I don't think this is the right way to deal with the time issue. I think the ref should stop the clock when play stops. That way you only play to 90mins which fans and players can always keep track of. It works OK in rugby (no that rugby has all the answers by any means.....) and everyone knows what time is remaining.

I agree, it's a farce when so much time is added on at the Ref's discretion

I think the biggest problem is the lack of consistency across the referee population. It would be interesting to see the averages by referee and by football clubs as some waste more time than others.

Yep, I like how the NFL does it with a time clock visible to all. I don't know why this isn't the norm, it makes too much sense I suppose.

I like the leniency on contact rule. Hopefully, it will cut down on floppers and divers.

Not sure about the yellow cards and dissent ruling. I think the Ref's already have enough control on that without giving them more authority to brandish yellow cards...which could culminate in more red cards.

No problems with most of this and especially with clamping down on players 'mobbing' the ref. I always felt that only the captain should approach the ref to challenge decisions just as in Rugby and still think this.

There may also be an argument for restricting substitutions to certain fixed moments in a game (unless injury related) so that subs then come on in groups rather than one after another to lengthen the game and reduce intensity. I really think reducing intensity by time wasting is the real issue here not the amount of time itself. We could have no subs allowed in first half for example and then only at half time, 60 and 80 minutes in H2..

Also think that there should be a maximum of 100 minutes to a game in fairness to all involved, with possible exception being concussion or other severe medical or crowd related emergency. Keeping this time productive rather than just adding on time for this and that should be the focus IMO.

It's all the f**king norm now. Go into any game in any league in any competition and you'll see or read about fixtures extending to 95 or 100 minutes (or beyond)

it goes against all tradition but the World Cup / Euro events of recent years kind of set a standard or benchmark. Guess it gives paying audiences something extra but kind of feel in a minority it's bullshit the industry can do without. Thought back for a moment the Old Trafford hell match back in '95 : any further play back then (if it had been rightfully implemented) we could have lost by 14 or something.

Very true. And it is the norm nowadays to feign injury…… to collapse like you’ve been struck by the Edinburgh to York East Coast LNER (on a day when those guys are not on strike) ….. to look like death may be the better option….., but then bounce back up and be the one to take the freekick, (unlike the past; crunching tackles were the norm and laughed at by the receiver)…….. and also the “norm” of taking it into the corner from the 85th minute until the 98th minute. Count that up…….. how many minutes on your complete season ticket are you watching that type of stuff by the 10K a week guys?

I think I did that once watching a game on TV and the ball was only in play for 61 or 62 minutes, so you'd end up with a lot of exhausted players if you stopped the time and made them play the full 90. You'd have to change it to 35 minute halfs or something stupid and that's just changing things too much. Fewer subs and cut down on stupid celebrations, time wasting etc and they wouldn't have to add so much on.
