Re: Ipswich Town vs Derby County Match Preview
One positive from today is that this defeat was perhaps able to lend some perspective. By that we realize we're not the finished article just yet and nobody should be taking a promotion for granted. Yes of course I'm disappointed with the outcome, the senior match official had a poor afternoon by all accounts and maybe wasn't experienced enough to handle a game of such magnitude today but what's done is done. Other rival teams also dropped points so the damage isn't as extensive as it could've been today.
One concern is that this setback may follow on into the Southampton replay game as heads will have dropped a little after this, and while many couldn't care less about an FA Cup run, we do have a winnable game ahead in not only the third round replay but the fourth round draw also. After that, we can just keep going and see how far it can take us, and I for one, would thoroughly welcome a good run in this years competition. People say the cup is a distraction, but if you're involved in both it's good for morale and gives the players something to achieve on two fronts.
All told, it's a defeat, but a defeat to one of the teams that will be in contention for a promotion place and we know they're a decent side. It doesn't always make the loss sound any better and the overall game wasn't the best of exhibitions by all accounts, but we can regard today something of a learning experience and rectify things in subsequent fixtures.

Re: Ipswich Town vs Derby County Match Preview
Nothing today is terminal, it was ALWAYS going to happen sooner or later, thankfully it happened on a day when Bournemouth, and Watford lost and Boro were held so we are still only ONE POINT off the top, I would suggest we have got away with it today, the only time in history I dont mind a Norwich win and it happens so it's ok. Winnable games coming up and by the end of Jan we could be top, not despondant at all.
Bring on the Saints Wednesday evening, I fancy us to turn them over.

we were poor today but still had the better chances. We gave the ball away cheaply far to often. Murphy was very quiet, Hyam was poor today. 1 mistake by Tonmy the difference. Eustace should been sent off earlier and we should had a penalty. Positives we are still 1 point off the top. Mcgoldrick has 5 bookings now does he miss Wednesday's game?

5 card threshold passed end of November, it is anyone getting 10 that has to worry now.

Re: Ipswich Town vs Derby County Match Preview
despite missing the game due to having a bloody heart attack last saturday and only getting out of hospital on friday,I too could see many positives from the game.
Yes a few heads went down when they were gifted a goal, but none that threaten a long term effect of the games to come.
I also believe we could cause Soton a problem in the replay...
Have to say well done to our German friends from FC fortuna who i understand came in 3 coaches and totaled 170 in numbers
Sorry i missed you all.....will make up for it next time around

i dont think anything needs to be rectified. I believe town had the better chances and derby didnt look like scoring from open play, town defence did a good job as usual except for one individual error . The ref had a poor game, im not sure it was a penalty but im sure mcgoldrick didnt intentionally kick out when we were through on goal and he even got a booking for it. All in all im pleased with the performance and i feel the team should feel a little hard done by not to finish with at least a draw if not a win. Lets get out of the cup and get back to winning ways in the championship. A few winable games coming up.saint jude wrote:One positive from today is that this defeat was perhaps able to lend some perspective. Really sorry to hear that you've been poorly, Dave. It's a bugger! But am sure we all send you best wishes for a speedy return to full fighting fitness. Turning S'otton over on Wednesday, followed by Milwall next weekend, should help!loudnproud wrote:despite missing the game due to having a bloody heart attack last saturday and only getting out of hospital on friday,I too could see many positives from the game.

Very disappointing but not the time to slash wrists, we never got out of first gear and though we started brightly never had the finishing touches needed. The game was lost in midfield for me as Derby seemed to have two extra men and oceans of time. Need to bounce back as im sure we will.
On another note hope your ok Dave aka LnP take it easy mate.

Having watched it again, we had loads more chances than Derby even if we werent at the races ourselves. No need to feel to down, Two big decisions went against us too.

Yip. Two "game changing" decisions. So I reckon people have reason to be slightly peed off. But as has been said, only 1 point behind, other games in favour, so no damage.

Re: Ipswich Town vs Derby County Match Preview
For me we showed too much respect to derby and on many occasions panicked when in possession ,can not remember either Anderson or Hyam playing 1 decent pass and Chambers also hoofing blindly when having so much time, for me the midfield department was not showing at all.Yes we have poorer midfielders than most championship teams regarding quality but passing is a very basic skill when under no pressure. When can we have Bru and Bishop in same team?
That aside Derby who nullified us in areas that mattered hardly looked like scoring until we let them.
Would really like to see some pace in wide areas,Anderson whilst not slow has very little quality and i noticed in the second half when Mcgoldrick could have slipped him through chose to turn the other way and play simple showing he has little confidence he could not waste the ball.

Re: Ipswich Town vs Derby County Match Preview
Sorry to hear that Dave. Hope you're on the mend soon.
For me the difference between the sides was the midfield. I have no idea why Hyam was briughtbinto such a crucial game when hes hardly kicked a ball in 2+ months. Yes Skuse was ill and didnt play, but I'd havd probably had either Bru and Bishop or Bru and Hunt or Ambrose and Bru.
Derby came with a game play. Its called diving at the merest touch. And so they did. The ref , I suggest , travelled down on the Derby team bus, because he was so bloody biased (how else did Derby survive until the 90min before that player was sent off??), he probanly had a Derby shirt on underneath his refs shirt. Tgere is also beeb a suggestion that this ref is actually a scum fan!! If true , why was he allowed near this game? As MM said, "ref, you have given us nothing all afternoon". How true was that.
There's also two ways of looking at scums win vs Bournemouth. Some may say great, theyve helped us. The other view could be. Sod, new manager, honeymoon period, starting with a good win, tails are now up and the gap is just 7 points.
Id say the latter is true.
A very big (crucial?) Opportunity for us to put daylight between us and the top 3-4 clubs was missed yesterday. One result doesnt make the season, thats true. But i wonder if we could rue this result come the end of the season now.

f**king hell, sorry to learn that. Wish you every success in your battle back and hope you're once again attending games sometime soon. Remain strong and hopefully there should be a reward for all involved by end of season by way of a promotion out of this league.loudnproud wrote:despite missing the game due to having a bloody heart attack last saturday and only getting out of hospital on friday,I too could see many positives from the game.

We would imagine yesterdays setback was only a minor slip (and won't directly affect subsequent games) but I don't know. We will just have to wait for the next round of opposition to come and go and evaluate the situation then. We still remain in a strong position and think we'll at least have the play-offs by end of season so we have ourselves (once again) a good opportunity this year to achieve something, and rectify a few wrongs from years previous with it.

What baffles me is if our midfield is so poor, how the hell are we 1pt off the top of the league? I agree this loss has been pacified by the other results of those around us. We should bounce right back. There's too much belief in the squad this season for us to go backwards. The Derby game was probably just tired legs from the holiday schedule. As far as the scum are concerned, they won't do anything this season. They may spike a bit under the new manager, but ultimately they'll remain sh*t!

Re: Ipswich Town vs Derby County Match Preview
I dont get why we are surprised and concerned at all, did people honestly think we would not lose again ? Its two defeats in Tweny Two games people !!!! We lost yesterday not because we are going to hit a brick wall but because as I said before Tommy Smith cant defend a f*****g bouncing ball, he never has been able to and it was an error that cost us, added to that a bloody ref who got Two big decisions wrong, we did not get played off the park by Derby at all and they never looked like scoring really where as we had a few decent chances/openings.
I still believe we have a cracking chance of the top two, why shouldnt we, we are One point off top spot. Look back historically and the team that loses the least games over the season ALWAYS goes up, as it stands we have lost Four times and are the hardest side to beat in this division, Derby & Bournemouth have lost Five times, the up coming fixtures offer us a great chance of a decent haul of points and should we get them things will be looking really good. I am every bit as confident as I was before yesterdays game which by the way I did say we would lose !!!

Agree, the glass remains very much well over half full!
Abysmal refereeing apart, had TS not misjudged that one header then it would have been a classic 0-0, and we would be joint top. That said, my own take is that whilst we have MF options, some of whom have not been fully tested, MM will need to add extra quality to those who are honest grafters and have played a key role in getting us to where we are. The Derby MF boys were better than us on the day. Whether this can be done this season, or is part of ongoing work-in-progress, remains to be seen.
Similarly, we need additional striker cover. But there's absolutely no reason that if we continue doing exactly what's got us here, maintaining consistency over the remaining games, then we can definitely finish in the top two. Believe it and it can happen!

Re: Ipswich Town vs Derby County Match Preview
Yesterdays game was the clearest indication yet that we are not the same side when Cole Skuse doesnt play, I have changed my opinion on him in recent weeks, the job he does sitting just in front of the back Four and protecting them is really underrated, he cleans up so much loose ball and breaks up loads of attacks. his absence coincided with Hyam and Bishop not having very good games which was mostly down to the fact we had Four against Five in the middle of the park.
I believe our Midfield is fine and we have plenty of options in that department, without pinning blame Hyam didnt do great and tabby had his least efective game for some time, as did Bishop, but we must realise Derby probably have the best Midfield in the division and Will Hughes had a blinder while Hendrick, Eustace and Ibe all had decent games, for all oujr faults it was our midfield players, I.E. Bru, Tabb and Bishop who all had good efforts saved by Grant in the Derby goal. It was just not our day, as simple as that, no great mystery.

The thing that is so frustrating is that not long before we should have had the most clear cut penalty you will ever see for handball, cant believe he didnt give it and it changed the course of the game.
The game as a whole was decent enough but we have played much much better in recent weeks, particularly the midfield where for me we lost the battle today, of course they had the extra man in the middle throughout and for me Hyam & Bishop just didnt get into the game today, we surrendered possession far too often and there were far too many passes that went astray which was very uncharacteristic for us.
I still felt we had the lions share of the chances and their keeper was the busier but it certainly wasnt emphatic, had the early chance gone in we would have grew in confidence but Tabby couldnt beat the keeper. We have to remember we were playing a quality side and again there was nothing in it. Now is the time to see how we bounce back and I think we will be fine, we are still in a great position and very much all to play for.
I don't really follow your logic BB. Surely we'd be much better conceding 3 points to a bottom of the table team rather than gifting them to a team competing for promotion or even the play offs.

I'll take a stab at that logic......., losing to a much lower team could potentially dent the confidence of a few of them. I agree with that.
But you are correct Charnwood, from a points perspective......, defeating all the teams around ITFC would be preferable.

Well that result demonstrates very well the principle that it's okay to draw but one must avoid losing, especially to a side in the same area of the table. For sure I don't believe this loss is pivotal to our season and we have games coming up that should set up another little run. I worry about the illness in the camp currently and hope that we don't pick up any new injuries on Wednesday though. Looking forward to seeing an attacking team facing the saints and will be watching from Krakow!

You are quite right, Marko. I fully appreciate the points arguement, but I was coming at it from a psychological point of view and the damage (as you say) of losing to a team at the bottom, which we seem to have been quite good at in the past.marko69 wrote:I'll take a stab at that logic......., losing to a much lower team could potentially dent the confidence of a few of them. Re: Ipswich Town vs Derby County Match Preview
Whilst TS is probably the best header ofvthe ball at this club - certainly when attacking it in the opponents box. His judgement when defending a high ball into our box is baffling to say the least, as he ALWAYS allows the ball to bounce thereby giving the attacker an opportunity to nick it off him. Surely the defensive coaching staff can sort this out?

have to agree with this. I don't particularly like Skuse, but it cannot be denied that we miss the job he does when he does not play.bluemike wrote:Yesterdays game was the clearest indication yet that we are not the same side when Cole Skuse doesnt play, I have changed my opinion on him in recent weeks, the job he does sitting just in front of the back Four and protecting them is really underrated, he cleans up so much loose ball and breaks up loads of attacks. his absence coincided with Hyam and Bishop not having very good games which was mostly down to the fact we had Four against Five in the middle of the park.
