Pre Match Thoughts - Mike

Perspective Required I think.........

Despite the disappointing result at Bolton the last week or so has not been all doom and gloom, yes the main event ended in bitter disappointment with a lacklustre performance culminating in a Two goal defeat to a rejuvenated Bolton Wanderers who took the opportunity to do the double of us. The better news of the week is the clubs ability to secure the services of striker Macauley Bonne for the remainder of the season, the top scorer has looked a little more like his old self in the last couple of games and as such is a key figure in the team. Perhaps more importantly is the permanent signing of Goalkeeper Christian Walton who signs on for Two and a half Years with the club having an option on an additional year, this is very good news indeed as Walton has gradually been getting and better and looks a very good keeper.

Image

Back to the Bolton game and I think it is safe to say that every Town fan was very disappointed at the result and surprised at the level of performance given what we had witnessed the week before, however, having seen only the highlights I personally did not see it as quite the disaster that others did, we seemed to have a lot of the ball going by the stats and created more chances, we had more shots at goal and more Corners so is it a case that the result was everything and the actual performance matters not to some ? That said some that attended the game we were poor and their opinion has to be respected as stats and highlights can often be very misleading. I do however feel a sense of perspective is needed here, we are NOT going to win every game all of a sudden, nor are we going to play well every week, we are still very much a work in progress with a new manager hardly in the door and we have after all won Two of his opening Three games in charge, I just felt some of the negativity in some quarters after the game was uncalled for and very knee jerk, we aren't suddenly "back to square One" at all, it was a bad day at the office and hopefully nothing more than that, the boss actually felt much of what we did was good and we had control of the game for large parts of it so I take comfort from the fact he must be seeing some of what we work on in training all week bearing fruit, of course we all wanted the win but we still have this run of fixtures coming up that could well see us go on a very good run.

With January moving along at pace we are still to see much in the way of new arrivals at Portman Road although at the time of writing it looks as though we are close to securing the services of Bristol City Midfielder Tyreeq Barkinson on loan for the remainder of the season, perhaps not an obvious area of the team that needs to be strengthened numbers wise but perhaps McKenna feels we need some added experience and quality in there, whether this lad is the answer time will tell but it looks like we are going to be wheeling and dealing a little bit in the next couple of weeks, I still think we definitely need to be looking at bringing in another Centre back for sure and possibly a left sided defensive player what with Hayden Coulsen always being injured, in fact he is another I would be sending back.

Next up is the visit to Portman Road of Accrington Stanley who it has to be said are currently enjoying a very good run of results, unbeaten in Five with impressive Draws against MK Dons & Sunderland and an eye catching single goal victory against Rotherham United, if any proof was needed this is not a gimme it is those Three results alone, let's also not forget the small matter of our defeat at their place earlier in the season which will hopefully inspire us more than what we witnessed at Bolton last weekend.

One positive for me is that Accrington concede a lot of goals so I am hopeful that our potent attack can exploit this weakness and not only create some chances but convert them too, even when we are not winning we do in the most part look dangerous going forward and this may just be good enough to tip the scales in our favour. Despite last weeks defeat we are still only Eight points off the top Six so it is still very much game on but as each week passes the task gets harder and harder and there will come a point where only a run of wins will do, I feel that point is now, Accrington, Wimbledon, Lincoln, Gillingham & Doncaster are all coming up in the next Six games and we really should not be fearing any of those teams, of course no game is easy but we should be approaching them all in the belief we can win them, that would definitely see us on the cusp of where we want to be.

With another fair sized crowd behind the boys I think Town will nick this one albeit by a slender margin, as stated Accrington are no pushovers but hopefully the crowd can act as the Twelfth man to get us over the line, should we achieve the win it would be Three from Four for Kieran McKenna and that is a decent start in anyone's eyes. So it's a Town win for me and hopefully the Three crucial points, anything else would be a hammer blow as home games really have to be won. COYB'S

The Opposition – Accrington Stanley

Image

The original town club, Accrington, was amongst the twelve founder members of the Football League in 1888, before resigning from the league after just five years. A team called Stanley Villa already existed at the time, named as such because they were based at the Stanley W.M.C. on Stanley Street in Accrington. With the demise of Accrington, Stanley Villa took the town name to become Accrington Stanley.

Accrington had been without a football team following the collapse of the original Accrington Stanley in 1966. The original team had been formed in 1891 and played in the Football League from 1921 to March 1962, but had spent its final four seasons in the Lancashire Combination. At a meeting at Bold Street Working Men's Club in 1968 the revival was initiated, and in August 1970 the new club played at a new ground, the Crown Ground. Eric Whalley, a local businessman, took control of the club in 1995 and began the development of the club's ground. After the club was relegated in 1999, Whalley appointed John Coleman as manager.

The club's rise to the Football League is attributed in part to the windfall of hundreds of thousands of pounds reaped by the sell-on clause in the December 2001 transfer of former Stanley star Brett Ormerod to Southampton, which paid Blackpool over a million pounds for his contract. Stanley had taken £50,000 from Blackpool in 1997, with the agreement that Blackpool would pay Accrington a quarter of what it might have received if it in turn transferred Ormerod to another team. The 2002–03 championship of the Northern Premier League followed quickly on Accrington's getting the cash.

Following the 2002–03 win of the Northern Premier League, the club was promoted for the first time in its history to the Football Conference. The club's first-ever game in the league was away to another re-formed club, Aldershot Town, on Sunday 10 August 2003. The game was shown live on Sky Sports and resulted in a 1–2 loss. The season was a success, with a final league position of 10th being achieved. The highlight of that first season in the 5th tier was a sensational run to the FA Cup 3rd round, only losing in a replay away to League One side Colchester United.

The following season saw the club become a full time professional outfit. The 2004–05 also resulted in a 10th-place finish.

The 2005–06 season saw the return of Stanley to the Football League. Finishing on 91 points, the club went on a 19-game unbeaten run stretching from October to March, leaving the club an easy passage to League Two after 46 years away.

The club was involved in a relegation battle throughout its first season in the 4th tier. A run of 5 wins in the last 9 games of the season led to a 20th-place finish and was enough to save the club from relegation in its first season back in the Football League.

The 2007–08 season produced more of the same, with the club involved in another relegation battle.5 wins in the final 12 games were enough to secure a 17th-place finish and another season in the 4th tier of English Football.

Performance during the 2008–09 season improved, with the club achieving a modest 16th-place finish in League Two.

The 2009–10 season was far better, with the club pushing for a playoff place at the turn of the year. A run of 9 wins in 10 League games saw the club with a chance of making the playoffs, only for this to fade in March/April.

The club reached the Football League Two play-offs during the 2010–11 season, one of the most successful in its history. A run of 1 loss in 19 games, from February till May, saw the club finish in a best-ever 5th position, eventually losing to League Two newcomers Stevenage in the Playoff Semi-finals.

2011–12 was a season of transition for the club. The loss of no less than six of the playoff-chasing side of the previous season was a tough act to follow. Following a shaky start to the season the arrival of Bryan Hughes in October transformed the club's fortunes. A run of 6 wins in 7 games over the Christmas period saw the club briefly enter the play-offs. However, following the sale of club captain Andrew Procter to Preston North End in the January 2012 transfer window, the third-longest serving management team of John Coleman and Jimmy Bell departed for Rochdale.

Former Burnley and club favourite Paul Cook was brought in as manager, along with the promotion of Leam Richardson from caretaker manager to full-time assistant. Only 3 wins in the final 17 games of the season was a pretty poor finish the season. However, this meant the club achieved a solid mid-table finish in 14th position.

On 18 September 2014, Coleman was confirmed as manager of Accrington Stanley for his second spell with the club.

On 17 April 2018, they were promoted to League One following a 2-0 win over Yeovil Town.

Last season Stanley finished in 11th place.

The Manager – John Coleman

Vote to win 3 - 1. Two schools of thought here, either the players realize the level of opportunity in the weeks ahead and this here game with it or revert to what we already know. Years back playing this opposition in league contest would be viewed surreal but this now is the reality of it.

A big game for us as an indicator of the rest of the season. Win and the playoffs are doable. Lose or draw and another season in this awful league looks to be our lot. 2-0

Town: Walton, Donacien, Woolfenden, Edmundson, Burns, Celina, Evans, Morsy (C), Vincent-Young, Bonne, Chaplin.

Subs: Holy, Burgess, Carroll, Edwards, Jackson, Norwood, Pigott.

So what’s that? 3-4-2-1 ?

Aluko out of the 18. Injury/ Covid? And Jackson making the bench -must be injuries/ covid if he makes the bench. 3 strikers on the bench.

18 squad for today very striker heavy with Piggott, Jackson and Norwood on bench. Shame Aluko not playing. Where have all our midfielders gone? Also Holy on bench, hope Walton stays fit.

We must have illness or injuries with Akuko, Hladky and Penney not even being in the squad.

:D Who knows . I do sometimes wonder if there’s any real difference in these formations when the ebb and flow of the game gets underway. Interesting to see how Celina and Chaplin get on against a pretty physical team.

McKenna talks him up. Haven’t seen much of him to get excited about. This side looks lacking in physicality.
