That 2 clubs are going to set a new points record for missing out on a playoff place in the Championship.

Not sure what the current one is but usually 75 points tends to get you in. Certainly don't see that being the case this season. Could very well even come down to goal difference and even that is very tight between Brentford, Wolves and ourselves.

Think I shall just save myself the stress and give up following football until 2pm on the 2nd May and then just go online and look at the final table!

we have 1 goal more than Brentford and 4 more than Wolves ( who we still have to play,in a 6 pointer).

As someone on twtd has said if we havent secured enough points to put some daylight between us and Brentford / Wolves by the last 2-3 games we are going to be hard pushed to make play offs ,given the difference in opposition we all facd over those last couple of games. I think he may have a point, to coin a phrase!

If you go back to a few examples where we have just missed out on a top six place :

1995 - 96 : 69 points, final position 7th

2002 - 03 : 70 points, final position 7th

2013 - 14 : 68 points, final position 9th

and now if we look at where we find ourselves now :

2014 - 15 : hitherto 68 points, in position seven


surely at this moment in time we're better equipped to do ever better than those previous seasons. In other words, we're going to beat those other totals (with the amount of games still yet to play)

People have said it before, whatever occurs this season, even if we don't get a promotion or even finish in the top six, it's been the best season in years and poles apart from the sh*t we had to endure under the previous names that came in after Joe Royle. I think McCarthy will be doubtless aware and continue on in the summer and hopefully finish the job properly in a years time if we fail to make the play-offs again. Of course there's still ample time to achieve that top six place and there's some beatable opposition coming up, and other promotion candidates such as Derby and Watford will be feeling the pace and should drop points themselves along the way, creating opportunity.

If we win the required amount of games then goal difference matters not.

I'm not sure if I'm gonna be able to handle all this. It's all too close and going to become all too stressful.

In a way I kind of prefer the years we had nothing to compete for

I considered the same, albeit for a short time, but really, given the two options I'll take the position we find ourselves now.

Being in mid-table right now with your season effectively finished may be less stressful to it's respective support but we've seen far too much of that at Portman Road for as long as many will care to remember. We'll take what we've got now, give it a shot and see what's the finished product. Yes it does the health no favors but looking back at a younger age, take a moment to consider 1981 as a prime example when the club was fighting (at this stage of season) for not only the League Championship, but FA Cup and a European trophy. In retrospect we got it kind of easy.

1981 was a heartbreaking season, yes we won the Uefa Cup but in truth it masked the real pain of throwing away the league title to Aston Villa, a Villa side who we did the double over that season. We eventually finished 4 points behind them when it was still 2 points for a win in those days, we lost 9 times in the league that season and what many Town fans of today don't realise is that incredibly we lost 4 of the last 5 to somehow throw the title away, many think to this day it was purely down to squad size and the sheer volume of games we had to play that ultimately cost us, we played 42 league Games, 7 FA Cup games, 5 League Cup games and no less than 12 UEFA Cup games.

Remember that season so well. Was at both Villa matches; I think Eric Gates scored at their place. No doubt at all that we were ultimately undone by fighting on too many fronts, with a small squad, ultimately lacking sufficient strength in depth.

But, despite the league disappointment, it was such a magical time for the club and supporters. Some truly outstanding players, led by a legendary manager, supported by a Chairman whose type has long become extinct within the game. Have to say, that it's good to detect a little of that atmosphere and bond between club and supporters creeping back. Or is that just wishful thinking?!

We also beat them at Portman Road in the 3rd round of the FA Cup that season and I have always thought that if we had lost that game and not had the Cup run to the semi's then with the fixture reduction we would have gone on and won the league.
There were many great performances that season but for me the outstanding one was the away leg in the UEFA Cup at St Etienne when we won 4-1. They were one of the best sides in Europe at the time and had players of the calibre of Platini and Rep in their side and yet we destroyed them on their own patch.

It was a result that imo we never really got the credit for it deserved.

Definitely a heartbreaking season the 80/81 one. Defeating Villa 3 times, and virtually the same Villa side win the European Cup the next again season. That 80/81 title AND the '82 European Cup should've been Ipswich Towns ....... And 5 Stars above the badge.

AND they should've beaten Man City in the semi, AND Spurs in the final! 6 stars!

Ok , getting carried away a bit, but definitely a "could've been" era for the biggest club in East Anglia.

arguably the greatest away game for any Town supporter although obviously helps if you're of an age to properly recall it. They had gone unbeaten at their home venue for some 30 years at time of contest (or only lost one game) and (as mentioned) had good French players that included Michel Platini and other internationals and we went over and give them a beating that had most of Europe taking notice. In total we scored seven against them in two games which in retrospect was a fantastic achievement.
