Wk 11. NEWMARKET July Cup

A place to chat about anything thats not football related. Most of the threads in here are completely pointless which is why people keep coming back and back. As the forum title suggests, feel free to make any post you want on any subject you wish. It also has Adult jokes (so be warned) which is the other reason people keep coming back.

The Secret Racegoer’s guide to Newmarket’s July Course
BY ADMIN · PUBLISHED JULY 8, 2019 · UPDATED JULY 8, 2019

The two sets of grandstands may be only a couple of furlongs apart, facing each other across the Heath, but there couldn’t be a greater contrast between Newmarket’s duo of racecourses.

Whereas the Rowley Mile is dominated by its towering Millennium stand, all glass and chrome, and trying to impress, the July Course is more sedate and comfortable in its country-casual attire.

Image

The Rowley Mile looks out over a vast and sometimes bleak expanse of land with a line of trees in the distance. The July Course is tucked behind those trees, which border the far side running rail, and there’s little to indicate the open space which lies beyond the greenery.

Probably helped by racing when the weather can be at its best – it’s not called the July Course for nothing – the summer venue is relaxed, with all the facilities close at hand.

The grandstands are built of brick, wood replaces chrome and the feeling is of faded glory, but anything done to modernise them would achieve little and destroy the ambience.

Modernity has been introduced behind the stands by a series of buildings housing bars, food outlets, tote windows and toilets. Sympathetic to their surroundings, the predominant materials used are wooden cladding and white pavilion-style roofing.

Older buildings, such as the weighing-room, have thatched roofs, and there’s a genteelness about the place, although possibly not when Friday night is music night.

Image

Viewing
Something which both Newmarket courses have in common is that viewing is limited.

On the Rowley Mile, because you can get further up in the stands and due to the rising ground, there’s pretty much an uninterrupted view down the straight as far as the mile start which, for some reason, appears to be further away than mile starts at other racecourses.

The stands on the July course don’t offer the same opportunity to climb quite so high. So, as with the Rowley Mile, you are very much dependent on the big screen and sometimes on a sunny day that’s not so easy to see.

The July’s picturesque parade ring is adjacent to the track, sited beyond the winning post. The small winner’s enclosure is separate to the paddock, positioned on the main thoroughfare linking the enclosures.

The layout of the enclosures means that Grandstand patrons have to make their way round behind the Premiere Enclosure to access the paddock.

Verdict
If the Rowley Mile is somewhat brash, with the reputation for the odd exchange of fisticuffs, the Adnams July Course (to give its full name – but let’s not) is by contrast gentrified, albeit the Secret Racegoer hasn’t been to the track on a music night.

The mood is relaxed, the racing competitive and, on a sunny day, it’s a lovely way to fund the bookmakers’ pension plans.

Worse…….. Baynes. The new Greggs. Never been in a greggs for a while, Wolfie. But Baynes??! Holy sh*t, dude…… their bacon rolls & coffee are just unbelievable. They do a decent fudge donut as well.
Doc once said there is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. Fairly certain its the good stuff in the donuts. 👍

Did you get free “pick n mix” with the shares?

………………………….
Horse-by-horse guide to the field,

ART POWER
Looked to have sprinting world at his feet as a three-year-old last summer but has found it hard to break into the top tier, though recent Diamond Jubilee third to Dream Of Dreams was arguably right up there close to his best. Could just be a bit vulnerable again on the steep rise to the line this weekend.

BRANDO
Veteran campaigner who has often outperformed expectations on the big stage well into his twilight years. Record in this race reads 3276 and this year's evidence suggests he may be a step slower again. Can burst blood vessels too, something that happened again in the Chipchase last time out.

EMARAATY ANA

Has at least maintained a fair level of consistency this season but he's just not performing at anything like the sort of level that's going to be required to win a race of this nature. Official mark of 107 a shade generous and still a stone shy of what's needed at Newmarket.

GLEN SHIEL

One of the success stories of 2020, especially given his role in Hollie Doyle's rise, and nothing wrong with his form this time around either. Beaten a length by Dream Of Dreams in the Diamond Jubilee which is marginally better than his Haydock effort against the same horse in the autumn and the unsettled forecast should result in the ground playing to his strengths this weekend. Gets the trip well (raced over middle-distances in his youth) and could be really suited to this track providing he doesn't get too much pace pressure through the early stages.

July Cup Betting Trends:
From the last 19 years, we’ve put together the most important trends to consider when sorting through the July Cup 2021 field:

18/19 – Aged 5 or younger
17/19 – Had won over 6f before
15/19 – Ran at Royal Ascot last time out
16/19 – Returned 12/1 or shorter in the betting
15/19 – Had between 1-3 previous runs that season
14/19 – Had won a Group 1 or 2 race before
14/19 – Won by a horse trained in the UK
11/19 – Placed last time out
9/19 – Ran last time out in either the King’s Stand Stakes or Diamond Jubilee
9/19 – Unplaced favourites
7/19 – Won their previous race
5/19 – Winning favourites
4/19 – Irish-trained winners (O’Brien trained 2 of the last 3 winners)
2/19 – Trained By Hughie Morrison
1/19 – French-trained winners
The average winning SP in the last 18 years is 8/1
Just one horse aged older than 5 has won since 1968
Aidan O’Brien has won the race 5 times before (1999, 2001, 2010, 2018 & 2019)

Trainers Vincent O’Brien, Charles Molson and Aidan O’Brien are the most successful stables in the July Cup – winning it 5 times each – while the legendary Lester Piggott made this race his own winning it an incredible 10 times between 1957 and 1992!

Saturday Odds
https://www.racingpost.com/racecards/17 ... 10/783971/

Still 19 Runners so if 17 or more actually run, first 4 past the post pay out. :D

BETTING FORECAST 4/1 Oxted, Starman, 5/1 Dragon Symbol, 7/1 Creative Force, Rohaan, 12/1 Glen Shiel, 14/1 Art Power, Supremacy, 16/1 Chil Chil, Extravagant Kid, 25/1 Line Of Departure, Method, 33/1 Good Effort, 40/1 Glorious Journey, Miss Amulet, 50/1 Garrus, Summerghand, 66/1 Brando, Emaraaty Ana.

COMMENTS
Art Power.... Creditable third in the Diamond Jubilee but again looks set for minor honours at best
Brando ....Grand campaigner but he's unlikely to make it fifth time lucky in this race
Chil Chil ....Won AW Group 3 at Newcastle two weeks ago; improving but this is a stiffer task
Creative Force.... Improving 3yo; won the Jersey Stakes last time, taking record to 5-6; enters calculations
Dragon Symbol.... Fast-improving sprinter; first past the post (demoted to second) in Commonwealth Cup
Emaraaty Ana.... Finished behind some of these rivals in the Duke Of York Stakes; stiff task
Extravagant Kid.... US sprinter; bagged G1 honours at Meydan in March; third to Oxted in the King's Stand
Garrus ....Appeared to run well (66-1 fifth) in the Diamond Jubilee but needs to pull out more
Glen Shiel ....Has form figures of 212 in G1 contests, all on soft ground; ideally needs rain
Glorious Journey.... Smart 7f performer; won the Criterion here two weeks ago; bit to prove back at 6f
Good Effort.... Has a better strike-rate on artificial surfaces than on turf; tough assignment
Line Of Departure ....Listed winner at Salisbury on seasonal debut; largely progressive but this is tougher
Method ....Finished behind Rohaan and Dragon Symbol at Haydock seven weeks ago; more needed
Miss Amulet.... Won last year's Lowther; down the field in Irish 1,000 Guineas on reappearance
Oxted.... Won this race 12 months ago; back to that form when winning the King's Stand last time
Rohaan ....Massive improver since last December; won the Wokingham three weeks ago; has to be feared
Starman ....Progressive colt; won the Duke Of York Stakes two months ago; one to follow
Summerghand ....Finished nearer last than first in the Diamond Jubilee; others preferred
Supremacy.... Highly progressive as a 2yo; flopped badly on sole run this term; now blinkered

Hey John, I can’t believe this comp has gone completely off my radar. I’ll be back next week to see if I can get myself off the bottom of the table between now and the end of the month.

Andy I did leave you this reply in the Wk 10 thread, am sure you can understand my reasoning.

Sorry Andy but I deleted you and IpswichtownN01.after missing so many weeks.
Reason; I didn't think it would be fair on the others who have posted bets nearly every week, you or ITNno1 could make just one bet and win it,

Nothing personal to each of you, but it makes sense and being fair.

Starman dominates with superb turn of foot to land best July Cup in years

Starman produced a sensational surge in the final furlong to cut down his rivals and run out the dominant winner of the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket.

Having been outpaced and ridden going into the Dip, Starman picked up in serious style as the field hit the rising ground and flew past the likes of last year’s winner Oxted, Commonwealth Cup second Dragon Symbol and front-runner Art Power to take the prize for trainer Ed Walker, jockey Tom Marquand and owner-breeder David Ward.

Marquand described the winner as being "as close to a racecar as you can get" after his turbocharged finish to the race, but things had looked a little more sketchy as the runners passed the halfway point.

"They had me in a bit of trouble at the three-pole going downhill and as these top-class sprinters were quickening it all got a bit tight and he was inexperienced compared to a lot of these," Marquand said.

"But my god did he have a turn of foot when he hit that rising ground and the last 100 metres is where it counts. That was a top performance.

"It’s fantastic for Ed and the team, it’s so well deserved. He’s an absolute star. This lad is as close to a racecar as you can get."
