Delap

Post by hallamblue » Mon Apr 07, 2025 8:58 am

There's been a suggestion that MC might buy back Delap.... there's also a suggestion that we might loan him out for a season to a PL club ( possible suitors Villa , Forest), but he obviously remains our player, and if we regain PL status the following season he returns to us.

What would people think to that?

I guess it depends on how much wheeler dealering we need to do to prepare a squad for a hopeful Premier League return!
I'd be very much in favour of a season long loan to a PL club as I see it as a win-win situation, if he has a successive decent top flight season; He either comes back to a newly promoted Ipswich team or his value increases even further and we make more money.

Maybe this would be a good subject for a new topic? For me personally, I feel we will need to concentrate on overhauling an ageing midfield (hence cashing in on Delap). I love Morsy, but along with Luongo, they are both likely to struggle beyond another Championship season. There's only Taylor (possibly Cameron Humphreys) left in our midfield engine room, neither of them are Morsy-like players. I'd love to keep Cajuste but that just will not happen I feel.
I like Leif's energy levels, but I think we have seen a more than capable replacement LB already at the club. Therefore I wouldn't be averse to losing him if the price is right.

I think it would be smarter to cash in, sadly. Sure his stock might go up, or he'll be useful to us if we get promoted again, but the chance of poor form, injury, or too much time on the bench is too much, that could decimate his value. I'd assume he'd be running down his contract by that point too.

I don't know whether other teams have done similar things, it seems a bit farfetched and hopeful to me, the player isn't going to want to float about on an old, far less valuable contract without certainty either.

The idea of loaning him to a PL club next season and then having him back the following season if we get promoted is a terrible one.

Just imagine - we loan him out next season and by some miracle manage to achieve promotion. What would then happen to the striker who helped us get promoted, maybe scoring a lot of goals in the process? Yeah he'd be back to facing cameo appearances for the last few minutes of a game. What would that do do his confidence? Terrible idea IMO.

Delap's release clause is only £30m....absolute chicken feed to any PL clubs. We would be giving him away ..... hope we do opt for the loan route

I know it's been reported in places as that, but I've also seen £40m if relegated. I don't think Ashton would be stupid enough to accept £30m in the contracts negs, that would be very poor business when buying player as investments that aren't risk free.

I hope you're right Ricco. The £30m fig was quoted in The Guardian ...so not a red top

As I understand it, the release clause is for £30m, and there is also a 20% sell-on due to MC.

Let's be honest, any PL club (including the 3 to be promoted) will be able to afford the £30m, so I guess it all boils down to Delap himself. Does he want to spend next season spending most of his time warming the bench, or does he want to play every game for Ipswich in the Championship?

The release clause is bad business, because it means that there will be no bidding war - interested clubs have only to offer £30m and we are legally bound to let him go to the club of his choosing. Assuming there are no add-ons to the £15m we paid for him, we would make £12m after the 20% sell-on - not bad profit for a year but could have been so much better.

Would love to see him stay, the only bright spot in a dismal season, sadly there's little to no chance.

Nobody knows what is n his contract of work ffs. As Mark Ashton alluded to, any such details are a breach of contract . So all this speculation is and quite frankly bollox 🤷‍♂️

Apart from that time after time they're nearly always correct or near to the mark. Often leaked by the players and agents themselves to get club's attention.... Yawn.

MB just doesn't like ANYTHING i post, and will never miss a chance to ridicule my posts, instead of taking part in any meaningful dialogue and actually try to have a conversation on this forum . He really is a piece of work and an utter bore.

Well there is no smoke without fire and the Telegraph reporting the same today (not that they are the font of all knowledge), so it is probably all done bar the direction in terms of which club he goes to. Thanks for the memories, Liam and just wish you could do one more season with us but c'est la vie!

What I'm not sure about BW, is just because there's a £30-40m clause in his contract, does that mean that's all he would go for, or if say 3 clubs all wanted him and all three offered the trigger amount, could nit one club go, oh, well pay more to get him?

This thread is entirely my own opinion and is a valid point of discussion, given that our owners are American, and we are backed by US pension funds. Both have been greatly affected by Trumps tariffs.

So instead of trashing, dismissing, this topic, why can't you engage in it?

No if that's correct about the 30 million they won't pay any more, Delap can choose which club he wants and probably the one that pays him most in wages I'm sorry to say.
And Hallam I don't see anything wrong with your posts and why not use TWTD I do but I'm fed up with the bickering on here so you won't see many posts from me in the future ( not much of a loss 🤭🤣)

I do use TWTD CB....

Tbh I can't see the problem transferring topics of conversation between forums to raise discussion. MB is being silly, and certainly doesn't enter into the spirit of social media where ideas, discussions are transferred. I never try to make out they are my ideas or discussion. In fact I always reference where it's come from.

If he goes will he end up like so many before him? Sat on the bench, the odd cameo appearance and then disappears never to be seen again?

Stay with us for another season please!

Then maybe I'm paranoid too. I've responded to your posts in the way I have because it is obvious you are taking every opportunity to jump on posts by HB... it's getting very repetitive, very annoying, and brings a negative vibe on to the forum and messes up threads (imo).

It's a forum... you don't need evidence, you don't need things to hold up in the court of law, it's hypotheticals, possibilities, speculation and opinions, otherwise there would be practically nothing on here.

If you have a problem with HB then stop being a child and either sort it out in private messages to spare the rest of us, or block her so you don't see her posts. It's really quite simple.

It doesn't matter what had been said in PRIVATE, this is a PUBLIC forum, so stop ruining it for the rest of us. If you're so upset, then talk to the mods PRIVATELY, talk to HB PRIVATELY, or block her, stop airing your dirty laundry on the forum.
