Well Barmy, I stand in the SBR lower, and when they sing the songs , everyone joins in, so yes I would. And next season Mike will also be singing the songs as he's "coming home" to the North Stand!

The only songs I won't sing are regarding someone dying, never have and never will, I hate them yes but not that far.

Quite right not to judge people billy BUT i. think anyone who openly sings songs wishing someone dead just because they are from our local rivals is pathetic. Its just a game ffs and i hate when i hear our fans sing it, embarrasing. Dont even like the whore bit either.

Don't believe there was any (real) malice intended, merely some adolescent choice of words. It's when you read things about wishing an opposition player a broken leg or other serious injury, that goes beyond the pale.

Furthermore Smith isn't a whore. She has been - and is - a successful businesswoman who's achieved more in one life than anyone reading this (discussion) could ever hope to aspire to. It's only because of her direct involvement with another club side that she becomes a target for abuse or ridicule. As a standalone individual, I got no animosity towards her, and recognize her life's achievements regardless of association.

I take it you have not stood next to a group of idiots singing this song saint jude? Believe me, they are not adolescents, they are grown people who should know better but dont, thick as pig s**t.
Furthermore as you rightly say she is not a whore so why say such things to a person in such a public way. Would any of these individuals walk up to delia in a resturant and either tell her to die or call her a whore??? I bet not. Ok we get it, you dont like norwich, but grow up and dont be so personal in such a disgusting manner.

I think people are getting a bit precious about football chants here. It has happened at football grounds up and down the Country for as long as I can remember. People WILL join in . That's is the very nature of "Crowd " behaviour. You will never change it and it is part of football. The Norwich fans made a song up about the 5 girls (protitutes) that were murdered. It happens.

Well make the chants funny then.... death and whore comments aside, it's pretty crap.

So many avenues to pursue other than death or whoredom.... 'Let's be aving you' , lack of real trophies, dellias pies, Alan Partridge, Ricky van wankswinkel, etc...... get witty before you open your mouths.

suggest you stand in the SBR stand and have a go yourself then if you feel that strongly about it. However the odd songs over the years that gave been sung , often are witty and funny. Its not all doom and gloom, but I think if you try and stop a whole stand singing core songs that you don't agree with I think you will be disappointed in your attempts.

Is this what being an Ipswich fan has come to?....concern about hurting the feelings of scum fans? Dear, oh dear. I'm sure the ITFC supporters who've been kicked and punched by scummers could care less if a chant sounds offensive.

It's each to their own, I have no issue with what anyone chooses to sing, I just can't bring myself to bring death to someone into a football song but that's just me and trust me no-one hates Norwich more than me.

As I said, I don't believe there's any real malice from our support regards wanting Smith no longer existent, (she's a harmless 70 year old grandmother from what I could ascertain), it's simply because she's a leading figure with an opposition team that are our main rivals and accept there's a long standing enmity with some sections of the support towards each club side.

It you look at from another perspective i.e. Millwall "supporters" celebrating the death of two Leeds fan killed in Turkey, opponents of Manchester United finding humor in the Munich airplane disaster, or even those outside of Glasgow Rangers finding ridicule in the Ibrox stadium tragedy, then what we may offer seems tame in comparison.

Wasn't it Cobbold himself that once said "we don't do much singing here at Ipswich Town" ? Seems times have changed, but trying to put into context what some may deem offensive, or those that find little to worry over.

SJ Town fans aren't as innocent as you would like to think, I was disgusted when travelling up to Norwich for last seasons play off game to hear dozens of twon fans singing a song celebrating the suicide of Justin Fashanu, it is vile in the extreme, Foxy will verify it because she was there with me, mocking a young man who was so troubled he hung himself is hardly something to gloat about no matter who he plays for, what his gender is or whatever his skin colour, these twats saw fit to take the p*ss.

Have there ever been people in the sport that have had a direct negative impact on ITFC? A direct impact?

Wallace Mercer, Jambofker owner, who in the 80's attempted to take over Hibs? It was widely broadcast as a "merger", but it was later revealed it was a "take over" and then "dissolve" Hibernian FC. We (the fans) had the very successful "Hands off Hibs" Campaign in 1989 and saved our club.

Mercer is now dead. Hibs fans (when the team is playing the cnuts) will sing, "Wallace Mercer, six feet under" whilst doing the hands up, then hands down gesture is something I take great f**king pleasure joining in with. A deceitful, extremely horrible man.

And it must be added, that song starts on the back of one of their (changed words) sectarian songs........, we never start the Mercer song on a whim.

How about showcasing a few of the funny songs you've heard over the years in the stand that you mention.

Can't say I'm blown over by the Delia one, but, who knows.... maybe sung in unison with a strong baritone section it might make the hairs stand up on the back of the neck.

Be good to hear some classics from the past ... It's a long pre-season.

I'm seriously interested.... how do chants start? Do blokes get together down the pub and scribble out lyrics over a few beers? Do they practice during the week in their bedrooms or sheds? Do they share lyrics online? I love the idea of some hairy, beery blokes getting all starry-eyed and diva-like wanting to be lead or getting frustrated not just nailing that high note.

Much as I'd like to believe that chants are spontaneous and others core chanters pick up the chant straight away there's got to be some underground chant group.

You need to go watch some Billy Connolly speaking about fan chants and how they start.

I have heard some awful songs in fairness from town fans. I think the Delia one has become so common that many sing it with no thought about what the words actually are, im sure fans wouldn't really want her dead (I would like to think not anyway!)

For me the worst I heard was when Glenn Roeder was in charge and some of the fans started singing "whats the growing out of your head..." im sure you can figure out the rest. To mock somebody who was/had been fighting against cancer is not just crossing the line, its just plain sick.

I have been to Carrow road the last 6 or 7 times we have played there, you always get some numpties who never go to another away game just thinking its going to be a fight, I think many of the proper town fans get as annoyed with them as anyone else. Last time I was there the kid next to me was abusing the steward and all the bloke was trying to was help, it was good to see other town fans put our fan in his place though and apologize to the steward

Good plan!

Pretty sure there exist any number of learned dissertations in university libraries, providing astute insights into the origins of soccer chants. They examine in detail the socio-econmic backgrounds, ethinity and sexual orienation of chanters across the spectrum. However, they all arrive at the same conclusions: they're normally started by a fat bloke with ginger hair!

That's a weird one!

However, I feel giving all the credit to Celtic fans is wholly unfair, Herford.

Tbh fans are often suggesting chants / songs on twtd, especially when you get a new "hero" in the team. But there are a few favourties which the Town faithful will often sing which are not in anyway distasteful, "Follow, Follow, follow," "Spirit in the Sky" , "Mickma , Mickma" which was hilarious when 200 Town fans were singing it with the hand movements ( not rude), and were dancing around 4-5 police who came into the London pub to check there was no problem, (which there wasnt). I think the bad songs are solely aimed at norwich
(unsurprisingly ). The problem is the witty songs tend to be very spontanious and in relation to what has/ is happening in the game at the time, and its hard to recall them now, But the NS over he years are usually quite sharp when it comes to voicing their opinion about something. It makes you laugh at the time, but out of context mean nothing.

I think in general, a high percentage of fan chants are harmless and very humorous. It's only at certain fixtures that they can become a bit more "to the bone". But opinion alert here; if anyone is offended by ANY fan chant, I'd suggest staying away from football grounds.

Seem to recall when I was last watching Town at Blackpool and we were being resoundingly spanked we all lost interest in the game and got very excited indeed about the antics of the Gulls flying about.

Probably got a little confusing for the oppos fans when large swathes of Town fans started chanting 'Seagulllllllll, Seagulllllllll' for minutes on end.

Sometimes you have to make your own entertainment!
