It is 48 years today that 145 people mainly children were killed in the small village of Aberfan near Merthyr Tydfil. At tonight's game we expecting the Club to ask for a show of respect for those who lost their lives when the coal heap slid onto the village school. I was there that day in my capacity as a Police Constable. The memory will be with me for ever. RIP.

I think all of us who were living that day will also always remember the Aberfan disaster. It's hard to believe it was so long ago.

I have read about this terrible tragedy and seen pics etc and what a shocking thing for anyone to have to witness, I hope iot is well respected tonight which I am sure it will be.

A truly shocking disaster and you must have witnessed things one should never see.
I was around 15 yrs old when this happened ,and I can still remember exactly where I was when the news broke. and its stayed in my mind ever since.
RIP to those poor soles and there families.

I can remember it, a terrible disaster - and from memory, one that should have ben avoided. I'm sure there had been warnings about the danger.

You are right about warnings. The NCB and Government had been warned about the stability of the tip which was situated on top of the mountain. During the weeks before the disaster a lake had built up inside the tip due to the heavy rain which had fallen in the days before. On that dreadful morning the tip began to slide and engulfed the school and a number of houses.
The enquiry blamed the NCB but no one was brought to book. The most disgusting thing was that the Government took money from a fund set up for families to pay for the cleanup.
I can tell you that there were many boys in blue with tears in their eyes that day me included.
But one organisation I must praise for their work that day was the Salvation Army who were exceptional in their support for families and rescue teams.

I remember that well pathay . Was a small kid myself when that happened. But even at that age I could understand the enormity of the disaster.

Yeah a bit scary but on the plus side, match tickets will be a bit cheaper in around 15 months time. and I wonder how far a bus pass would take us at weekends

My missus was excited to get a bus pass and kept on about it, she hadn't been on a bus since 1977 and still hasn't 3yrs after getting it. strange creatures aye.

To be fair John I've only used my bus pass a handful of times in 3 years, and that's only when I meet a former work pal in Leicester City centre and we go on a pub crawl in for a few hours. I'ts such hard work using public transport as there's only about 3 buses each day from my village to the City Centre. I've had more value out of my Rail Card though as I regularly travel to London and there are huge savings to be had if you book well in advance. That said I seem to be driving there far more than using the train, probably the ball ache getting South of the river from St Pancras.

As for match tickets it seems pretty much 50/50 these days whether clubs apply concessions at age 60 or 65, but even then very few check.

Getting older certainly has a few perks, although to be fair I'd rather be staying young.

I'm coming down to the Ipswich v Wolves with my daughter on the 4th Nov, Will try and get this rail card before then. if not I'll be driving. . wonder if I can get a concession in the car park

Recognized the name and knew the incident occured in Wales but wasn't sure exactly where. Read up a little and didn't realize the full severity of the day in question. Hope the tribute in Cardiff was a success on what would have been a poignant night.
