I don’t wanna sound insensitive, but in my opinion the French solution is not acceptable. Fair enough, if it isn’t safe to finish the 2019/2020 season then so be it...but to proclaim PSG champions and cancel the season is a typical, French socialist reaction to avoid making a difficult decision. Fine, cancel the outcome of the current season. Here’s an idea...restart the season next year with points and league positions in tact. Sure, the final points tally will be obscured...but at least you’d have a better representation of how things may have panned out. Who cares if the accumulative points and games played are different than a normal season. Sure it will mathematically be one and a half seasons...so what? At least the final league positions will be representative of competitive matches, and not political conclusions.
Totally agree there was absolutely no need for the Government to get involved at face value ( one would have thought that they'd have more pressing matters) . The financial and legal fallout of this has already begun with a host of clubs led by Lyon commencing legal proceedings for loss of revenue, potential loss of earnings , potential suits against themselves from advertisers , sponsors and tv companies - no champions league for them and the riches that go with it.

More likely was the fact it took the tanking of the economy and social misery off the headline news for a few nights, coupled with keeping the gilet jeunes off the streets just a little longer ( that's what Macron is really frightened of, large groups congregating, because they normally turn against him in a very public way - and that's what he does best , diverting attention )

Yeah Trump is a b*stard! As far as corona virus, I’m just baffled we can’t control it when by simply washing our hands we can kill it!

Personally i think wasting that many tests on footballers would be a disgrace when there are far more needy people out there who need the tests more.
I agree completely. I think there would be uproar.

I thought test kits were readily available on mass ? .. we see news pics here in Spain of British Covid-19 test centres sitting idle with nobody turning up to be tested. I thought in the UK the testing issue was more about logistics than a shortage of test kits.
I certainly wouldn’t advocate seeing footballers taking priority over say NHS workings but I don’t think that’s the case.
Blimey over here I’ve even heard talk of being tested before we’re allowed to play golf at a members golf club so test kits can’t be in that short supply.

I think they are readily available for key workers and over 65s who have symptoms. I'm not sure they are available for the general healthy population. As you say ibyhinn it's the processing capacity that is in short supply.

It looks like my info source was reliable, just read this on BBC Sport this morning.

Neutral venues will be the only way to complete the season, Premier League clubs were told during a video conference on Friday.

"Up to 10 stadiums" would be used to resume the 2019-20 campaign.

The Premier League would also need up to 40,000 tests for players and staff if plans to play the 92 outstanding games behind closed doors are pursued.

40,000 test's ? surely these resources would be better utilized on the public at large , not just an overpaid group of prima donna's ?

OK.... but who do you allocate those 40,000 tests to amongst the public? By a lottery?

Not disagreeing with the sentiment, but playing devils advocate - maybe these footballers can be seen as guinea pigs to see if we can get back to some normality and overcome the virus, even with human contact. If that is the case, then it could give the nation some confidence...or even a lift. Sort of modern day Vera Lynn’s. Or when the Ipswich players beat the huns in that football match during the Second World War.
Another thing - the tests aren’t a vaccine. It’s not as if they’re getting immunised in front of the rest of us- they’d be putting themselves more at risk if they agree to play. Can’t see it happening, but I’d give the players some credit if they played under these circumstances.

I'm not qualified to answer your ponts , i just offered rightly or wrongly a point of view.

Though i will agree with you on two points . Firstly the whole lockdown - confinement/imprisonment will haveto be addressed at some point - here in France it will kill more tban cov19 - thst"'s another thread

Secondly -i need a haircut too , i hacked the sideburns off last week - i started resemble Peter Ried circa 2000

Strangely enough, some ex- work colleague said I looked like a young peter Reid way back. That didn’t feel good. I preferred the Daniel Craig comparisons ... but plenty have said he’s a potato-head. :)

Aren’t the tests primarily for asymptomatic people and for statistical data about the disease? Of course NHS workers and sick people should be given priority for tests, but professional football players are part of the general public and should at least have access to testing as well. If that means 40,000 tests...then that’s 40,000 people you’ll know who are positive or not, right?

Like Tang says, how would those 40000 tests be distributed to the public otherwise? I’m not trying to over simplify this horrendous virus, but there’s really only so much we can do especially now. If there’s a way for sports to resume it would certainly uplift thousands of people and it would provide an outlet while we wait for a vaccine.

Back on topic, just give me some footie to watch even if it costs a few test kits which probably don’t work accurately anyway. This would at least lift the morale of thousands of footie fans like myself. This evening I’ve been out for one hour for the first time in 49 days, it feels bloody fantastic, if only I could have watched Arsenal v Liverpool this afternoon that would really have capped off a decent weekend.
Not too much longer to wait, I think ? Thankfully most Countries have now got a grip of this virus at least for the time being, my biggest fear is that it will come back again in second wave later in the year like nothing seen before.
In my opinion test kits are only a temporary need, what we really need is a vaccine and a treatment and both are still some way off.

To put the testing in perspective. .. I was invited to have a test due to age/health issues. None available via home delivery. None available via drive through in Ipswich. I could book one if I was prepared to make a 60-odd mile round trip to Thetford, where there were 5 appointments left for the week.

Test kits might or might not be available, but the opportunity to have a test is severely limited for the general population. To make them readily available to what are essentially a bunch of entertainers would be wholly inappropriate to my mind.

I’m in the same camp as you Andy, over age 65 with underlying health issues and if I was in the UK I’d be invited to have a test, but why would I want one if I’ve been in lockdown for 7 weeks and have no symptoms. With no need, like you I wouldn’t be bothered to drive 60 miles to Thetford, however if I really needed one I guess I would, I’m sure many people travel 30 miles ew every time they have a routine hospital appointment. The only reason I could give for wanting a test right now would be to confirm I don’t have it and haven’t had it, but isn’t that a waste of a test kit ?
With 12m of the UK population age 65+, the chances of one of the Premier Leagues 40k pieces of kit shortening your wait time for a test in Ipswich is pretty optimistic. I think the Premier League would also resource their own supply of test kits which would have zero impact on the NHS or general public.
Personally I think any step back to normality would be good for morale and uplifting for many.

Entertainers? I thought you are a season ticket holder - what games have you been watching!!! Mick MCCarthy would be apoplectic with rage if his team were described as a bunch of entertainers.

Seriously, I can’t get hung up about footballers getting these tests. Yes, I’m sure they’re far more deserving people around, but whoever gets the test, some people will still moan. Footballers have won the lottery already just by being footballers, so I can’t get any further upset if they get them. At least they’re prepared to put themselves at more risk by agreeing to playing. It’s like these tests are the difference between life and death - they’re just tests.
I mean if they’re so important, Andy might have driven those 60 miles to get one. Although who wants to drive to Thetford.

I would indeed have driven if I thought that it was necessary. The point i was trying to make was that, contrary to some if the comments on here, getting a test isn't easy even if you are suspected of having the virus as I was.

Hi all, hope you’re all doing as ok as possible in these mad times.

My opinion is just draw a line under the season. Liverpool, Leeds, Cov are champs etc. It might not be fair but this is force majeure and nothing’s fair.

Start it all up again when it’s safe.

Over and out. Stay safe

I can’t see the season being completed. See Sergio Argueros comments about players feeling unsafe. PL players are so powerful and they cant be forced to work.

As for starting it all up again when its safe - when will that be?

I can see essential workers or workers on the breadline being the ones who are the ones who are forced to be the guinea pigs and deem it safe enough for a full return to work. PL players are in a position where they can afford to wait this one out.

Also: Where are all these players? I would have though plenty of them would have returned home to be with family in these times and now are not able to return. And the rules about when they might be able to return are going to be quite widely different between countries.

I suppose it poses the question “ why were they able to return home to another country anyway”? Surely, going back to another country offered a risk at the time. I would have thought wives and kids would be in the UK anyway when the lockdown started.

It will be safe when the players can be swab tested shortly before each game and fans either swab tested or carrying immunity passports. Or the country will have reduced the threat to practically nil (like NZ or even Vietnam) or there’s a vaccine.

I think you’re right about essential workers going back first but footballers, despite a lot of them being spoilt brats, do love playing football. And if they don’t fancy it, they’ll be others that do
