Pre Match Thoughts - Mike

A Winning Start.........

Town got their League One campaign off to a winning start on Sunday as Wigan Athletic were beaten by Two goals to Nil in what was in truth a bit of a stuttering performance from the Tractor boys in which they failed to hit the heights of the previous performance against Bristol Rovers but still managed to play some decent Football at times, One move in particular which saw Freddie Sears have his effort saved was right out of the top drawer with some tremendous passing in the build up. With all the talk before the game that Wigan are a team in crisis and there for the taking this had the potential to be a real banana skin of a game, not to mention the dreaded curse of the Sky TV cameras but by the final whistle town had done more than enough to secure the points.

Image

It certainly won't go down as a memorable game but there were some pleasing aspects to come from it, none more so than Teddy Bishop getting a rare goal and then coming close to a second as his effort was brilliantly tipped onto the post by the Wigan keeper, the link up play of our Midfield Three again shows so much promise with Dozzell looking the real quality performer on the pitch until tiring and Jon Nolan putting in a good shift and doing the spadework for the second goal, seeing our Midfielders getting into the box is something we have been craving for so long so it is pleasing to see. Another plus point was our makeshift defence keeping another clean sheet and Tomas Holy not having a single save to make, yes admittedly Wigan are weak up front but you can only defend what is put in front of you and Toto & Wilson equipped themselves ok at the heart of the defence.

Portman Road needs to be a fortress this time around and that was the perfect start, we will certainly come up against better sides but equally we can and will play much better ourselves, not to mention a few First teamers will be returning to make us stronger. One notable exception in the match day squad was that of Flynn Downes who it has to be said has fallen from Golden boy to a bit of an outcast in truth, personally I think we have seen the last of him in a Town shirt but should he somehow remain here after the transfer deadline closes he will have a real battle on his hands to force his way back into the starting Eleven, sadly for him he let things turn his head and while you can't blame him in some respects, he does only have himself to blame.

Back On The Wembley Trail.........

We all knew the games would be coming thick and fast and next up this Tuesday evening a Carabao Cup Second Round game against Premier league Fulham who visit Portman Road on the back of a 3-0 reverse in their opening game against Arsenal. Clearly on paper it is a tough game but we again don't know how seriously the Londoners and Scott Parker will take the game, hopefully they will send out a reserve Eleven and should Paul Lambert play a strong Eleven it may not be the forgone conclusion it may at first sight appear to be. This one really could go either way so it's a toss of a coin for me. OK let's do it, Town win and a place in the Third Round. COYB'S

The Opposition - Fulham

Fulham Football Club based in London was founded in 1879, they will be playing in the English Football League Championship for the first time in 13 seasons after their relegation from the ‘Top Flight’ last season. They were the oldest established football team from London playing in the Premier League.

The club has spent twenty-four seasons in English football's top division, the majority of that in two spells during the 1960s and 2000s.

Fulham have never won a major honour, although they have reached two major finals. In 1975, as a Second Division team, they contested the FA Cup final for the only time in their history, losing 2–0 to West Ham United. Fulham reached the 2010 Europa League final, which they contested with Atlético Madrid in Hamburg, losing 2–1 after extra time.

The club has been in the Football League playing in various divisions since 1907.

In modern times Egyptian businessman Mohamed Al-Fayed bought the freehold of the club for £6.25 million in summer 1997. Micky Adams was fired by Al-Fayed in the aftermath of a poor start. He installed a two-tier management "dream team" of Ray Wilkins as First Team Manager and Kevin Keegan as Chief Operating Office, pledging that the club would reach the Premier League within five years. After an argument over team selection, Wilkins left the club in May 1998 to hand over the full managerial duties to Keegan, who steered the club to promotion the next season, winning 101 points out of a possible 138, after spending £1.1 million to sign Paul Peschisolido from West Bromwich Albion who was top scorer and captained by Chris Coleman – then the most expensive footballer outside the top two divisions of the English league.

In 1999, Keegan left Fulham to become manager of the England team, and Paul Bracewell was put in charge. Bracewell was sacked in March 2000, as Fulham's promising early season form dwindled away to a mid-table finish. Frenchman Jean Tigana was put in charge and, having signed a number of young stars (including French striker Louis Saha), he guided Fulham to their third promotion in five seasons in the 2000–01 season, giving Fulham top flight status for the first time since 1968. Fulham once again amassed 101 points out of a possible 138 in their scintillating title run, which was crowned with an open-top bus parade down Fulham Palace Road.

They are the only team to have twice reached 100 points in a season.

For the next 7 seasons they mainly achieved lower mid table positions in the Premier League.

Roy Hodgson was named as the new manager of Fulham on 28 December 2007, and took up his contractual duties on 30 December
In the 2008–09 season, Fulham finished seventh, their highest-ever league placing, earning qualification for the inaugural UEFA Europa League, the second time that the club had entered a UEFA competition.

2009–10 was arguably the most successful season in the club's history. They were eliminated from the FA Cup in the quarter-finals for the second year running, and finished twelfth in the Premier League. In the inaugural UEFA Europa League, however, Fulham reached the final, meeting Spanish club Atlético Madrid at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg. In their first European cup final the Cottagers were beaten 2–1 in extra time, having drawn 1–1 after full-time. The achievement of taking Fulham so unexpectedly far, beating famous teams like Hamburg, Juventus, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Basel in the competition led to Roy Hodgson being voted the LMA Manager of the Year by the widest margin in the history of the award. The home match in the round of 16 was arguably Fulham's greatest result in the history of the club. Despite losing 3–1 in the first leg at Italian giants Juventus and falling behind minutes into the second leg at Craven Cottage, Fulham scored four goals with no reply from Juventus.

At the end of the season, Hodgson left Fulham to manage Liverpool.

On 29 July 2010, Mark Hughes was named the successor to Roy Hodgson, signing a two-year contract with the club. Hughes resigned as manager of Fulham on 2 June 2011, having spent fewer than eleven months at the club. The Whites had an encouraging finish in 8th position and qualified for the Europa League via Fairplay.

On 7 June 2011, Martin Jol signed a two-year contract with Fulham, becoming the successor of Hughes. Fulham's Premier League form in the 2011–12 season was mixed, with the continuing away-record hangover of previous seasons dragging on.

Clint Dempsey scored a club record 50 Premier League goals for Fulham between 2007 and 2012

In the 2012–13 season, Fulham ended a seven-match winless run by beating Swansea City 3–0 away at the Liberty Stadium on the final game of the season on 19 May 2013. Fulham finished the season in 12th place.

Shahid Khan took over as chairman in July 2013, but after a poor start to the 2013-14 season, having only amassed 10 points from 13 games, Martin Jol was sacked as manager on 1 December 2013, with Rene Meulensteen taking charge as Head Coach. Meulensteen was subsequently replaced by Felix Magath on 14 February 2014, but remained under contract with Fulham until four days later, when Fulham confirmed the sacking of him along with coaches Ray Wilkins and Alan Curbishley. They were eventually relegated after a 4-1 defeat to Stoke City on 3 May.

Magath lasted in the manager’s role until 18 September 2014, when he was dismissed due to poor early season results, and Kit Symons took over as Caretaker Manager until his appointment was made permanent on 29 October 2014.

Under Symons, the Cottagers finished last season with 52 points and in 17th place on the ladder.

Kit Symons was sacked as Fulham manager in November 2015. It took 49 days to find a replacement, the club using Peter Grant and Stuart Gray in the interim, before appointing Slaviša Jokanović on 27 December 2015. Fulham finished the 2015/16 season in 20th Place with 51 points.

The 2016–17 season saw huge improvements in both results and performances. Following a third squad overhaul in as many years, and despite an inconsistent start, the team saw a significant improvement from October onwards which propelled them up the table. Fulham secured a 6th-place finish after an impressive finish to the season and entered the play-offs, but they were undone by a controversial Yann Kermorgant penalty, which saw Reading triumph 2–1 on aggregate. Despite a poor start to the following season, the club went on a club-record 23 game unbeaten run in the league which led to a 3rd-place finish, narrowly missing out automatic promotion, and the team went on to win the EFL Championship play-off Final against Aston Villa to return to the Premier League on 26 May 2018.

Following a poor start to life back in the Premier League, Jokanović was sacked on 14 November 2018 and replaced with former Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri. Results ultimately did not improve under Ranieri and he left the club in February 2019 after just four months in charge. He was replaced by Scott Parker as caretaker manager who could not save the club from relegation on 3 April 2019. Parker was appointed as manager on a permanent basis on 10 May 2019. In a season that was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Parker led the club straight back to the Premier League on 4 August 2020, defeating London rivals Brentford 2–1 in the playoff final after a 4th place finish.

0-1 HT, I thought for 38 mins we did pretty well without creating much at all, we've been very well disciplined, closed them down and got the tackles in, our passing too has been pretty good, we just lack anything up front. Considering our back line they've done ok apart from a couple of slack moments, the goal was silly with Donacien losing Mitrovic's run. Again for Dozzell doing plenty of good stuff. Maybe Norwood on second half with give us a bit more up front

Better than expected I'm happy with that the league is what is important.

I don't know how to some up that performance. We had no possession no passing play 1 shot on target and Fulham did not have to do a great deal. Downes came on and we now have Tuesday night free. :?

Well I suppose he would be a tad “ rusty”, given he’s only played about 15 games in 4 years!

Same here, no goal threat but we did ok with a very makeshift side, we weren't thrashed as many thought we would be.

Replied above lol .... had a phone call so didn’t post it ! Sorry ....

Perfectly happy we’re out of the cup . It’s not a priority and this certainly wasn’t our strongest team . So move onto more important game on Sat 👍

It could be Fulham stopped trying after getting the one goal . Done enough . No threat from us . No need to kill ourselves here tonight . Job done .

Felt disappointed when got the result last night. Considered coming on to comment but declined to get involved. Don't think upset was the operative word but felt let down in truth. Expected us to win it maybe, it were a home game and let's face it we've beaten the best can offer at Portman Road, didn't think Fulham were that much of an obstacle despite being of EPL status.

It's that reaction when you are eliminated from a cup contest. All right the League Cup or whatever the damn thing is now is essentially garbage but it represented a chance to do something I felt after the Bristol score. Sheffield Wednesday in the next round would have been winnable and after that you're looking at the last 16 or thereabouts.

Without getting too far ahead I'd ask the team not to be involved in the FA Cup in January. Not to tarnish the integrity of the competition it's only we're not going to make little to no impact. Just that initial feeling of being put out at one of the earliest rounds and thinking what might have been. Last night, not going to simmer over it, realize it's probably for the greater good and the League (promotion) is indeed (should be) #1 focus.

Expecting us to beat Fulham is a little high on expectations, don't you think? Maybe not I suppose, we only lost 1-0. Funny, the only cup competition I care about is the FA Cup. I'd still prefer us to only focus on the league and promotion though.

That “ second string” Fulham side consisted of 11 internationals vs our virtual second string side consisting of Leagues 1&2 , and Academy players . Mis match if ever there was one .

A 0-1 loss ?!

I’d say that was a “result” as far as Town were concerned 👍. Which is probably why Lsmbert eras actually happy at HOW we played in terms of game plan , shape and keeping g at it even when things went wrong. Apply those principles to our league games and I think we’ll
Be there or thereabouts come The end of the season🤞
