Will be a big loss but depending on who we get in to replace him we may just overcome this, failure to bring in anyone and it is goodnight vienna for this season again.

I don't think doing nothing is an option tho it may just have to be a loan deal given the tight timescales between now and the transfer deadline. I'd rather that than see the money wasted with a panic buy.

Well I must admit, I have fully underestimated how much Daryl Murphy meant to ITFC and the fans. For you Bluemike, (a regular at home and away games) to say it's "goodnight Vienna" for the SEASON if no one suitable arrives, (after only a handful of games) speaks volumes through a megaphone.

Can only liken it to some Hibs fans saying Jason Cummings wouldn't be missed, which is absolute bullshit.

If you read this forum, good luck to you Daryl, and I hope Rafa gives you get plenty of game time. All the best.

I do think that Marko, we have to bring a similar type of big target man in, our style of play demands it. yes we are trying to adapt the way we play and there are early signs we can do so, however things are not going to change overnight and we are still regarded as predominantly a direct, physical team, Brett pitman is a very good striker but not what I would call a target man who wins all the flick ons, leads the line, holds the ball up etc etc, he is vastly different, probably has a much better football brain than Murphy, sears is the smaller type of striker who feeds off the likes of Murphy and wouldn't win a ball in the air if he was on the pitch alone. If we are going to use Smith & Berra as our CB partnership from time to time they can do nothing else but hoof the bloody thing and it will be eaten up by opposing CB's all day long, we simply have to bring in a big, strong Murphy type striker, failure to do so and we will struggle. It is now all the Murphy doubters over the last few years will see exactly what he brought to the team and just how bloody hard he worked every game.

Saturday brought confirmation that Newcastle United had reached agreement with Ipswich Town for the transfer of Daryl Murphy.

It was Sky Sports who broke the story about the deal for the 33 year old forward, further confirming that they are back working closely with Newcastle United, being fed the exclusives such as breaking transfers.

On Sunday morning, Newcastle United officially confirmed that Murphy was now a Newcastle player but as usual it was with ‘transfer fee undisclosed’.

However, Sky Sports have now revealed the finances of the deal.

Sky’s man in the north east Keith Downie announcing that the deal has cost Newcastle £3m up front, with a further £1m payable to Ipswich if Newcastle win promotion.

The reaction of Ipswich fans when news broke yesterday appeared to be wishing the player well and thanking him for what he’s done for the club – but also saying that the speculated transfer fee figures meant maybe a decent deal for Ipswich, when it is a player who turns 34 this season.

If Newcastle do go up then there won’t be any complaints from the Newcastle end, though with promotion it would then be very unlikely that we’d see Daryl Murphy complete his two year contract…

Rafa Benitez revealed on Friday 26 August that a forward was arriving…:

“But he (Adam Armstrong) knows that we’ll sign an experienced striker and has been in contact with some clubs that can maybe take him on loan.

The Newcastle boss had already shown that strict age constraints are a thing of the past with 31 year old Jesuz Gamez arriving on a two year deal, so on age alone you couldn’t rule out Rafa thinking about 33 year old Daryl Murphy.

Able to play on both the wing and through the middle, Murphy’s versatility would also be an asset, plus the absence of Gayle and Mitrovic for Brighton has pointed to the lack of striking options, with not many fans seeing Ayoze Perez as an out and out forward.

Brought over from Waterford United, Daryl Murphy had limited success in his four years on Wearside, although 10 of his 15 Sunderland goals came in the 2006/07 Championship season for them.

After a disappointing few years at Celtic, the striker/winger has really came into his own at Ipswich Town, over the course of these past three seasons Daryl Murphy has scored 50 goals (27 in 2014/15) in 117 Championship starts (+8 as sub).

Daryl Murphy has also benefitted on the international scene due to his Championship form, the Ipswich player playing against both France and Italy for Ireland at this summer’s Euros.
Very good business, 3 Million with another Million to come if Newcastle are promoted.

I thought Murphy didn't want to leave Ipswich because his family was settled in Suffolk? Good luck to him; he did a lot for us. I'm not sure what Benitez sees in Murphy now to be honest, although I'm sure I'll be proven wrong. What this transfer does say to me is that Murphy doesn't have a lot of faith in ME/MM providing him a late career return to the Prem. That's ok...no worries we understand. It'll be interesting to see if MM is able to find a Murphy like fit for the current style of play. There was evidence of MM attempting to play the ball on the ground during pre-season...so maybe DM's departure will be another step in that direction?

It seems Mrs Murphy and the kids have returned to Ireland/Eyre ( not sure which side of the border). Flights to Emerald Isle from Newcastle are a lot easier than from East Anglia.

Murphy cut it at the Euros and, let's face it', going for his last chance in the big time. Can't really blame him? Bottom line is who Town bring in as a replacement?

Bad decision or not it's a done deal so we have to move on.

Bringing in nobody isn't an option, and the somebody has to be at least as good if not better.....
......that's if we're serious about getting out of this league.

Over to you ME & MM

There's a kid at Wigan name of Billy Grigg who was the League One top scorer last season and has fifty goals in two seasons for both there and Milton Keynes while part of a loan deal. Wouldn't hurt to make enquiries and could be a worthwhile addition to the squad.

Sharp of Sheffield United is another that could be considered and has become recognized over time and no harm in putting a few names out.

I take it this is Will Grigg, AylesburyBlue mentioned him to me a few days ago as being a really good target who scores lots of goals, can't say I know an awful lot of him although the name is familiar.

Sharp is a washed up has been now unfortunately and nothing like the type of player Murphy was.
