Re: World Cup 2022?!
I think its generally accepted most teams have a designated penalty taker and if they are on the pitch they take it, the way he drilled home the first one was pretty emphatic in terribly pressurised circumstances so he was deffo the right man for the job, sadly even the best miss occasionally, I really felt for him

Re: World Cup 2022?!
I agree completely. I don't think he was being greedy, I think he was taking responsibility. If he'd have stepped aside and someone else had missed, he'd have been criticised. I have less sympathy for those who try to be clever with stuttering run ups etc, but he went for power (possibly too much so), which to my mind is the right approach.Bluemike wrote: ↑Sun Dec 11, 2022 12:51 pmI think its generally accepted most teams have a designated penalty taker and if they are on the pitch they take it, the way he drilled home the first one was pretty emphatic in terribly pressurised circumstances so he was deffo the right man for the job, sadly even the best miss occasionally, I really felt for him

Possibly? He hit the roof of the stadium instead of the roof of the net. Don't think "possibly" should be anywhere near your statement.Andym wrote: ↑Sun Dec 11, 2022 2:27 pmI agree completely. To be honest, no professional footballer should ever miss a penalty - but they do because they're human and affected by pressure.
I find it much more concerning that we failed to score from open play.

Re: World Cup 2022?!
Thank f*ck for that other night, some of us can now view the remaining competition in peace. To be World Champions you got to earn it, a win over Iran, a Wales team that gave up on the competition before it were even underway and some part-timers from Africa doesn't spell out a nation worthy of winning the damn thing. The United States could, or should, have picked up a win also. Farce would have continued against Morocco in the next round but guess we've been spared that particular indignity.
Trouble with the English being whenever they come up against a solid opposition they invariably fold, or, they can't handle the bigger occasion. This was illustrated last year with Italy, hell they were given a home advantage for just about every game they played in. The media, tabloids etc whip themselves into a frenzy and all this where before start of competition these individuals were something indifferent to team progress. It's unfortunate, but in no way surprising.
For the record Southgate has proven a real good team coach, made a name for himself and restored certain pride to a nation but guess make a decision now about just how far he can take a team. Maybe realize he's done all he can and step aside for someone else.
One last time can now kind of enjoy what remains of the tournament. If a Croatia / Morocco Final comes to pass it'll be something of a non-event but the way games have played out thus far, not outside the realms of feasibility.

I still get mild irritation thinking about Bale fresh air diving @ Hampden 4 years ago.

Well lets hope Morocco win the tournament, only ones who really deserve it, in my eyes anyway.

Re: World Cup 2022?!
That could potentially be properly farcical. Greece, as 2004 Euro Champs until 2008 won close to feck all other games, as Champions.
Got to think Morocco would be fairly poor World Champions.

Re: World Cup 2022?!
I think France beat Morocco soundly 2-0 at least. Argentina beats the old legs of Croatia. Keep an eye on the Refs & VAR, they’ll favor Morocco out of fear of getting their hands lopped off.

Re: World Cup 2022?!
For a country with a population not much bigger than Wales Croatia really does punch way above its weight and are good on the eye too. I’d be more than happy to see them make the final.

Re: World Cup 2022?!
It would be very good for a nation like Croatia to do a Holland 74/78 and make consecutive finals……… but (opinion) ——>> Argentina v France final will be a more fitting end to an average World Cup.
Messi lifting the gold would be the cherry on top.
Somewhat strong opinion which is largely disagreed with across a few forums. I personally dont get the Messi-hate amongst some people (NOT on here, keep wigs on) …., but if Maradona himself is quoted as saying Lionel is best who’s ever lived, (& Ronaldinho said similar)….. got to hope and that the best ever lifts the most important trophy before his career ends, regardless of nationality.

I do not hold grudges but I hope Croatia beat the Kings of the corned beef world.
The fact they started the 82' Falklands war and their cheating in 86' denied us does not even come into it, honest lol.

Re: World Cup 2022?!
Can't believe some still hold resentment after so many years, fucks sake let it go. What's done is done.
Kind of looking forward to later, got things planned out to certain extent. Thermal swimming (indoor naturally) at theme venue, water sports, good participation and ample time, folllowing that the game itself and expecting to make it through.
Croatia are no pushovers, made the Final last time out and did very well in '98, for players like Modric it's their last chance but same applies to Messi.
If the team are going to be Champions again for first time in 35 + years, the real work starts tonight. First competition since Diego's untimely demise, they'll want to win it outright to provide the right honor the name deserves. If Morocco were to win tomorrow, would be one crazy scenario.
Best way here, I think we'll just let everything fall as it may (and) just enjoy the occasion. Vaya con Dios.

Re: World Cup 2022?!
Totally with you on this. Just got in to see Messi make a complete mug of a Croatian defender (who I feel has been one of the better defenders this tournament) to set up the 3rd goal.marko69 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 13, 2022 2:12 pm.

Re: World Cup 2022?!
Recall back in 2014 a Final loss to Germany. Bad times, mind and focus weren't really part of it but through it all, thought back then could be last time to experience one further appearance. This time got a new chance at life maybe and the opportunity presents itself once more to take the trophy. Could be, or is, the last time to witness something once again and don't give a f*ck if it's Moroccans or Frogs that stand in the way, all opposition is there to be beaten.
Thought Croatia at least tried today. They got a certain resilience that other teams lack which maybe explains why they reached the Final last time out or made it this far this time around. Unfortunately for them they met a side with a greater desire and will to win, there can be no real dispute over any result.
An opening start defeat to Saudi Arabia but courageous victories followed. The Mexico win was pivotal, possibly the most important thus far. Without it, another Final appearance would not have been possible.

Bad news is it appears it will probably be the frogs or Argies win the trophy.
Good news is one of them will end up crying on the telly.

What international team do you actually support? USA? SPAIN? or ARGENTINA? You remind me of the Italians during the 2nd World War when they were asked which side they were on? To which they replied...Who's winningarana peligrosa wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 3:57 amRecall back in 2014 a Final loss to Germany.
