Pre-Match Thoughts - Mike

And Still The Wait Goes On.......

That elusive cup win still evades our grasp as it finished honours even against Lincoln City in the First round of the FA Cup last Saturday, as is often the case with Town these days it was most definitely yet another case of a "game of Two Halves", the first 45 really was bad from us, no cohesion or shape to us at all, little by way of creativity from the Midfield, Downes apart we looked lost, passing that would not be accepted in an U15's Sunday morning game littered our performance, gaping holes in a makeshift defence which time and time again were so nearly exploited and to be fair to Lincoln the 1-0 lead they went in with at the break was no more than they deserved, in fact it could have been far worse.

Thankfully it did improve somewhat after the interval, Lambert says they tweaked One or Two things which weren't working, god knows what they were but it worked, for me it was more a case of Players giving a damn and finally doing the basics right, pass to a teammate, move into space, make those runs, stop hoofing it aimlessly, challenge for loose balls, etc etc, not much to ask but all things we didn't do in the first half. While once again it wasn't vintage it was far better and we started taking the game to them and got ourselves on top, chances finally came our way with One or Two balls flashed across the Lincoln box which somehow saw Town fail to get the slightest touch to them which would certainly have seen us score.

I think it is fair to say the game turned in a couple of minutes, firstly Toto concedes another needless penalty and it looks to be game over, thankfully it's Will Norris in the Town goal to the rescue (I've always rated him !!!!!!!) as he beats the shot away and somehow Walker misses the rebound which looked impossible to miss, we go right up the other end and the Invisible man Andre Dozzell finds a bit of quality to arch his shot into the far corner of the Lincoln goal to get us level, there was some good work in the build up from Myles Kenlock too which should not go unnoticed as his run and lay off set's it up.

While Lincoln still looked dangerous against our fragile defence we did look the more likely in the dying minutes and efforts from Downes & Kenlock nearly won it for us, that said the Imps will feel they too should have won it at the death as one effort came oh so close to breaking Town hearts, thankfully it was just wide. All in all a draw was a right result in the end but when you make Ten outfield changes to the team how can you possibly expect any kind of continuity ? I suppose credit should be given to the players for finding their feet in their end, it must be like playing with a group of strangers but this is what we need to accept is going to be the Lambert way and it is not going to change but seeing that we are top of the pile having used the rotation system who can argue, but Ten changes Paul ? For me that's just a a bit too much, the upshot of it is that we have the very thing we did not want, a replay in Midweek up at Sincil Bank, the scene of some happy memories for me and every other Town fan and the fear is with the line up we are likely to opt for it could well happen again, who wants to go to Wembley Twice in One season anyhow.

More Cup Action........

We wrap up the First round group stages of the EFL Trophy with a trip to Colchester Utd, having already beaten Spurs U21s and Gillingham at home, qualification to round Two is already assured but topping the group ensures a home tie against a Southern Group runner up as the next stage is once again regionalised, with Colchester still looking over their shoulders at Spurs the game does have some significance as they need to win to guarantee progression themselves and while Paul Lambert is bound to play shall we say an "experimental side" I think he will also want a home tie in the next round to avoid any more midweek travel.

The competition while low down on everyone's list in terms of importance does give PL a chance to keep some of the fringe players up to speed, the likes of Jordan Roberts and Armando Dobra have benefitted from game time in this regard, not to mention players coming back from long term injury like Huws & Keane so it does have it's plus points, with some players still away on International duty it could be we actually see a slightly stronger side put out for this one than would normally be the case. Whatever the outcome Town will be in the hat for the next round so as such it's a bit of a free rubber and with a large Town following making the trip once more I think we may just edge this one irrespective of the starting line up. Town win for me.

The Opposition – Colchester United

Until 1937, Colchester Town were Colchester's main club and were the original tenants of Layer Road. Colchester Town joined the Eastern Counties League in 1935, but their poor performances in the league convinced supporters that the club should turn professional, much like nearby Ipswich Town. With club officials against the idea of turning professional, a new professional club was formed in March 1937, Colchester United, which would also play at Layer Road. United joined the Southern Football League as crowds for Town matches dwindled. In December 1937, Colchester United formed a reserve team, signing many of Town's players. As a result of this and Town struggling with £300 debts, Colchester Town folded the same month.

The club won the Southern League Cup in their first season of existence, and were Southern League champions in 1939 prior to the Second World War. Following the war, in 1947–48, the U's produced one of the most notable FA Cup runs by a non-league side, defeating fellow non-leaguers Banbury Spencer in the first round, before beating Football League clubs Wrexham, Huddersfield Town and Bradford Park Avenue. They finally fell to Blackpool in the fifth round. This set them in good stead for potential election to the Football League.

Colchester United were elected to the Football League in 1950 on the back of their second Southern League Cup win and ending the 1949–50 season second to Merthyr Tydfil on goal average alone. They spent eleven years in the Third Division South and Third Division following the league's reorganisation, with a best finish of third place in 1957, just one point behind rivals Ipswich Town and Torquay United.

The club suffered their first relegation in 1961 as they finished 23rd in the Third Division, but didn't have to wait long until their first Football League promotion, spending just one season in the Fourth Division as they ended the season second to Millwall by just one point. This trend continued over the next two decades as they were relegated to the Fourth Division in 1965 and promoted to the Third Division in 1966, then relegated in 1968 and promoted in 1974, relegated in 1976 and promoted in 1977 before a final relegation to the Fourth Division in 1981.

During this time, the club embarked on one of the most notable runs in FA Cup history, as manager d*ck Graham took his ageing side to the 1970–71 quarter-finals, dispatching non-league Ringmer, Cambridge United, Barnet and Rochdale following a replay. With the draw having been made prior to the replay against Rochdale, the U's knew they would face a home tie with First Division Leeds United, and duly trounced Dale 5–0. In the match with Leeds, the U's raced to an unprecedented 3–0 lead in front of a 16,000 Layer Road crowd, with two goals from Ray Crawford and one from Dave Simmons. Leeds did grab two goals back but Colchester held on for a famous 3–2 victory.

The club faced Everton in the quarter-finals but succumbed to a 5–0 defeat in front of 53,028 at Goodison Park.

Financial difficulties and a number of changes at board level in the mid-1980s caused a slide towards the lower end of the Fourth Division table and crowd numbers to dwindle.

Despite a brief turn around in form under former Rangers manager Jock Wallace, United were relegated from the Football League for the first time since their election.

Despite their relegation, the U's remained a full-time club while playing in the Football Conference, as they sold their Layer Road ground to the Colchester Borough Council to clear the club's debts. The club finished the season as runners-up to Barnet during their first season outside of the Football League, but, under the stewardship of player-manager Roy McDonough, the U's won the league the following season on goal difference over bitter rivals Wycombe Wanderers. In addition to earning a swift return to League football, the club also won the FA Trophy in 1992.

The club had a successful 1995–96 season as they reached the 1995–96 Football League play-offs, but were defeated by Plymouth Argyle at the semi-final stage. The club narrowly missed the play-offs in 1996–97 but did however reach the Football League Trophy Final held at Wembley. The U's drew 0–0 with Carlisle United but were defeated 4–3 on penalties. The following season however, Colchester were promoted via the Third Division play-off Final with a 1–0 Wembley win against Torquay United.

Colchester consolidated their position in the third tier of English football for a number of seasons, before achieving their then-highest league finish of second place only to Essex rivals Southend United in the 2005–06 season. Under Phil Parkinson's stewardship, the U's were promoted to the second tier for the first time in their history. However, when Parkinson left to take the reins at Hull City, his assistant Geraint Williams was handed the daunting task of guiding Colchester into their first season in the Championship. He led the side to a 10th position finish, above East Anglian rivals Ipswich Town, Norwich City and Essex rivals Southend United, while gaining the Pride of Anglia title in the process for the first time in their history. The momentum however did not continue into their second season in the Championship, as they finished bottom of the league and were relegated back to League One.

During the club's second season in the Championship, Layer Road hosted its final game on 26 April 2008 as the U's fell to a 1–0 defeat to Stoke City. The club then moved to their new ground, the Colchester Community Stadium, in the summer of 2008 in preparation for life back in the third tier. Despite hoping to make an immediate return to the Championship, the club made a dreadful start to the 2008–09 campaign, which saw manager Geraint Williams lose his job, leaving the club second from bottom. He was replaced by former Wycombe Wanderers manager Paul Lambert as he guided the club to a mid-table finish.

The 2009–10 season kicked off with a bang as Colchester United thrashed recently relegated Norwich City 7–1 on the opening day of the season at Carrow Road. Manager Lambert then defected to Norwich when their manager Bryan Gunn was sacked following a poor start to the season. This ensured a fiery return fixture, held at the Community Stadium in January 2010. The game saw a record crowd of 10,064 watch as the U's fell to a 5–0 defeat, with Ian Henderson being sent off on his United debut against his former club. The season ended with Colchester finishing in 8th position. The club finished in 10th position for both the 2010–11 and 2011–12 seasons, before narrowly avoiding relegation to League Two in the 2012–13 season, defeating Carlisle United 2–0 on the final day of the season to ensure their safety. The club then finished the 2013–14 season in 16th position.

Colchester secured League One safety on the final day of the 2014–15 season when they beat promotion hopefuls Preston North End 1–0 on 3 May 2015. However, Colchester could not stave off relegation to League Two in the 2015–16 season as they finished the campaign in 23rd position, confining them to the fourth tier of English football for the first time in 18 years.

Last season Colchester missed a playoff place by just one point finishing 8th in League 2.

May as well comment as stopping by and submitted a vote for the away team win. Not all up on this particular endeavor but can see the team has made steady progress and making a name for itself as rounds continue. Short trip to a near opposition so no chance of travel fatigue or such. After this who knows where it could lead but as the post-game read mentions this is something that would be far from a priority from many fans viewpoint. We'll win maybe 3 - 2 unable to offer much more at time of visit.

Lambert is restricted to the side he picks to some extend due to the rules of the competition with EFL teams obliged to field four qualifying outfield players in their starting XI.

A qualifying outfield player is someone who started the club's previous match, someone in the top 10 players at the club in terms starting appearances in league and domestic cup competitions in the season up to that point, a player with 40 or more first-team appearances over their career or a player on loan from a Premier League or EFL side. If clubs transgress that rule they face a £5,000 fine.

Lambert may opt to start Tomas Holy in goal - the Czech having missed the last three games - with full-backs Janoi Donacien and Myles Kenlock likely to keep their places.

Toto Nsiala may well be given another game at the heart of the defence as he continues his return from injury alongside either James Wilson or Luke Woolfenden.

Corrie Ndaba, who might well have stood a chance of a senior debut, joined Hemel Hempstead Town on loan on Friday along with young left-back Bailey Clements.

In midfield, Andre Dozzell and Flynn Downes are both away on international duty with the England U20s so Lambert will have to make changes there.

Emyr Huws could start again, although Lambert may be loath to give the Welshman two games in such a short space of time, especially with there being an FA Cup replay at Lincoln a week on Wednesday.

He could opt to bring in one of his senior men, such as Jon Nolan, while he may well be tempted to give a youngster a start, perhaps McGavin or Hughes.

Out wide, Anthony Georgiou could start as he did on Saturday, while Gwion Edwards or Danny Rowe might also be in the XI with Armando Dobra unavailable as he is away with the Albanian U19s squad.

Lambert might look to start Idris El Mizouni off his main central striker and who that might be is another question. Will Keane might not be given another start so soon after playing the full 90 on Saturday as he continues his comeback.

With Jordan Roberts out with a toe injury, Ben Folami away with Australia’s U23s and Ben Morris still on the way back from his cruciate knee ligament tear, Lambert may well be forced to start one of his first-choice front two, either James Norwood or Kayden Jackson.

Simpson could well be involved at some stage from the bench, while forward Kai Brown may also be included in the matchday 18 or at least the travelling squad.

If PL starts either Jackson or Norwood in this nothing game it will finally confirm the bloke has lost the plot.

My point being, surely any sane person would of played Jackson or Norwood against Lincoln and kept Keane back for Colchester?

Those EFL rules should be easy to comply to. Even Dobra could be one of the 4 qualifying players as he’s started the previous game. And most of our squad has over 40 league appearances. Could field mostly under 23 players if we want.

As Derrick mentioned, it’s the strikers who might be the problem area. We’ve only got 2 fit senior strikers. Keane’s a problem as he’s not match-fit and you also feel he’s a long-term injury waiting to happen at any point. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Big Tyreece line up at the start, with Jackson or Norwood coming of the bench.
Not really expecting a decent result or performance as this game’s just a dead-rubber and we obviously don’t really care about Cup games. Hopefully, we get a result, but I can see this being a loss in a “who gives a f*ck” kind of way.

Unfortunately I fear a defeat this evening, I would like a strong team out, and to put this game early to bed. We rarely play two good halves, so it's important that we keep it tight at the back.
2-1 I fear

Post-game 'response' would demonstrate any apathy towards this endeavor. Read game report on TWTD, bottom line something of a non-event with little interest or determination shown. Highlight being the goal they scored from distance, anything else would seem surplus for consideration.

We made up over half the attendance which was kind of pleasing although even then it were a small crowd overall, guess that could be expected for the nature of what was to be had. Hadn't we already qualified for the next rounds irrespective of win lose or draw today (?) Not overly concerned about today's loss in all truth, a poor game by all reports highlighted by one stand out strike that separated two largely ineffective club sides.

To some it up, we had most of the possession we had loads of corners we passed it about then lumped to a lone striker 6 inches smaller than there centre halves, we did not create anything where there goalie has had to make a save. Then they score from a guy wanting to win the ball more from 40 yards out that goes "OVER" Holy. So when the draw is done saturday we wili i predict end up with a away game at EXETER ffs.

Pluses, Young Folami, El Mizouni and especially McGavin looked good.

Isaac Newton must’ve had his equations wrong.

Over 40 yards out, and a shot with enough gravity attached to it to dip over a 2.06m (6ft 9”) keeper? Doesn’t make sense. Need to see it to understand.

Who put Holys feet in the soil like garden posts?

Being positive, it was good experience for McGavin and Folami. McGavin did things simply and very tidily and it was mentioned that he looks like a Cole Skuse-type of Player - I kind of agree. I thought Folami did pretty well on his own up front. Not easy being a lone target man, but showed some nice touches. Good that we didn’t have to call on Jackson or Norwood to fill the striker role.

I’m starting to think that there isn’t a future here for Toto. His passing was poor and looks clumsy as hell. 4th choice centre-back , for me, and I’d even prefer Skuse as a CB if we play 3-5-2. Yellow / red card or penalty waiting to happen. If we have a promising young CB coming through I’d be looking to offload him - but I’m not sure we have another Woolf as backup.

Holy must have seen that ‘shot’ late - well beaten in the end, but a GK of his height shouldn’t be beaten from 40 yards.

Interesting comments regarding Toto and to be honest the couple of times I've seen him recently had me thinking along similar lines which is a shame as he was top dog at this level with Shrewsbury but he definitely looks all over the place since his return from injury.

I wonder if that film is seen as racist in these delicate times.

Shot? that's being generous, it was no more than a robust challenge.
Serious? What, was Holy on his phone at the time? Need to see this.

Interesting comments regarding Toto and to be honest the couple of times I've seen him recently had me thinking along similar lines which is a shame as he was top dog at this level with Shrewsbury but he definitely looks all over the place since his return from injury.
Mike
He was really poor last night. It seems like he is an accident waiting to happen whenever he has the ball now.
Imo would certainly be worried if we had to rely on him stepping up for league games.

Deleted my post as it clearly offended someone, wasn't meant in a derogatory or racist way but accept it could be deemed as such.
