More disappointment from EON

A place to chat about anything thats not football related. Most of the threads in here are completely pointless which is why people keep coming back and back. As the forum title suggests, feel free to make any post you want on any subject you wish. It also has Adult jokes (so be warned) which is the other reason people keep coming back.

More disappointment from EON

Post by arana peligrosa » Sat Dec 13, 2014 3:10 am

Let's keep it short, but recently the new title of the next Bond movie was disclosed : Spectre

I've been a Bond enthusiast for many years, seen every theater release going back to the Roger Moore era, but don't like what they're doing with it now.

I try to keep away from gleaning as much information on the next project as possible but have (one way or another) ascertained that Blofeld is on to return, the SPECTRE organization will make a comeback and the film title will be Spectre. (SPECTRE was last encountered in the 1960s and Blofeld hasn't made an appearance since 1971 in the series)

This is all due to the re-boot decision that took place in 2006 with Casino Royale - to the uneducated, every other (20) Bond movie that came before was effectively made void and redundant with that same decision.

In so many words, it's f**king absurd but many fans and neutrals alike (particularly the latter !) have learned to live with it, but don't tell me it was a decision many thought was for the better.

The last release (Skyfall) was decent but hardly the best ever. I can only hope despite the (new) ill-advised throwbacks to the past, this new release, late next year, provides some better entertainment.

I like the "reboot" to be fair. Since they've made it grittier, along the lines of the Bourne series, it's sparked my interest again. Whilst an avid fan of Bond I got mildly irritated with how things were going. I mean come on, invisible cars? Seriously?

I'm back to being excited again and can't wait until next December. Not only to Spectre but also the new Star Wars and Hunger Games.

And that's another of the issues the series has taken on in recent years - a comparison to Bourne.

The two franchises are two seperate things, i don't know if the producers are just trying to copy each other, but it's just not working or really viable, and sooner or later (in fact we're past that stage) it harms the integrity of James Bond to the older audience who know (and appreciate) what Fleming's creation should really portray.

Craig in the last release almost resembled Superman with some absurd feats of endurance (Yes it is fiction) but those of a certain age won't always appreciate their favorite spy being shot off moving trains and surviving an Angel Falls type drop off a waterfall, and live to tell the tale. The poisoning from Casino Royale was well done and believable but sometimes you got to know where to draw a f**king line. James Bond is fiction Yes, but Fleming didn't intend immortal.

I often miss the old days with Connery, before CGI and audacious and asinine stuntwork came into play, although Dalton was my favorite of all the actors in the role. - The closest representation you'll get to what Fleming truly intended.

Craig is good, but let down with implausibe scenarios and never really had the look of Bond to begin with. He'll be 47 at time of next release and contracted to another entry after that, but I feel he's already done one too many.

Lastly, and as an American, there has been some substantial talk in recent years about the idea / rumor, of the producers wanting an American (actor) to one day play the part of Bond. I hope this never sees the light of day. - An American Bond, you got to be f**king kidding me. Commonsense over nationality.

I think there needs to be a compromise. I don't mind the reboot in that we now have a more serious Bond, but I do miss a little bit of satire. Craig has never been a favorite of mine, although I do think he's a brilliant actor. I agree, Dalton was perfect for the role and his tenure was too short lived. Invisible cars is over the top, but I also miss the old 'Q's gadgets and of course the cars. It will indeed be interesting to see who the next Bond may be. Can anyone say Benedict Cumberbatch?...probably not, he'll be too old by the time the Craig is done.

We had a serious Bond with Connery (up to a point), we had a serious Bond with Dalton, and as for the rest, too much emphasis on humor I'm afraid or dragging Flemings creation through ridicule and embarrassment at (too often) certain stages.

Yes Craig can be serious, but right off the bat he was the wrong choice. Wrong hair color, wrong eye color, and the physique was questionable. Ok he's done hitherto a fine job of it for the most part, but nobody tell me he is the best ever.

Craig got the part because someone picked up on his performance in Layer Cake. (I've seen the movie and didn't think it - or Craig - were anything special) but they put it together and he was the right candidate. We can't change what has already occured.

While we're stopping by here is a shortlist of personal favorites :

Bond - Tim Dalton
Film - From Russia With Love
Girl - Fiona Volpe
Villain - Francisco Scaramanga
Novel - Moonraker
Vehicle - Aston Martin DB5

Kiel died recently unfortunately. Another loss to the franchise, although his character (Jaws) was badly required for omission in Moonraker.

It seems you list The Spy Who Loved Me not only as a favorite title but with Bach, Kiel and the Lotus Esprit together. (Bach's Anya Amasova is one of my favorite Bond girls also. - Devoid of any tangible acting ability, but the looks more than componsate)

Yep the Spy Who Loved Me is certainly my favorite, Jude. I haven't seen all of the Dalton Bond movies...I need to revise that asap.

'All of them' would amount to two releases, but what a job he did in his short time as 007. Do yourself a favor, go out and grab a copy of The Living Daylights and License to Kill (or whichever you haven't yet viewed) as soon as able.

The latter is a disappointment and more Miami Vice than James Bond, but Dalton just about saves it with another superlative performance that Fleming would've applauded. See Craig in Quantum of Solace as a direct comparison. (If you've seen that particular entry)

Wales would have made for a decent setting for a Bond movie. You got some fine scenery especially in the south and around Swansea Bay. I've seen every release and can't remember Wales being used once for a 007 title.

Tim Dalton was Welsh incidentally, that not many will be aware of. Remains a personal favorite

I never saw that one coming...
The idea of a colored James Bond has been discussed to death on various associated forums and have participated on those said discussions, but it's easy for the most innocent talk to be viewed incorrectly and for the inevitable race card to come to the fore. In the simplest terms it's something that should never be approached and left well alone. It's like having a white Axel Foley or Shaft, you can't mess around with the integrity of a such a recognized franchise by changing the lead actor to such a degree. They (Eon) have made some ill-advised changes in recent years regards the Bond series, but this one would for sure alienate a significant number of long standing enthusiasts if this ever came to pass.

As for Craig right now, will go to theater in a few weeks for the new release as has been regular since the 1970s, but there's been a number of personal significant changes since 2012's Skyfall so will be approaching this latest entry with less enthusiasm and interest than before but still eager to see what they can put together.

Agreed, changing the character of bond to a black male just doesn't make sense. It was being discussed back when Brosnan was playing the role and Colin Salmon was touted as a possible replacement. The term Racism is thrown around to frequently nowadays. As you say, would Blade or Shaft ever be played by a white actor? Of course not. It's not about the colour of someone's skin, it's the history of the character.

Moving on from that and I'm still looking forward to Spectre. I can understand your hesitation Jude, but with the likes of christoph waltz coming on board, I can't help but think it's gonna be a great piece of work.

We shall see.

As soon as I got notice that they were bringing back Blofeld it was the beginning of the end. Here you got a character that while celebrated, has been dormant since 1971, and now they decide all these years on to bring him back. Of course it's all to do with that f**king reboot nonsense that saw Craig introduced in 2006 but it's going to look so out of place when it hits the big screen in a month or two that it's going to be regrettable to view. SPECTRE also are (or were) a relic of the past not seen since Connery, so guessing by the film title we're going to be seeing that back, when (I believe) it has no place in 21st Century Bond.

Don't get me wrong, some people are going to enjoy this, a large proportion of the popcorn and soda army will take their theater seats as per every 2 - 3 years and sit back and take in whatever comes at them, but for some genuine Bond enthusiasts it's going to be an ill-advised route and a release we would rather not maybe see, but as mentioned we will go along when the time comes and try to get value for our money. (I knew there was something amiss when former WWE superstar Batista was written in as one of the adversaries)

Have they actually said that Blofeld is back then? I must have missed that.

I'm still of the opinion that I like the series since the reboot and am thoroughly looking forward to this being released at the end of the month.

The theme song though, just no

Blofeld should be included, as he's the head of the organization ? Lo and behold it appears they've made this new release with his omission.. Read it as featuring Sherlock Holmes without Moriarty..

Say this once, going into this new title blind. Apart from some (very) basic knowledge am unprepared for what lies ahead on theater screens in a month or two and as for the theme intro, not even aware of who has supplied this years entry or what it resembles.

I can see why they chose Craig, took in a viewing of Layer Cake recently and while he has a certain quality the advancing years are (now) evident and Casino Royale apart, hasn't really appeared suitable for a role of such iconic status.

Easy to hold Craig responsible for the ill-advised reboot, but then it wasn't his decision. One important factor of it all was taking over from the lackluster and evidently inappropriate Pierce Brosnan. As again, EON have their share of questions to answer.

Sam Smith, who the f*ck is that. Not a name I even recognize. Fair enough if it's a disappointing effort (find out soon enough) but when we've been subjected to crap since the start of series with acts such as Madonna, Keys and White and Lulu then another instance was never far away. Can only hope the movie itself offers some redemption.

The first I will hear of the new theme is when I take the seat in theater at time of release. If it's as bad as some have suggested then I'll only need to hear it the once. As before, maybe the film itself will compensate for any sub-standard music.

Furthermore "worst theme in the history of 007" would be (very) close run thing between these two abominations. If the new theme can beat this garbage then maybe we won't even bother.

Die Another Day / Madonna / 2002

Quantum of Solace / Keys and White / 2008

I didn't mind the Quantum theme, but I'm a Jack White fan so probably biased. Die another Day by Madge was indeed poor.

Maybe Sam Smiths song will work alongside the opening viewing. But on its own on the radio, not good.

Shirley Bassey should've sung all Bond songs......, that should've been the rule!

The only Bassey track I liked (or could tolerate) was Moonraker. There is a (faster) disco version at the end credits of the same release but prefer the one directly after the pre-titles sequence.

The last decent Bond intro was Cornell in 2006 and before that you'd go back to say Garbage with The World is not Enough. I've seen it read that this new Smith effort resembles something off X-factor, and if that is the case, we'll make our excuses and leave and come back when the actual movie is underway.

Mind has been changed. Now heard it about 5 or 6 times......, it's not too bad. And it's a decent Bond theme. Pretty sure the opening credits will be worth seeing with it playing. Don't be late,...., but remember the nachos & Cheese you fat bstds.

It was featured on TWTD recently but didn't give it a viewing. Maybe with enough time to spare it will be allowed a run but it's likely the first time I get to witness will be in theater at time of release. Wasn't pleased Adele had the vote last time out as think she's a lousy "musician" but it was actually one of the better recent efforts. (Which isn't saying much)

Reading a Bond publication at this moment in time and supplies information even the most hardened enthusiast would be ignorant of. Too much information, but one example being : Bernard Lee (M from 62 - 79) would begin filming each day fortified by a bottle of gin or several large measures of scotch. Although at times unable to even stand, when the cameras rolled, would be word perfect and acted flawlessly. When a director said 'cut' he practically passed out.

It is rumored that when his house burned down, Lee was so intoxicated he did not even notice.
