Not sure which Town that is but it isn't Portman Road or "Swede" either.

It maybe 50 plus years ago but I'd recognise him if I saw him tomorrow.

it says its at Norwich City in the FA Cup 27th January 1962 , v Ipswich Town. so the search goes on.

Those pictures are great, Wolfie. Love all the older 50s/60s photos of football crowds, just prior to things going tits up in the violent 70s. Nowadays, those elderly gentlemen walking around the pitch would just be ridiculed by the moron contingent of the modern game.

Unless they are Norwich fans......., then they get ridiculed anyway......., by everyone eh?!

yeah days long gone now mate, at the Mol you could hire a wood crate for an old penny to stand on if you were short. best thing was getting at the back and being passed down to the front above the crowd. got the best seat in front of the wall.

I remember one freezing night game v Man U I stood on this crate like all the other kids, when the final whistle went I was stuck to the crate and I couldn't feel me legs lol. the big crack was if you returned the crate you got your penny back. used to make a few bob collecting them up from the lazy gits who weren't bothered about a penny.

I remember a Hibs v Airdrie match at Broomfield many moons ago on a dark shitty December night, ......., I bought a Bovril, (I hate Bovril)......, my wee cousin says, "You hate Bovril!"......, I said, "I know", then stuck three numb fingers in it!

Yeah Bovril smells ok, but couldn't drink the stuff either.

I'm sure I've picked a couple of my Suffolk uncles out from one of those pic's on page 2 of that site.. trouble is I can't seem to put any of those other pictures up, an old friend did those 2 pic's above and will have to bend his ear again,,

those were the best seats, most of those kids behind the wall were on crates.

this picture was around the same time as the Ipswich ones. . I think there was 61k there that day.

Great pictures imho the crowds those days were massive but you always got the feeling that you wouldn't have troubles .

There was no room to make trouble, everyone was jammed in too tight to move. In those days 28,000 would squash into a Potman Road which had stands half the size they are now.

Well guys I was at PR the day we played Leeds in that epic FA Cup encounter when there was 38,010 in the ground. It took me 40 mins to edge my way up the stairs to get to the back of the North Stand. Only to be met with a ground that had all four stands packed with fans. You could only see a sea of heads in the stands. No upper bodys or arms. In fact your arms were either stuck up in the aid for 90 mins (to clap and sing), or pinned down by your sides. You breathed in and out as "one" cos there was no space. There was no segregation in the NS then and Leeds fans has 3/4 of the stand that day with a"thin blue line " of police seperating the fans ......there was no bloody room for a punch up lol!

I also recall a barrier collapsing under the weight of numbers and a Town fan had collapsed at the back if the stand. Well he was passed over the heads of Tiwn fans from the back the stand down to the waiting St John's Ambulance mob on the pitch.

Bloody hell. TwTD' s eh!!

I too was present that day Liz it was exactly as you describe it, in fact you could hardly breath at all, it was the closest I have ever come to being crushed at a football and god only knows how those poor souls felt at Hillsborough that fateful day cus it was quite scary at PR against Leeds and not a patch on what happened in Sheffield.

Interesting to read those comments. It's clear that whilst a few moaners complain about all seater stadiums, we have really come a long way in terms of safety since those days. Of course there is a nostalgia for those days amongst those of us who are old enough to remember but I'm trying to think objectively.

Those most certainly were the days Liz, and by far my favourite period of all time being a Town supporter.. That Cup Tie was probably the most dramatic fixture ever played by Ipswich and although I missed the replay at Elland Road I went to second and third replays at Filbert Street, in fact it was my first ever visit to Filbert Street, and what an amazing second replay it was too.

Not quite sure how we've got to this under Mr Swede as I guess he was long gone at this stage of ITFC. I think his era was when a full house was circa 28,000 mostly all standing.

Remember a game at Portman Road vs Bolton in the late 60s somebody hurled a beer bottle from the back of the stand , it hit someone on the head. I can still see the person on the grass in front of the stand with his head bleeding

one of the good things back then was you didn't have to buy tickets in advance, if it was going to be a full house you just got there early and got in the queue. most grounds opened the gates at 12.30. my earliest start was 1am Saturday outside Anfield for a 3pm kick. not the best place after dark

Anyway back on topic, where is your Mr Swede. there must be a pic out there.
