Not pointing any fingers in here but what a nation of complainers we are :-)

Qualified for stage II at the top of the group, survived a couple of potentially tricky opponents, have eased into the competition now, have blooded a couple of the promising youngsters (Mainoo & Palmer). For sure it wasn't pretty but I think we'll see quite different style now that our opponents won't park the bus and just hope for a point as has happened mostly up to now.

Imagine it will be Netherlands up next so let's see how this game goes before judging. If we make it to the Final again (and with most of the big names in the other half of the draw now this is not OOTQ) I don't think anyone will care about the qualifying games. It's what we used to admire so much about the Italy of old in world cups right? Effective and boring group games then flowering in the knockouts.

Let's see if we have it within us to flower too. Surely the jury has no right to make a verdict on that yet.

As for throwing litter at Southgate and the team, I don't have adequate words to describe my disgust. It's balmy weather here in Central Europe at the moment, so I just assume it's down to that and copious amounts of excellent German Kolsch. How short people's memories are and how quickly their expectations become entitlement.

People think Belgium are contenders. Not with this performance v Ukraine. That Belgium boss better "duck" heading off at the end. Might get the polystyrene cappuccino cup in the coupon.

Round of 16;

Switzerland v Italy
Germany v Denmark

England v Slovakia
Spain v Georgia

France v Belgium
Portugal v Slovenia

Romania v Netherlands
Austria v Turkey

I can’t believe the two teams seeded 1 & 2 meet in the Round of 16 as a consequence of neither France or Belgium winning their Group.
I wonder where the surprise is in this round, for me it will most likely be Romania winning against the Netherlands. Surely it can’t be Skovakia winning against England. ☹️

The path to the Euro 2024 final is clearer now the group stage has completed and England have landed in the more favourable side of the knockout draw, with Germany, France, Portugal, Spain and Belgium all on the other side of the last-16.

So what is the route to the final?

Round of 16
Slovakia

Quarter-Final
Reigning champions Italy or Switzerland

Semi-Final
Romania, Netherlands, Austria or Turkey

FINAL
It wouldn’t be until the final when England face one of the 'big hitters' from the opposing side of the draw.

What a shame we’re playing crap football, although to be fair to Southgate the job of qualifying is a job done. We also now have a gift draw in the Round of 16 which should provide a routine pass to the Quarter Finals where we’ll meet our stiffest opponents so far. If we could get past Italy or Switzerland the route to the Final would be wide open.

This is far from over and Southgate could easily move from zero to hero.

Route to the final “wide open” should you pass Italy or Swiss? Whit? You missed the Austria games? If it’s them, i’d say Austria to the final barring injuries to their best players. What a team they are.

And Slovakia are routine? 🤔 Hmmmm. Well, i do reckon the polystyrene cups will change to glass bottles if defeat happens……. But that’ll not be an easy fixture. The Slovaks will be well drilled and well up for that one.

I suspect it's going to be yet another low block opposition we have to try and break down.

How does any team break down an opponent whose soul intention is to just sit back? We know what it was like in League One at PR. A right bloody bore and frustrating as hell to watch.

Nope, because they'd be instantly relegated or knocked out...

Most of the fancy words and phrases are just descriptions for tactics that have been used for generations. If you went 1-0 against a stronger team in the 70s, you'd likely 'park the bus' like they do now.

Things do slightly go in and out of fashion, it's a little rock, paper, scissors with tactics and systems. Things do also evolve and improve over time, physically and tactically, almost all thanks to science.

We're seeing the rewards from a very analytical, strict and methodic way of playing at Ipswich, so it feels a bit odd when it's criticised in favour of 'just play football'. The reason England have struggled is because the technical part of their plan is inadequate and has not held up, not because they have a plan.

Yep, front foot, up top…… sorted.

As long as they know what foot is to be front. Cant have the front foot at the back , end up with a back foot , down the bottom incident. How will Rio cope with that?

With all due respect re technical stuff…….. hmmm, it is all sort of “OOT THE FKN WINDAE” when you come up against a team bursting a gut to do well, ie, Albania, Georgia last night. There are two teams on the park, and Scotland aside, two teams gunning for it.

Gamechanger owners @ HT on phone to Kieron when 2-0 to Brentford at PR: “WTF is going on?”

KMcK: “Well, its like this, they’ve not taken onboard the technical side……”

Gamechanger: “Kieron? Kieron? ‘Technically’ you’re on the dole @ 4:45pm plus time added if you dont sort it, boyo, ok!”

TBH Marko I’ve not watched a single game from start to finish as I’ve not been able to muster up any enthusiasm for this competition despite having been looking forward to it for a while.

I’m not sure I’ve suggested anywhere that Slovakia will be routine, or that beating Italy or Austria will be easy. The sentiment of my post was simply to make the point that by avoiding all the big hitters until the final of this competition, the England team have a better opportunity than they could ever have dreamt of to get to the Final.

Like it or not Slovakia with a smaller population than London is one of the weakest teams left in the competition despite their win against Belgium. Italy were utter crap against Ukraine a few nights back and hardly threatened the Ukraine goal for 90 mins in a game they had to get a point from, and if England reach the semi finals the toughest opponent they can meet is Austria or Netherlands.

Surely you can see that should be a much easier route than being in the other half of the draw against France, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands etc.

With the players Southgate has at his disposal If he could get them to function at just 80% of their potential England would have a gift of an opportunity to reach the final of this Competition.

As we all know, based on recent results and style of play adopted this is highly unlikely.

Round of 16;

Switzerland v Italy
Germany v Denmark

England v Slovakia
Spain v Georgia

France v Belgium
Portugal v Slovenia

Romania v Netherlands
Austria v Turkey
So this is the line up then.

Dazz67 v Marko69
JohnnyB v Charnwood

Blue Wilf v G&B
Mach Polish Blue v Jimmyt

Frosty v Bluemike
Tangfastic v Hallamblue

All White v Cabanas Blue
AzzurroMark v Lucy

So our Prediction league big hitters face each other in a 1st v 2nd knockout.

Discounting England's involvement, for me the biggest disappointment of the tournament so far must surely be Italy, it pains me to say!
Switzerland are playing with such panache, the Azzurri have no answers! It's now 2-0 to the Swiss and deservedly so. I've seen nothing of the Italians to suggest they are capable of coming back from this, they are very, very poor going forward!

Can someone tell me why it is now, that so many teams (at any level of the game ) seem to play this possession football around the front of the 18 yard area, but rarely cut to the byline down the side of the 18 yard area and look to cross the ball back, into the box?

You can rarely be caught offside for a cross being cut back into the box from the by line, yet no team seems to look to do it, instead, preferring to bulldozer the ball through a packed front edge of the18yard area.
