Town likely to offload a fair number of players?

Post by hallamblue » Wed Jul 01, 2020 10:21 am

This seems almost inevitable given the EFL’s pursuit of the much needed salary cap (£2.5m) , but they also want squad sizes reduced to just 20 .

I can see a lot of clubs looking to offload any player out of contract. But it could be a huge problem for them . Clubs may be forced to keep players still in contract because they can’t afford to pay them off, and may therefore be forced to release those out of contract and younger players due to financial and squad size restraints .

With a squad size numbering 40 players last season and a wage bill of £5m+ Town must be right at the top of this “unwanted league” of large spenders and squad size .

You almost feel compelled to ask , why should footballers be exempt from statutory redundancy terms , when they’re extortionate salaries are the primary reason Clubs are facing bankruptcy?!

It’s going to be interesting to see how Clubs tackle these incoming restraints imposed by the EFL .....

Thoughts guys ?

Well the first thing is that none of the rumoured changes are actually officially adopted yet. Secondly, if/once they are then surely they won't be implementable this coming season as most existing contracts will be in force for some years to come. I imagine they might look to implement a cap from the 2022/23 season so that clubs can adjust as contracts end and are renewed.

Perhaps more important is how clubs adjust their budgets based on the massive reductions in income for this season and probably next. Given the point above and the fact that not many small clubs have rich benefactors like ME, I would suggest that we may have something of an advantage over other clubs because of the fall out from the pandemic. Although as we saw this season advantages on paper do not always convert into success......

Great news about Wolfie. Kind of expect Downes to leave - but maybe it’s best to cash in now when he’s hot property, as long as there’s re-investment. ( big IF).

Anyway, back to offloading players as per thread title. It’s been said before, but I think we’ll have trouble offloading a lot of players. We’re probably one of the biggest payers in this division and I can’t see a lot of our underperforming senior players ready to take a pay drop by going to lesser clubs. For example, we paid 2 million for both Nolan and Nsiala and we’ll never recoup those fees, but I can see us having to pay off their contracts just to offload them. Wouldn’t be surprised to see us trying to loan out these types of players if we can’t get rid.

I wonder if that’s why Lambert never cut the size of the squad last season ? I was amazed he’d made no apparent attempt to get rid of some players . I do t know what the contract situation is out the reported 40 strong squad, not do I know the age spread of these players .

DB: good point about the implementation period for the proposed changes . Like you say , it’ll be almost impossible for Clubs to offload players who are on contracts. These proposals work more in favour gif the smaller clubs in these divisions. Clubs like ours and Sunderland will now be under far more pressure to effectively “ downsize “ to make it a level playing field financially . Oh how this needs to be done at PL and Championship levels ( where the real problem lies )

I made the point several times that if you need to trim.the squad, your only options are not to renew contracts and get rid of contracted players who are wanted elsewhere. So you are left with contracted players no one else wants. Sad but true.
