Week 9. THE CURRAGH Saturday / Sunday

A place to chat about anything thats not football related. Most of the threads in here are completely pointless which is why people keep coming back and back. As the forum title suggests, feel free to make any post you want on any subject you wish. It also has Adult jokes (so be warned) which is the other reason people keep coming back.

The Irish Derby is a Group 1 race run under Set Weight conditions for three year old colts and fillies at the Curragh conducted by the Curragh Racecourse for Horse Racing Ireland.

The Irish Derby is run over a mile and a half. It was first run in 1866 and was won by Selim.
Many three year olds run in the Derby at Epsom then run a month later in the Irish version at the Curragh.

Tips for the Irish Derby. RACE.1.

Who is the favourite?
As ever, the Epsom Derby is likely to have a significant bearing on the outcome at The Curragh and the obvious starting point is the runner-up, Westover (best price 7/4).
The way he finished off the race at the Surrey venue strongly suggested he would have been an even more potent force had he received a clear run and with the wide, open galloping nature of the Co Kildare track sure to play into his strengths, Ralph Beckett's inmate makes a good deal of sense down the front end of the market.
………………………………………………..
Where is the each-way value?
Having already showed up prominently against the likely favourite last time out, Cash (8/1) makes plenty of appeal as a strong each-way alternative. Universally excepted as being extremely unlucky at Sandown back in April, the way he hit the line and pedigree strongly points towards him been seen in an even better light over 1m4f.
………………………………………………….
And what about those at the biggest prices?

Of those looking to muscle their way into the picture at a bigger price, Hannibal Barca (best price 12/1) appeals as one who could easily take the step up in class in his stride as his performance when scoring over the same course on his seasonal bow was done so in a fast time.
Entered up for several races at Royal Ascot, the fact he swerved many tempting engagements to come here point towards connections believing he has what it takes for Group 1 level.

..........................................

Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby runner-by-runner guide

1 ANCHORAGE
Official rating: 100. Odds: 66/1

Opened his account at Thurles last term and has finished fifth in two Group events this term. Workmanlike effort when filling that place in the Queen’s Vase and this drop in trip is not sure to suit. One of the likely pace angles.
.....................................

2 BOUNDLESS OCEAN
Official rating: 103. Odds: 50/1

Well-beaten in the 2000 Guineas but shaped with promise when second in Listed company last time on first start over 12 furlongs. This clearly demands more.
...................................

3 BUCKAROO
Official rating: 110. Odds: 16/1
Impressed in the Tetrarch Stakes, but was only sixth in the Irish 2000 Guineas last time. He’s out of a Galileo mare but has arguably been outstayed on his two runs over 10 furlongs and this extra distance is not necessarily a positive.
..............................

4 CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD

Official rating: 110. Odds: 10/1
Creditable fifth in the Derby before landing the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. Ryan Moore reported he was ‘not at his best’ on that occasion and it would be a surprise if he were to turn out eight days later.
................................

5 DUKE DE DESSA
Official rating: 104. Odds: 33/1

Looked a hugely exciting prospect last term, but has struggled in three starts this season, latterly when fifth in the Irish 2000 Guineas. A strong-travelling son of Lope De Vega, his stamina could be tested to the limit. Trainer Dermot Weld is seeking a fifth win in the Classic.
...............................

6 FRENCH CLAIM
Official rating: 107. Odds: 25/1
Fascinating runner given the form of Paddy Twomey’s runners (57% strike-rate in last two weeks). Made a successful reappearance over 10 furlongs at Cork, but he got outstayed in the Derby Trial Stakes at Leopardstown. Another out a Galileo mare, he should stay and is one of the more interesting each-way players.
...............................

7 GLORY DAZE
Official rating: 104. Odds: 40/1
Plenty of promise when second to Stone Age at Leopardstown, but he plainly struggled to handle Epsom when 14th in the Derby. Boasts winning form at the Curragh, but more required.
..............................

8 HANNIBAL BARCA

Official rating: 111. Odds: 8/1

Looks a definite contender. He made a smooth start for Joseph O’Brien when winning the Gallinule, having been fourth in the Vertem Futurity Trophy for Brian Meehan last season. He’s related to Fledged, who has won over 12 and 14 furlongs, and shapes like a stayer for a trainer targeting his second win in the race.
...............................

9 LIONEL
Official rating: 102. Odds: 10/1
Another who demands a second look. Needed every yard of the 11-furlong trip when landing the Cocked Hat at Goodwood. And his dam Gretchen was a winner over 12 furlongs. Given his size and scope, he looks all about stamina. A galloping track like the Curragh should play to his strengths, but he would definitely prefer a bit more cut in the ground. Whatever the going, he seems sure to be staying on strongly at the business end.
..............................

10 MANU ET CORDE
Official rating: 101. Odds: 100/1

Well-beaten in two Group events this term and looks nothing more than a potential pacemaker.
............................

11 PIZ BADILE

Official rating: 109. Odds: 10/1

Another interesting contender. He looked all about stamina when landing the Ballysax but failed to figure in the Derby. Trainer Donnacha O’Brien has reported that “he was all over the place on the track” at Epsom. Stamina should not be an issue and he deserves plenty of respect back on this more conventional, galloping course.
..............................

12 STONE AGE
Official rating: 114. Odds: 7/1
Unbeaten in first two starts as a three-year-old, including when readily landing the Derby Trial. He got worked up in the build-up to the Derby, including sweating freely and arguably did not finish off strongly when sixth despite travelling powerfully into contention. He clearly is a major player on the pick of his form this season.
............................

13 TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS
Official rating: 96. Odds: 50/1

Appeals among those at fancy odds. Looked all about stamina when landing a handicap at Chester in May, staying on relentlessly to score. He clearly looks like Ballydoyle’s pace angle and he could run into a place if getting some of his rivals in trouble.
...........................

4 VEGA MAGNIFICO
Official rating 94. Odds: 33/1

Stayed on strongly to land a maiden at Navan and should stay given his pedigree. However, this is another step up and he looks best watched.
...........................

15 WESTOVER
Official rating 116. Odds: 7/4
Narrow winner of the Sandown Classic Trial and caught most eyes when third in the Derby after finding trouble. Once finally finding an out at the furlong pole, he thundered home to finish two and three-quarter lengths behind Desert Crown. Must go well here, particularly with Colin Keane now in the plate. Quick ground is not a problem, nor is stamina given the way he stayed on. It’s difficult to find chinks in his armour.
............................

16 TUESDAY
Official rating: 117. Odds: 6/4
Bids to become the third horse to win the Oaks and Irish Derby after Salsabil in 1990 and Balanchine in 1994. She looks the pick of Aidan O’Brien’s squad as he chases a 15th win in the race. A short-head winner over Emily Upjohn at Epsom, Ryan Moore was adamant that there was more left in the tank at the line which should quell any stamina concerns. By Galileo and out Of Lillie Langtry, she was second in the Irish 1000 Guineas so the track is no concern and with the fillies’ allowance she warrants serious consideration.

RACE.1.

VERDICT

One that could well step up here though is HANNIBAL BARCA, who looked as though the 1m4f would suit when he won the Gallinule Stakes

COMMENTS
Boundless Ocean ...Likely to get his turn at Listed or Group level in due course but up against it here
French Claim... Has a small chance if the forecast rain arrives early but others look far more likely
Glory Daze... 1m4f should suit him and likely to be better suited by this track; could outrun his odds
Hannibal Barca... Should come on plenty for the Gallinule and a viable alternative to the two market leaders
Lionel... Has to step up again and considerably so but very progressive and an interesting runner
Piz Badile... Another likely to be better suited by this track and cannot be left out of calculations
Tuesday ...Oaks winner is the top-rated in the race and adds much intrigue; significant claims here
Westover... Most unlucky-in-running third in the Cazoo Derby; deserving of his place in the betting

Yes top tipster this week in Race.1. Lucy, Well Done 8)

if you had done 5 ew lucy and it won you get a profit of 8.59
if it had came just placed you would have lost 3.28.

So a straight 10.00 win earns you a profit of 13.75.

Comments
All White moves up 2 places after her 9/1 winner.
Frosty & Wolfie both pick a 40/1 3rd with Frosty having more confidence to put a fiver on EW, and gets back his big lead in the table.

But things can all change at Sandown next week.

Table after Week 9.

Frosty....... .364.37
Wolfie........319.18
Kerryblue....212.50
Lucy............78.75
All White.....]67.32
