Doesnt get me excited for sure but then again neither did Noel Hunt, I would prefer varney to Richard Chaplow though even if they do play in different positions.

Re: Town favourites to sign Luke Varney
I'm with you that Varney isn't the man we need, but we must trust Mick. I would love to see McGoldrick back and fit very soon, and I'd also love to see Stewart fit as I think he could be a brilliant winger for town.
Let's stay positive town fans. Looking at the results recently, no one wants to claim the top two. It's going to be tight, there will be some ups and downs, buts nothing is won until may. I'm sure everyone will agree with me that we would be delighted if you'd told us we'd be sitting 4th come mid February last year! Out of all the managers in this tricky league we have the most experienced, wily and most respected. It may count. He hasnt been to the bloody World Cup finals for nothing! Shame Evans didn't give him any money, but who cares at the moment.... Let's all get behind this side. Imagine what a fit McGoldrick would add to it.

Re: Town favourites to sign Luke Varney
Whilst I don't think he brings any value to ITFC he's certainly still a legend in my neck of the woods where he used to play for the local village team and still owns a property here.
He was sold to Crewe Alexander for £50k in 2003 and the local club received a further £500,000 windfall when he was subsequently sold to Charlton.

Re: Town favourites to sign Luke Varney
I think I'd rather have Reg Varney. Can just about recognize the name but it's so obscure that without reference I wouldn't have been able to piece much else together.
Bottom line is, it could work as a loan deal as we're short on strikers right now and he could accommodate until the other players make a comeback but wouldn't want much else from it. And furthermore if we're the 'favorites' to sign him up, then who are the other interested parties ?
It read on his stats page that Varney once scored a wonder goal (causing a short lived media 'sensation') against some heavyweight opposition in a cup game for a lower league team. Big f**king deal. Incidents like that are a dime a dozen, and doesn't make him unique or special. Had another read through (his stats and accomplishments) and arrived at the conclusion, that this isn't really a player we need to investigate further.

What about this Crewe Alexander bloke that Charnwood speaks about? Might be worth looking at.

According to TWTD Town are expected to complete the loan signing of Blackburn striker Luke Varney in time to go into the squad facing Reading at Portman Road on Saturday.
Will this be another master stroke by MM, or a rare mistake?

Knowing the experience of MM, Id say we have a competent back up striker who will relish the chance of playing in a close knit and positive squad in with a chance of promotion. He appears to a player that puts himself about a bit in and around the opponents box.

No, but he had a great record of diving and winning penalties!

With reports saying Hunt could be out for rest of Season we need a decent Striker to come in and replace him.

Some reports I've seen suggest that he will miss the next 2 games but might be ready for Norwich.bluemike wrote:Having McGoldrick back performing would be handy, any chance ???

Re: Town favourites to sign Luke Varney
Obviously Varney has been brought in as cover for Noel Hunt.
Really difficult one to judge this as we were looking for somebody who in effect is going to be our 4th choice striker when McGoldrick is back to fitness. Therefore we would not want to spend much on wages and also find somebody who would be prepared to accept that role.
Although this signing doesn't exactly make me think wow, hopefully he can come in and do the job for us when required. Just a case of wait and see.

Re: Town favourites to sign Luke Varney
Quite literally, ANYTHING could happen. Nothing should surprise anyone anymore.
Take yesterday morning for example....... the apprentice had lifted a floor hatch in an office block before I got to the job. I told him to put out the "warning sign" for health & safety reasons.
Then some daft b*stard comes along and decided to trip over the fkn sign whilst texting and holding a Cafe Nero cup. Fkn as*hole.
Anything is possible.

Hmmmm, I'm reserving judgement. As well as inspiring talent in the likes of Bishop and Bru, there's also been Nouble and Salmon.
We shall see.

As with the other this doesn't offer much. I don't want to appear too critical of these kids and realize we're not going to be in for any continental superstars but feel McCarthy could have done better with this. Yes it's an interim replacement for Hunt above all else but not a name I would have brought in. He could be available for involvement in the play-off picture should we make it by end of season so can only hope his participation from here on will be supportive towards that endeavor.

Re: Town favourites to sign Luke Varney
I for one accept Micks judgement, he has done wonders for us, so give the lad a chance. If he comes in and scores he will be an instant hit. He works hard for the team and thats what we need, with the odd goal of course.

Re: Town favourites to sign Luke Varney
At this stage of the season all he has to do is get of the bench and score two match winning goals and he will have been worth plenty
It's all about the finishing line now.......
