Who will be promotion/play-off candidates in the English Football League One 2020/21?
The play-offs saw low scoring Wycombe head up to the Championship, likely as a surprise to a lot of people, and there could be more surprises to come in the upcoming season. Below I’ll review a few of the teams I feel could make a real challenge to finish in the play-off spots.

Ipswich Town
I’m sure a lot of fans and pundits thought Ipswich would bounce back in their first season, but it wasn’t to be. Manager Paul Lambert has the backing of the board as he was recently awarded a 5 year contract. It puzzled me as to why he was awarded this, but I do like the decision the more I think of it. He’s clearly the man to take them back, and with that support behind you from the owner and the board, it can only work in the favour of the team. The team itself still has a lot of quality, and on paper it looks to be a strong side that should be challenging for at least the play-offs. With a mix of experience and youth, Lambert should take this side further than their disappointing mid table finish and they should at least reach the play-offs.

Let the discussion commence.

Would have Doncaster on better odds than that.

I think that write up is spot on, yes PL made some big muck ups but I still think there is nobody out there who is realistically available to us who would do a better job, I also know our squad is much better than what it dished up and so for that reason I too see us as play off candidates at worst.

I'm holding out to see what develops at Charlton & Wigan, and also Hull, I'm with you BM on Ipswich at least in the playoffs, surely but surely we cant F**K up like we did last season  I'm expecting a vast improvement on our performances this season, and if Lambert F***s up again i would expect Marcus to say sorry Paul your gone, we have some exciting young talent that's waiting to be played and prove they are worth selecting, its just making sure PL gets the right team sorted and bonding very quickly and sticks with it, no bloody tinkering like last year, and no cancelling games due to internationals, so its role on September and lets get started. :D

Agree with that and I believe that would be the case.

Might do us a bit of good being 7th favourites. Got the impression the team thought they were better than they were. A bit of a reality check wouldn’t do us no harm.

And if Lambert can find his best team and stick to it then we’ll have a chance.

I'm expecting us to make the play-offs next season, but no more than that unless we can get a big striker and limit the game times of Skuse and Chambers.

My tip for Top 2 is Gillingham - they have made some good acquisitions and remind me of Huddersfield a few seasons back.

I wouldn't like to predict until the transfer window shuts. If we were to lose Downes, Woolfenden and both of last season's strikers (I imagine one is well on the way out already) then we could really struggle.

Bearing in mind we were in relegation form for at least the second half of what was last season, something pretty big has to happen to make me think we are promotion contenders. Hopefully someone will set up a little poll on here to gauge opinion nearer the start of the season. I'll reserve judgement for now.

Aw sh*t. It’s happened.

Ipswich Town are in the same league as Crewe Alexandra.

On that knowledge alone, £100 @ 4.5/1 ITFC to win the title.

GTF out that league.

👍 I do remember Crewe being decent for a few years.

But......

When I became an Ipswich Town fan in 1978, from memory, almost every season, Crewe were finishing bottom of the 4th. Obviously pre football league relegation days.

Ipswich Town v Crewe Alexandra at Portman Road. That’s your Hibs v Alloa right there! 🤦‍♂️

I got the match program somewhere, it were an epic game. I think they had Ashton playing for them then and we gave them two own goals or something ?

Those odds presented mean little. I put Sunderland as promotion favorites a year or two back and the team finished in bottom place.. Who put forward that list anyway ? Sky Sports, Coral, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power, William Hill etc it doesn't specify.

They will each have their own placings and what they expect. I think having Town in say sixth or seventh position for an envisaged end placing suits the team and may ease pressure and expectation from the players.

Not expecting to finish top two although that (of course) is the desired ambition. Play-offs seem a suitable target but always skeptical about what happens then given the teams previous run in them.

No, in this case it was me myself who deleted it all, Deeko......, my own fault for making references to jail and then receiving "is this necessary" messages. It is only humour but being given the "mod" duty does mean a few things need questioned sometimes ----> especially if Im the one being brought into question. Honestly, the things that come into my head that i resist to post!
In this instance, not a Big Brother scenario, 9.

I’ve heard you have to relinquish your balls to be a mod...a bit like I had to do for my ex-wife! She still hasn’t gave them back.

Frosty: You’ll be required to relinquish your balls?
Applicant: Yes, no, yes
Frosty: Forever?
Applicant: Yes, no, no
Frosty: Right then...sign here.

I can’t hardly remember Marko’s reference to jail. Wasn’t it about he couldn’t remember Crewe being in the Championship because he was doing jail time at the time. Bit ironic that, as he might have met most of Crewe’s academy coaching staff behind bars.

I’m taking a wild guess that whoever complained doesn’t usually post themselves very often.Don’t think this forum can afford to have jokey posts deleted. There aren’t that many posts or posters at the moment.

Why not instead post about the club and contribute, instead of complaining.

My mind is doing overtime trying to work out who our moaner is, maybe I need to get on here more often.

Anyway back on subject it looks like we all pretty much agree that anything less than Play Offs would be a disaster.

When I look at the odds and see sides like Peterborough United and Oxford United at shorter odds than Town to win League 1, all I can think of is Sir Bobby and how he would be feeling. These really are sh*t times for our Football Club.

Let’s all hope and pray we can hang onto all our better players, get a couple of our young guns to make another step up, add a couple of decent players ( we may have at least one already ) to the squad and make a serious challenge for one of the Automatic places.

If Posh lose Ivan Toney I can see their odds widening a fair bit, I am struggling to see why Oxford are so fancied, yeah they had a decent season but having seen them first hand I am unsure they can repeat that feat.

I think Sunderland, Portsmouth, Town, Hull, Charlton and Fleetwood could make up the Top Six, pushed for a dark horse I'll go for Blackpool.

Weren't we favourites to go up last season? I think the odds mean F'all to be honest. I am confident though now that we've beaten Colchester 4-0.
