jesus i cant believe that little st johns man would be only 63 now .he use to look an old man then.i'm 66 now so he would have been younger than me,i recokon he must be in his 70s barmey not 60s.
the thin blue line in the north stand bring back memories to.they were alot of good when the away fans use to sneek along the concourse at the back of the stand and charge right in the home supporters.also remember one good friday in the sixties playing agaist arsenal ,the ground was so full all us kids at the front of the stands were allowed to sit in front of the walls pitchside.sweeny also use have what i take was his wife and daughter walk around the pitch with him.also remember in the ramesy days churchmans use to be more vocal, standing in the north stand suddenley hearing "keep right on till the end of the road" of above the noise in the north stand verberating from the far end of the ground was great.
i think you answered all those who thought you we a norwich supporter JR with your memories of the town.no norwich supporter would have know about the 2 st johns men and the caterers even with the help of mr google.so hope the nastiness agaist you stop, dissagree with you by all means but not the sh*te that goes with it

Great reading all this about the olden days! Said this before, but I still find it fascinating that some of you were at the 38,010 game. Superb.

Re: Hey Rusher!
That game against Leeds and the 38,010 was the only time I have ever been crushed at a football match, it was actually quite scary at the time and getting out at the end was bloody carnage.

It was scary I agree. I waited until the mob had gone.

You know what, I'd just love for the young guns to experience some of the quality football we watched Town play in the Bobby Robson era, it was just unbelievable and we all took it for granted and expected it to continue ...

Re: Hey Rusher!
Only really experienced "light" crushing at the '91 League Cup Semi final,....., old Hampden, 40K Hibees bouncing, going nuts.
Suffered serious, "Hmmm, I think I'm going to die" moment at the '87 Donington Rock festival. The surge forward just prior to Metallica appearing onstage put me off Rock festivals forever. Sack that sh*t. Never even been to "T in the park" which was only 17 miles from ma hoose, prior to it moving.

The Sir Boab era was indeed very good to see (on TV) for me back in the day.
One of my uncles who attended Easter Road during the "famous five" days used to say me and my cousins, "You lot Dinnae know what good football is!" At the time, we used give it the

What was it 9 years out of 10 we qualified for Europe? Yea, who would believe it, 31 European games at Portman Road, 25 wins 6 draws and 0 defeats and we're still undefeated at home in Europe with wins notched up against AC Milan, Inter Milan, Lazio, Barcelona (twice) & Real Madrid to name but a few. 84 goals scored and only 12 conceded.

There weren't enough loos, so they just went up the back of the stand and peed there. dirty beggars
I think the game was delayed a good 20 mins while they got and electrician out that night.

I remember thousands of them in Town all day around the Town Hall area drunk as skunks but very happy and well behaved. Bobby Robson paid a great tribute to their fanatical support and even the Ipswich Police wrote to Celtic FC congratulating them on their good behaviour. I don't think Ipswich had ever seen anything like it either before or after. Maybe it was best we let them win 2-3.

Re: Hey Rusher!
Worked with a guy called Mick Tierney back in 96-98 on a contract, (sadly he's no longer with us) but he was at the Ipswich v Celtic match. Hired a mini-bus and 10 of them departed from Bonnybridge, Clackmannanshire to Portman Road. What I remember about old Mick was that he couldn't say "Ipswich".......,
he said, "I remember the trip to Iswich."
Where Mick?
"Iswich? Iswich Town, Johhny Wark played for them?"
OH THAT Iswich!

Re: Hey Rusher!
I always remember the two young Scots Brazil and Wark in that game. Brazil was dancing a jig in front of the Celtic fans obviously made up with the occassion. By stark contrast Wark looked I'll at ease for some reason and tended to keep away from the visiting fans. I I occurred to me many years later that Wark probably was Catholic and the song the Celts were signing that night had secerarian overtures ( not that I was aware as a kid at the time).
Still a brilliant night I won't ever forget .

Re: Hey Rusher!
That first Celtic player in the picture there, Roy Aitken. Now Iswich Town could really use a "Roy Aitken" right now. Thread a ball through the eye of a needle. And took no sh*t.
Well, the 2nd player in the picture........ The first is the wee man, Gordon Strachan!

Re: Hey Rusher!
The teams on the day;
Ipswich:
Cooper Mills McCall Thissjen Hunter Butcher Wark Muhren Mariner Brazil Gates Subs: Osman Steggles Parkin Westwood D'Avray Burley
Scorers: Gates 3 Wark 41
Celtic:
Bonner Moyes Reid Aitken McAdam MacLeod Provan Sullivan McCluskey (McGarvey) Burns Nicholas Subs: Latchford Halpin Conroy
Scorers: McCluskey 38 Nicholas 87 McGarvey 88
Attendance: 15,267

Index linked that ticket price would be approx £6 today, and that was to watch pretty much the same team that won the UEFA cup.

Re: Hey Rusher!
No thrills Alan Hunter. Terrific defender.
Lost count on how many times he cleared the stands by kicking the ball over. "Can't score whilst looking for the ball can they?" He once told me and few other friends in the legends bar few years ago whilst talking about the good times
Can anybody remember few years ago Rangers came to PR for pre season game? Ipswich gave them the entire Green King Stand to which they nearly filled. Similar crowed to the Celtic game. 15k or so but i heard Rangers caused lots of trouble around Suffolk. Not sure if that is true or not though

Remember that game yes. They certainly got the "Churchmans" rocking that's for sure. I can't say I recall any trouble though which doesn't mean it didn't happen.

I had a similar experience when Motorhead came on - the year Ozzy headlined and Bad News played - Maybe 84/85?? Great daymarko69 wrote:Only really experienced "light" crushing at the '91 League Cup Semi final,....., old Hampden, 40K Hibees bouncing, going nuts.

That was actually 86, Nics. I went abroad on holiday that year and wasn't there. But attended in 85 when ZZ Top headlined, (but was there to see special guests Marillion) and the 87 festival. Metallica were there in 85 as well as 87, but the crowd were dangerously more mad two years later in 87!
I think maybe it's because they followed Anthrax in 87 and the crowd were amped up. Still the scariest crowd moment in my life.

Yip, well I could certainly believe that. They leave a trail of destruction everywhere they go. They leave several K's damage at Easter Road every time they visit. Effin tw@ts.Steve and Jo wrote:i heard Rangers caused lots of trouble around Suffolk. Not sure if that is true or not though

SIX FOOT TWO,
ALAN HUNTER'S AFTER YOU!"
We played amazing football back then! The way Thijssen and Muhren controlled the midfield, Beattie's streaming runs from the back using his head like a hammer on the ball, Mariner out-muscling most defenders and slamming the ball in the back of the net! There was so much cohesion in the team. It was NOT tippy-tappy football by any means; it was stong, powerful, counter-attacking, possession based football. Those were the days!!

What is the status of JR?
Sorry, but JR has got a serious bit of nasty responses from some. Like being called 'scum'.
He maybe a bit of a fed up old Town supporter who likes to poke this (sometimes clique- ey, comfort-zone supported) forum OR he could be a NCFC supporter.
If he is aNCFC supporter in disguise ... then well done. You've got me thinking you're ITFC if that what gets you going.
On the other hand, why are grumpy old fuckers like JR treated like they don't have a say if they don't fit in to the cosy group?
