in plans for Saturday's Cazoo Derby on the eve of the Classic's declaration stage, with Bolshoi Ballet likely to be his only runner among six possible candidates he had left in the race.

Dante third High Definition, who had been the long-range Derby favourite over the winter before his stablemate surged to the head of the market with impressive victories at Leopardstown this season, appears likely to wait for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

Frankie Dettori would likely have been aboard High Definition and his absence allows the 50-year-old to partner John Leeper

.........................................................
Dettori switches to John Leeper

One man not disappointed by High Definition's defection was Ed Dunlop, who trains John Leeper for owner-breeder Cristina Patino.

Adam Kirby had been booked, but only because Dettori was likely to be engaged on an O'Brien horse

Wolfie's Tip

Third Realm
..: Currently 10/1
Jockey; Andrea Atzeni
Trainer;: Roger Varian

Image
Third Realm is clear in the Lingfield Derby Trial

Won a Nottingham maiden on his return in April, and took a big step forward when landing the Lingfield Derby Trial last time, impressing with how well he handled the downhill run into the straight. That augurs well for his chances of handling Tattenham Corner, and while it was soft and Lingfield, the going was quick for his maiden win. Shortlisted.

BETTING FORECAST 5/4 Bolshoi Ballet, 13/2 Mac Swiney, Mohaafeth, 7/1 John Leeper, 9/1 Hurricane Lane, 12/1 Third Realm, 20/1 Southern Lights, 25/1 One Ruler, 33/1 Youth Spirit, 40/1 Adayar, 50/1 Gear Up, 100/1 Mojo Star.

COMMENTS
Adayar Has scope but improvement is needed and a more conventional track may suit better
Bolshoi Ballet Made very good impression with recent Group 3 win; looks sure to stay 1m4f; fine prospect
Gear Up Group 1 winner at two (1m2f, heavy); just a respectable reappearance 5th in the Dante
Hurricane Lane Showed fighting spirit to win at Newbury and the Dante; bred to stay well; solid claims
John Leeper Progressive in minor company; should be suited by 1m4f; complex task early in career
Mac Swiney Two Group 1 wins on testing ground; not dismissed on quick going; major potential at 1m4f
Mohaafeth Big step up in class over new trip but visually exciting when winning 1m2f Listed latest
Mojo Star Promising in defeat in novice/maiden company but a mighty leap forward is needed
One Ruler Group 3 winner; chased home Mac Swiney on final 2yo run; query about 1m4f on drying ground
Southern Lights Maiden winner on reappearance; no inroads on Bolshoi Ballet in Group 3 over 1m2f since
Third Realm Convincing winner of Lingfield Derby Trial; a handy type who can improve further
Youth Spirit Nothing flash in earlier runs but pleasing win upped to 1m4f in Chester Vase; has a squeak

agree i think its a forgone conclusion the winner, and hardly worth the bet,

All White and myself picked 2 horses each for the oaks today, just for fun, :?
i picked Snowfall to win. and Mystery Angel ew. would have been a nice straight forecast.

£5 Win Hurricane lane.

£ 2-50 EW Year Up.

It's not a good Derby this year IMO.🐴
agree i think its a forgone conclusion the winner, and hardly worth the bet,

All White and myself picked 2 horses each for the oaks today, just for fun, :?
i picked Snowfall to win. and Mystery Angel ew. would have been a nice straight forecast.

1st .Snowfall..11/2
2nd..Mystery Angel..50/1
Oh dear it's always the way when you don't have a bet🤭🤣
probably if i was putting actual money on them i wouldn't have picked them lol

It gets worse as my other ew choice was going to be Divinely came third at 20/1

The Tricast paid out : £5,052
The CSF:paid out £265.54

one of my worse memories was, i was in the Que at Cheltenham to put a tenner on Desert Orchid when these Welsh guys i was talking to said put your money on Norton Coin @ 100/1.
I laughed thinking idiots, So it had to happen aye, apparently they had been backing it all that week at prices up to 200/1. :|

I think Dessie came 3rd
