Pre-Match Thoughts - Mike

Just Where Do We Go From Here ?........

Yet another game has come and gone but some things never change, a tepid and Toothless display with no firepower up front, a lack of creativity in a lacklustre Midfield and a Defence which as always never fails to produce at least One individual error that invariably leads to a goal for our opponents, Oh and lets not forget our usual sure fire failure to beat anyone in the Top half of the Third tier of English Football, there folks you have it, the sad state of affairs of our laughing stock of a Football club. We must surely be the only club in world Football who can lose a game when the opposition don't even manage a single effort on target, it could only happen to us.

Despite the fact there were clear signs in the opening Twenty Five minutes that we had improved on recent efforts the performance still left so much to be desired, a line up lacking any kind of strike force, a Midfield missing our Two new signings and a Defence that breeds no confidence whatsoever, and so it proved. The ok start soon descended into the usual run of the mill rubbish to which we have become accustomed to, virtually no chances created until the triple change on Seventy Five minutes while the visitors got stronger as we went into our shells, sadly Posh weren't good by any means but they still moved the ball around so much better than we did and looked far more likely going forward.

It was all a far cry from the build up to the game in the week, the players doing the usual talking about how we would be alright and the aim was to "put it right", what a joke that is, we hear it week after week after week and nothing ever changes. The assistant Manager giving it large too about how returning players were getting stronger and looking better, really ? if that is improvement we are stuffed. Then we get the creme de la creme, Paul Lambert coming out with one of his post match classics, "we were really good" and "He couldn't ask for anymore" !!!! Well if that is the case and that is where we set the benchmark now there is no future at this club for anything other scratching around in the lower echelons of English Football for evermore. Does he honestly think we are all that stupid ? It is garbage week after week.

The worrying thing is, where do we go from here, every Town fan and his Dog would probably sack Lambert now, all except for Marcus Evans that is but of course he isn't a fan and here in lies the problem, saved us he might have and keeping us afloat at the moment he clearly does but there comes a time when the price we pay for this gets too much and seeing my club die is too much of a price to pay because that is what is happening, I do not believe for one second that he feels the hurt we all feel on a Saturday evening following another p*ss poor showing, when he is long gone we will probably still be here picking up the pieces, or will we ? Are the diehards even getting to the stage where they are thinking "sod this, enough is enough " ? I know I am, I am currently paying £30 a Month for nothing and the time is fast approaching to renew again, that is a big decision for sure.

I genuinely hope we get stuffed against Sunderland and indeed Crewe Alexandra, that would be the best thing for our club in the long term, a couple more heavy defeats would surely see the back of the man who is fast etching his place at the helm of the worst Town managers.

Tuesday's game see's another of the so called better teams coming to Portman Road and that can mean only One thing, a probable defeat, even though we outplayed them at The Stadium of Light earlier in the season we still got beat which is an all too familiar story for us, with Five defeats in our last Six home games it is clear Portman Road holds no fears for anyone these days, if Swindon can win here and plunder Three goals then anyone can. We could sneak a draw, I hope we don't, it will just be prolonging the slow lingering death that we are faced with, the only thing that is certain that come Wednesday Morning Lambert will be spewing out his usual bile about how good we looked and how we missed so many good chances blah blah blah, while a quick glance at the league table will tell us we have fallen even further into the abyss following another negative result. I have no idea what the score will be, I can't even say I am overly bothered right now.

The Opposition – Sunderland

Founded 17 October 1879 as 'Sunderland and District Teachers A.F.C.' by schoolmaster James Allan, Sunderland joined The Football League for the 1890–91 season. They replaced Stoke, who had failed to be re-elected, becoming the first new club to join the league since its inauguration in 1888.

During the late 19th century, they were declared the "Team of All Talents" by William McGregor. Sunderland won the league championship in the 1891–92 season, one season after joining The Football League. Sunderland successfully defended the title the following season. In the process, they became the first team to score 100 goals in a season, a feat not matched until 1919–20.

Sunderland came close to winning a third successive league championship in the 1893–94 season, finishing second behind Aston Villa. However, they regained the title in the 1894–95 season.

Sunderland came close to winning another league title in the 1897–98 season, when they finished as runners-up. That season was their last at Newcastle Road, as they moved to Roker Park the following season. After coming second in 1900–01, the club won their fourth league title in the 1901–02 season.

The club won the league again in 1913, but lost their first FA Cup final to Aston Villa, in a very tough loss. This was the closest the club has come to winning the league title and the FA Cup in the same season.

Two seasons later the First World War brought the league to a halt. After the league's resumption, Sunderland came close to winning another championship in the 1922–23 season, when they were runners-up to Liverpool. They also came close the following season, finishing third, four points from the top of the league. The club escaped relegation from the First Division by one point in the 1927–28 season.

The club's sixth league championship came in the 1935–36 season, and they won the FA Cup the following season, after a victory against Preston North End at Wembley Stadium.

The remainder of the decade saw mid-table finishes, until the league and FA Cup were suspended for the duration of the Second World War.

For Sunderland, the immediate post-war years were characterised by significant spending. This, along with record-breaking transfer fees, led to a contemporary nickname, the "Bank of England club". The club finished third in the First Division in 1950, their highest finish since the 1936 championship.

The late 1950s saw a sharp downturn in Sunderland's fortunes, and in 1958 they were relegated from the highest division for the first time in their 68-year league history.

Sunderland's absence from the top flight lasted six years. After the close call in the previous season, the club was promoted to Division One in 1964 after finishing in second place. At the end of the decade, they were again relegated to the Second Division.

Sunderland won their last major trophy in 1973, in a 1–0 victory over Leeds United in the FA Cup Final. Since 1973 only two other clubs, Southampton in 1976, and West Ham United in 1980, have equalled Sunderland's achievement of lifting the FA Cup while playing outside the top tier of English football.

By winning the 1973 FA Cup Final, Sunderland qualified for the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, the club's only appearance in European competition to date.

After spending six seasons in the Second Division, Sunderland were promoted to Division One in the 1975–76 season, however, they were relegated the following season back into Division Two.

Sunderland appeared in their first League Cup final in 1985, but lost to Norwich City.

In 1987, Sunderland saw one of the lowest points in their history, when they were relegated to the Third Division of the English league for the first time, but were promoted straight away the following season.

In 1990, they were promoted back to the top flight in unusual circumstances. Sunderland lost to Swindon Town in the play-off final, but Swindon's promotion was revoked after the club was found guilty of financial irregularities and Sunderland were promoted instead. They stayed up for one year before being relegated on the final day of the following season.

Sunderland's next outing in a major final came in 1992 when, as a Second Division club, they returned to the FA Cup final. There was to be no repeat of the heroics of 1973, as Sunderland lost to Liverpool.

After promotion from Division One in the 1995–96 season, Sunderland began their first season in the Premier League, but finished third from the bottom and were relegated back to the First Division.

In 1997, Sunderland left Roker Park, their home for 99 years. The club moved to the Stadium of Light, a 42,000-seat arena that, at the time, was the largest stadium built in England after the Second World War.

Sunderland returned to the Premier League as First Division champions in 1999 with a then-record 105 points. At the end of the season Sunderland finished seventh, with Kevin Phillips winning the European Golden Shoe in his first top-flight season, scoring 30 goals.

Another seventh-place finish in the 2000–01 season was followed by two less successful seasons, and they were relegated to the second-tier with a then-record low 19 points in 2003.

Former Ireland manager Mick McCarthy took over at the club, and, in 2005, he took Sunderland up as champions for the third time in less than ten years. However, the club's stay in the top flight was short-live as Sunderland were once again relegated, this time with a new record-low total of 15 points.

Following Sunderland's relegation from the Premier League, the club was taken over by the Irish Drumaville Consortium, headed by ex-player Niall Quinn, who appointed former Manchester United captain Roy Keane as the new manager.

Under Keane, the club rose steadily up the table with an unbeaten run of 17 games to win promotion to the Premier League, and were named winners of the Championship.

At the start of the 2009/10 campaign, Irish-American businessman Ellis Short completed a full takeover of the club, and Steve Bruce was announced as the next manager on 3 June.

Sunderland started the 2010–11 season strongly and they eventually finished 10th — which was still their highest top-flight finish for 10 years.

Bruce was sacked in November 2011, and replaced by Martin O'Neill. In February 2012, Quinn left the club with immediate effect. O'Neill was sacked in March 2013 and Italian Paolo Di Canio was announced as his replacement the following day. The appointment prompted the immediate resignation of club Vice Chairman David Miliband due to Di Canio's "past political statements". Sunderland went on to survive relegation with one game to go.

Di Canio was sacked after a poor start to the 2013–14 season, and reports of a complete breakdown in relations with his players. Gus Poyet was announced as his replacement, and led Sunderland to the 2014 Football League Cup Final, where they were defeated by Manchester City.

In March 2015 Poyet was sacked, and veteran Dutchman Advocaat was appointed as the club's new head coach, saving the club from relegation. Eight games into the 2015–16 season he resigned from the position. Sam Allardyce was appointed the next manager in October 2015. Sunderland remained in the relegation zone for much of the remainder of the 2015–16 season, but Allardyce was able to save the club from being relegated with improved form in the second half of the season.

In July 2016, Allardyce left the club to be announced as manager for the English national team following the dismissal of Roy Hodgson. Former Everton and Manchester United manager David Moyes was appointed as his replacement on a 4-year contract. Under Moyes, Sunderland made the worst ever start to a Premier League season, taking just 2 points from their opening 10 matches. The club was relegated to the second tier for the first time in ten years at the end of the 2016–17 season, finishing bottom of the table with 24 points. On 22 May 2017, Moyes resigned as manager of the club. On 15 June 2017, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, product of the Sunderland's academy, having joined the club aged eight, was transferred to Everton for a fee of £25 million, rising to a possible £30 million, a record for a British goalkeeper.

Following relegation, Simon Grayson was announced as the new manager of the club. Under Grayson, the club made a very poor start to the 2017–18 EFL Championship season (which was documented in the Netflix series Sunderland 'Til I Die), taking only 2 wins in 14 games. was sacked, and Wales head coach Chris Coleman replaced him in November 2017.

In April 2018, after a second consecutive relegation, this time to League One, the club was sold to a group led by Stewart Donald, chairman of Eastleigh F.C. and Coleman was released from his contract.

St Mirren manager Jack Ross was appointed as manager in May 2018 to take charge of what is only the club's second ever season in the third flight of the English football league system. In their first season in League One the team finished 5th and reached the playoff final, but lost to Charlton Athletic at Wembley.

On 17 October 2019, Phil Parkinson was unveiled as the Sunderland manager on a two and a half year contract.

Sunderland finished the season in 8th place, their lowest ever league position, with the final standings ultimately being determined by points per game due to football's suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In December 2020, Johnson was appointed as head coach at Sunderland.

Yep......, I was wondering what the preview would be like for this fixture and it is spot on. There is nothing more to say really. .....

...... I will say this though. Sunderland are almost as frustrating as Ipswich Town at the moment. That home defeat to Plymouth had them screaming according to a buddy who has a buddy who has a buddy who has a buddy who follows them. This'll be the game Lambert provides a mangerial masterclass and it's 3-0........, but then 2-0 defeat @ Crewe........, and so on and so forth.....

This preview sums up perfectly everything wrong with ITFC.
I didn’t renew my season ticket this season and tbh don’t regret it one bit. I have reached the point If Evans decided to walk away today and the club folded I don’t think I could care now. Really is sad times.

Hate to say it but a bad loss against Sunderland could be the end for Lambert. And in the long run, could be less costly.

There’s rumours that Lambert had the Posh, Sunderland and Crewe games to save his job. Already lost to Posh and a defeat to Sunderland could be enough. The EADT Editor has already come out officially to publicly demand Lambert goes and they don’t do that lightly.

Reckon amid all the adversity it’ll be a draw and he’ll get yet another reprieve.

Haven’t watched Eastenders for years. With no crowd, maybe we will hear Lambert ask ”What’s going on?”

One vote from 11,12 for a home team win. Can't fault it, put it down for them to win also. In a sense I'd wish to lose only to push Paul Lambert further to the point of termination. Team's going nowhere with that as* so sacrifice a few points here and there in the hope it could prove a breaking point and action is finally undertaken.

On live TV cameras is it, that's us f*cked then. Sorry but all indications point to them taking it. We're an embarrassment too often, tired of it all often. The only way it could hope to improve is with a change of personnel in relevant roles within the club.

Town 1 Sunderland 2

Renegade Statman - Ipswich Town have failed to score in 33.3% of games that Paul Lambert has been in charge.

The worst management record in #ITFC history of managers with 16+ games in charge

There was a time when this would have been an exciting fixture especially in the days when both teams were in the Premier League. In 2001 we won 5-0 at Portman Road and more recently if 2017, 5-2 in the Championship, both would have made good viewing but not any more.

All I can say now is, than f*ck the golf course is closed, with two of my mates being Mackems I don’t think I could face them tomorrow morning if we have more of the same at Portman Road tonight. This current spell at ITFC is the worse by far I can ever remember and if a massive home defeat is what it takes to get rid of Paul Lambert then bring it on. I’m no longer bothered about the “be careful what you wish for” threat because I don’t think one exists.

I’ve never watched Eastenders in my life so it will have to be Town v Sunderland on Sky. So far this month “Dry January” has been going well, tonight could just be a challenge too far.

As for a prediction I can only see defeat, Sunderland are undefeated away, and from 10 games played have 5 wins and 5 draws F17, A4, Pts 20. Given we struggle to score against even the weakest of defences I can’t see us scoring tonight so I guess it’s just a case of how many we lose by.

My prediction; Ipswich 0- 3 Sunderland

If we lose tonight i think it will be the end of PL at last. It would leave a new manager with 24 games to at least get a play off spot. Maybe Butcher and Dyer as a stop gap untill a new guy, Paul Cook would be my choice could be appointed.

Cannot remember the exact year, but an evening game between these two provided, what was for me, the best ever atmosphere i have seen at PR. That night i was in the Brittania stand and the WHOLE ground (perhaps visitors apart  ) was rocking. I think Sunderland ended the game with (possibly) 5 strikers on the pitch to try, unsucessfullly, to retrieve a result. That was some night.
Likewise, my neighbour is a Sunderland fan, so if we play llke normal and lose, i shall only go out under cover of darkness!

I wouldn’t want Butcher/ Dyer, but I’ve completely lost faith in Lambert to the point where he’s more of a hindrance just being here. If it was for a few games as interim boss then I wouldn’t mind these two. But Dyer’s too inexperienced and needs to prove he’s managerial material and Butcher has never really shone as a manager. Cook looks a decent manager on paper and reputedly turned down the Cardiff job as it was just short-term. Is he waiting for a decent long-term Championship job?

Well they would definately go 2 up front, also both of them have got the club in their blood and would immediately have the respect of players. So as a stop gap untill PaulCook or whoever arrived, i dont see a issue with them.

Well they would definately go 2 up front, also both of them have got the club in their blood and would immediately have the respect of players. So as a stop gap untill PaulCook or whoever arrived, i dont see a issue with them.
Maybe they would go two up top, but the 23’s only play one up front. I guess that’s under Lambert’s instructions to keep that throughout the club. That’s reasonable. I don’t care what formation we play as long as it suits our players and is successful. I think a big problem is the coaching. Our players look clueless with our system and I do wonder how good our coaching is. All the Crewe team looked as if they all knew what they were doing and made us look a bunch of chumps. Surely that was done to good coaching.

I’m not sure how many of our players would have respect of these two because they played for us in the past- I doubt if any of our players can remember Dyer playing for us, let alone Butcher. The fact that they played for England should get respect, but then Lambert played at a very high level and won the Champions League single-handedly.

Can’t see anyoneelse reporting it. Still comes up at 7:45.

The club website mentions the Northampton game coming forward - maybe crosswires.

Does Eastenders still start at 7:30?

Pleased Judge and Toto are not playing. Jackson lone striker yet to do it. Bishop rested.
