1-0 and a soft penalty decision. Would not want this goal to decide the winner!

Re: World Cup 2022?!
2-0 now that was a class team goal from a player who has always really impressed me - Di Maria. Now that one would warrant the World Cup win.
Where are France though? Deschamps is obviously worried as he has made an early double substitution to try and revitalise his team.

Re: World Cup 2022?!
Very disappointing, even decided to prepare veg for tea tonight instead, the penalty spoiled it for me. France not turned up, now is it a bug or are the Argies that much better?
Now turned channels and watching Gavin and Stacey, I thought I wouldn't be bothered but obviously I am, rather watch something else than watch Argie scummers win.
At least the Saudi's turned them over lol.

Re: World Cup 2022?!
It’s been as good a World Cup as I can remember. The stadiums have been good, most of the football has been entertaining and even the group stages were mostly undecided until all 3 games had been played. The fans appear to have enjoyed it and the atmosphere great, a few shocks along the way, ending with two fabulous games on the final weekend. In fact I can’t ever remember a better World Cup Final and it isn’t over yet.AzzurroMark wrote: ↑Sun Dec 18, 2022 5:48 pmPersonally I have enjoyed what I have seen of this World cup.
Just a shame it was played in Qatar and overseen by FIFA.

This final has it all. Maybe hardly any surprise that Mbappe and Messi have both played a HUGE part.Charnwood wrote: ↑Sun Dec 18, 2022 5:58 pmIt’s been as good a World Cup as I can remember. Re: World Cup 2022?!
You will not have seen a more one-sided final for all of 80 minutes, but since then you couldn't take your eyes off the game!
For those who chose to boycott it, yes your reasons will have been just, but boy oh boy have you missed out on one of the most thrilling world cup finals EVER!

Who knows, neither now really deserve to lose after those 120+ minutes.

Messi taking the pee from the penalty spot. Not many would have the guts or bloody-mindedness to even attempt that!

Re: World Cup 2022?!
Overall, for that first 80 minutes of dominance Argentina deserve that. Credit to the French who looked dead and buried and managed to get back to level pegging twice.
Every newspaper back page worldwide will have that picture of Messi with that missing piece of his football jigsaw held aloft.

Re: World Cup 2022?!
We were so lucky to have two of the best players in the world on opposite sides, one playing in his fifth World Cup and nearing the end of his career and the other playing in only his second and second final too, both made a huge contribution to the game scoring 5 of the 6 goals.

CAMPEON DEL MUNDO, FINALMENTE UN VEZ MAS. UN ESPERA HA TERMINADO.
UN BUEN JUEGO PERO MUY NERVIOSA.
NUNCA PENSE QUE VIVIR PARA VER OTRO CAMPEONATO.
TENGO QUE MARCHARME, A VOLVER MAS TARDE.
CAMPEON DEL MUNDO, NO HAY NADA MAS QUE DECIR.

Re: World Cup 2022?!
Had he not been a cheating b*stard Maradona would have given him a good run for his money but given that unsavoury quality Messi stands out on his own. Lucky for me I had the privilege of watching one of his stunning performances in a Champions League 1st Leg Semi Final at the Nou Camp scoring 2 fantastic goals for Barcelona as they beat Liverpool 3-0. I will remember the game forever.

Yep, believe it or not, i’ve watched him single-handedly pump Hibernian 6-0 @ Murrayfield Stadium many years ago.Charnwood wrote: ↑Sun Dec 18, 2022 7:47 pmHad he not been a cheating b*stard Maradona would have given him a good run for his money but given that unsavoury quality Messi stands out on his own. A certain Chris Hogg was going to hang up his boots after the game due to being turned inside out and upside down for 46 minutes before Lionel went off @ HT. Couldn’t understand how a fellow “pro” could embarrass him so much.

Always great to see the best ever win their respective sports trophies……. Federer with the Wimbledon trophy, O’Sullivan in snooker…… Messi with the Gold.

Re: World Cup 2022?!
To put all events of the game into one post just isn't possible. Maybe aged extra years by the end, by the time it got to two goals each there were - in so many words - an element of panic and edginess. Thought the first and last penalties of regular play shouldn't have been given but MBappe's second was real sublime, fitting for the biggest game on the biggest stage.
No-one could have imagined such a score or tussle before start of play, Frogs looked real out of out it and sunk without trace with time running out but fought their way back, could just have won it right at the end of regular time but the same applies to the opposition. It were a game for the ages, some of us maybe, or won't, get to see enough tournament of Final, but if that were to be the last, it was a satisfactory ending - even if you had to go through hell in order to reach it.
Some say Messi is the best ever, but it's not general consensus opinion. Having watched Diego numerous times at domestic and international level, the latter can never really be surpassed. Maradona was, and is, the greatest of his nations soccer figures. Messi has done well, real well, is a name of great caliber and talent but for those of a certain age, can't quite measure up to the name of yesteryear. Both players were immense, deserved to lead their country to a World Championship winning team.
Don't like penalties in any capacity, it's a lousy way to settle a contest least of all a damn World Cup Final but it's been done three times now. France losers in 2006 also at the same stage, I wonder how many of their players were thinking back to then while waiting for any shoot-out to get underway.
Once again it's not possible to encapsulate all action from today but bottom line here is Argentine's become the World's Best for the first time in 36 long years. Defeats at the Final stage in 1990 and 2014 can be put aside right now, the right prevailed and arguably the best team in the competition has won it. If that was to be the last, then it's ended on the right note, there can be little in way of dispute.
