Try this.
“I blew the lot on vodka and tonic, gambling and fags. Looking back, I think I overdid it on the tonic.”

Probably Rodney Marsh or one of those other degenerate asses. Wording doesn't sound like Best or Greaves, (we'll) go with the former.

Wrong, but you’re not too far off.

An attacking midfielder, I think.
SJ was not far off from the start. One of his names he said left the club and this player was his ‘replacement’.

Re: Who said that?
I know Greaves went in a part deal from Tottenham to West Ham but unable to recall the other player involved, believe it were Martin Peters.
Doesn't fit the excess lifestyle thing but don't possess a dossier on what he got up to in it's spare time. Probably incorrect but we'll get there eventually.

No.
SJ’s first sentence was nearly there with the maverick type and club.

Charlie Nicholas perhaps. Womanizer, favored some alcoholic intake, possible gambling involvements.
Doesn't seem to fit the suggested team or even timeline but remains a challenging round if nothing else.

No.
Played for England five times under 3 managers... Sir Alf, Joe Mercer and Don Revie.

His first name is that of Hilda Ogden’s husband.
For an American, SJ might struggle. So there was a famous Baseball player (supposedly) with the surname Musial in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. Every American loves baseball, right?

Re: Who said that?
I think if Stanley Mathews played for England under Revie he would have been 65. And he was a model professional, not this player.
Bit surprised you haven’t got this as he’s a well known seventies player.Someone’s already got the club right. SJ was pretty warm from the start.

Re: Who said that?
This is him, 9. He was also an actor as well as a footballer. Starred in that programme with Penelope Keith who’s even taller than the Gillingham goalkeeper.

Re: Who said that?
Obviously not the same one. Was a name actually considered for an answer but believed too obscure for inclusion. Starred in a QPR team that came very near a top level Championship in the 1970's if correct, even closer than ourselves in '81. In retrospect should have gone with instinct but at least the damn thing's been resolved.
