Murphy to Newcastle or anywhere else for that matter, not going to happen, and Marko it would be a massive loss, massive.

Would not be prepared to be so categorical; but agree his departure would be potentially disastrous. Best, or anyone similar, could not give us what Murphy does - and not just in terms of goals. His performance last week, where he led the line with power, skill and strength, might just have persuaded Newcastle to make a move.
No further news on Best btw.

Re: Rumours Thread.
If all that lot is true I just don't see them even needing Murphy what with the strikers they already have.Newcastle have been heavily linked with 22 year-old Utrecht striker Sebastien Haller over the last couple of weeks and he could be arriving soon.
Moroccan International Lazaar could be the first through the door with news yesterday that he has agreed a five year deal at just £3M and there were some reports last night he is on his way to Newcastle for a medical.
That follows a meeting in Newcastle yesterday between Managing Director Lee Charnley and Lazaar’s agent.
The full-back is in the final year of his contract at Palermo and will leave the club this summer.
Newcastle have also been linked with Chelsea striker Christian Atsu for a couple of days now, with those rumors intensifying and Rafa wants the winger on loan for the season with an option to buy.
The Ghanaian International was the Player of the Tournament and scored the Goal of the Tournament in the 2015 African Cup of Nations and he looks a good player.
The 6ft 2ins Utrecht striker Sebastien Haller has played for all of the French Youth sides including 14 appearances for the U-21 side with 9 goals and there was news yesterday that Newcastle may have bid £6M for the young French striker, but it was turned down.
If that’s true we would expect Newcastle to increase the bid and there was news earlier in the week that Rafa had talked personally with the Frenchman about joining Newcastle.
Negotiations are also said to be ongoing with Brentford midfielder Alan Judge but it’s not clear if Newcastle want to sign the 27 year-old now or wait until the double fracture of his right leg is fully healed.
Brentford manager Dean Smith thinks Judge will still be at Brentford come September but Newcastle could sign a pre-contract agreement now and sign him in January – that’s always a possibility.

Declined being the crucial word there, although I am sceptical there is even anything in it.

Re: Rumours Thread.
As I said to you, there is no quotes in that story (if you can call it that) from either side whatosever, just a headline the paper has picked up on elsewhere. I am afraid you are going to have to put up with him for a bit longer yet.
If by some miracle I was wrong and he were to go you can forget about our chances this season, first off who we could afford to bring in would not come close to giving us what Murphy does, we already know any money we may get from any sale would not be reinvested in the team, maybe a few hundred grand like we paid for Ward but for a top striker that wouldn't buy his boots.

Listening to Ian Milne, on S Radio, would say it's far more likely than not that DM is gone. Big bucks for a 33 year old - deal too rich for the Club not to accept.
Very concerned to hear him trot out the standard, 'any funds received will be reinvested'. Like for like by COP Wednesday?
Team announced in around an hours time - will give further insight!

Re: Rumours Thread.
This now looks very likely to happen. £3.5 - 4 million for 33 yr old is good business, it is a shock tho' and will only be good business if we get in the right replacement(s).
Ian Milne has said it will be a busy few days - no days off for MM!

Re: Rumours Thread.
Murphy has been invaluable to ITFC, particularly since he has been played in the correct position. Part of me thinks that if the rumours are true and the price correct we would be wise to cash in. However, as has been said, the money won't be reinvested in the team and what could we buy if it were?
A sad day if he goes.

Everyone must have mixed feelings regarding this. Great for the dough being offered, but not so great if he's going to be a massive loss.

Re: Rumours Thread.
One of their leading fan sites have confirmed the sale and acquisition of player and but an agreed price (as yet) hasn't been put forward. Apparently as cover for one of their players but if as suggested we can take 3 - 4 million for the player then f*ck it, it's a good sum for a player that's in his early 30's and hasn't been able to replicate anything like his previous stature.
Good enough, it's a shame to see his departure, really made a name for himself here and had that tremendous season, but players move on, it's the reality of this business, and wish his well at his new employers.

Unlucky Jags today, Ash? Those Jambo bstds!
With him being regarded as a "massive loss", I'm going to guess that Mike will prefer he stays.

The question is why did Murphy hand in a transfer request. He was sways first name on team sheet.

I think when he heard Newcastle were going to pay him big money, he wanted to make sure Town didn't stand in his way ( as they have done to others).hallamblue wrote:The question is why did Murphy hand in a transfer request. He was sways first name on team sheet.

You can't blame the guy at his age going for the last big pay day, he has been very loyal to us over the years and proved by coming here on loan Three times that he genuinely wanted to be here.

Re: Rumours Thread.
I'm guessing this has been bubbling away in the background for a few days which is why we've been linked with Leon Best & Adam Johnson etc without us understanding the bigger picture.
I suspect the money from Murphy's sale will get banked and we'll look for a replacement with a rest of season loan deal which is probably better than blowing £3m away in 3 days with a panic buy. Unless of course his replacement is already lined up.
All will be revealed in the next few days.

Re: Rumours Thread.
I have nothing but gratitude for Murphy's efforts and loyalty since he's been at this Club.
Final big pay day and likely just a squad member who will play just a few times ( at his age might be preferable), but do you know what?
GOOD LUCK MURPH
...and thanks big man. You're a rare breed in the modern game now. The sadness us Toon fans won't actually appreciate what they have now acquired.

Re: Rumours Thread.
As Benitez has said Murphy will add to his options up front as the Magpies look to return to the Premier League at their first attempt. I think his actual words were along the lines...."We have good strikers, so to have another one with good experience will give us competition if everything is fine."
He may well get a few starts early on whilst Gayle and Mitrovic recover from injuries, but once these two get back to full fitness I suspect Murphy will spend the rest of the season sitting on the bench providing cover. This just highlights the vast difference in this league between an established Championship side v one just relegated from the Premier League.
Anyway the deals been done and life moves on.

Re: Rumours Thread.
It's a shame we couldn't have put the Murphy £3m towards the £8m Derby have just paid for Watfords 24yr old Czech striker Matej Vydra, now that would have been a good replacement.

Don't be fooled by one game, Murphy had a few cack games but we'll still miss him.
Derby have made a few poor signings but I don't expect Vydra to be another of these, what Derbys owners show is real intent and that's been missing at Portman Road for sometime.

Re: Rumours Thread.
Can be a win-win for all, if we do get in some new blood who can take us forward.
Murphys 33 .... that's the key. Newcastle just want him for one season to help get them out of the Championship and so are not looking beyond that.
We, on the other hand, will have a 34 year old striker in a years time with far less sell on value ( if any) and we'll still be in the Championship ( very likely). And players of this age tend to go downhill very quickly and offer nothing to the future. Good deal for us if Evans, Milne and McCarthy can bring in younger replacement/s. It's up to them.... and I'm looking to them to do this properly on Towns behalf and the future. We could yet see in the next few days what commitment or ambition Evans has for us.
Would not like to see panic buys, mercenaries, unwanted freebies ... but some astute dealing with an eye to the future. Grant Ward has been an example of money well spent so far this season.
Good luck to Murphy..... he's earnt his 'last big deal' and been a good servant right to the end. No toys thrown out of prams and it was done very efficiently with no weeks of rumours and discontent. Up to our owners / management now to make this a good deal.
