I say congratulations. One of my favourite strikers of all time. Hard as nails and clinical. And thankfully a decent pundit. Anything to get rid of Hansen. Well done.

Is it April 1st ?

Have I missed something?

Surely Alan Shearer and Jackie Milburn are the top two players to ever play for Newcastle United and both now have a statue.

I'm not saying he wasn't a decent player but a statue? Does he really fit next to Sir Bobby and Jackie Milburn? After all, he didn't help them win anything.

With all due respect, and with regards to Newcastle United only, he's more deserving of a statue than Sir Bobby.

To be honest, with 112 goals from 138 appearances and a league title @ Blackburn, I'd be wanting a statue there also.

Agree Marco,Plus turning down the chance of major trophy's at Fergusons Manure when moving from Blackburn to his homeland instead of United. that's a Legend in my book.

To be honest Alan Shearer did far more for Newcastle United than Sir Bobby who never played for them and only managed there for 5 years winning nothing.

I think his statue reflected his Geordie heritage and his lifetime contribution to football and of course the mutual love he and the Newcastle fans had for one another, he was of course one of their own.

He was a great finisher, especially when he played for Blackburn.

Opinions differ clearly!
I like our statues of Robson and Ramsey.
Both men 'started' at Ipswich and achieved things that changed our club for ever.
I just don't see Shearer in that same bracket but if others do, that's fine by me.

That's a fact I did not know, Wolfie. Give the man all the statues he wants.

I do agree tho that statues and legend status is to easy these days....Robson and Ramsey. both true gents and also great human beings.

Depends how you view Shearer as a Newcastle 'legend'. Ok, good player, celebrated center forward, but won zero honors in his time there, and in a later managerial capacity, saw the team suffer a relegation (?)

What they do is their business, but looking at Tyneside legends you'd include first and foremost Milburn, then maybe Gallagher and Keegan.

With due respect it takes a team to win honours, trophies. Alan though did everything but. His goal scoring record says it all. He achieved everything has a individual..

I would honour him. Tops scorer in premiership history. What more can anybody ask of ONE player? Best ever in the Premiership

Well here's a list of 60 or so statues relating to football players and managers; https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of ... ll_statues

In my opinion Alan Shearer is fully deserving to be included in this list.

More important is that the fans of Newcastle United are comfortable that he is worthy of such an honour and such recognition. I've certainly not read of any criticism from the Geordie fans who I'm sure would be the first to complain if they thought this was inappropriate.

Most people would invariably associate statues awarded to individuals for honor or achievement, what they did with the above was questionable. Zidane was a player of immense potential and one of the world's finest for a time, but to award a sculpture over some regrettable incident that provided the player ultimate shame and resentment ? Furthermore we know the opposing figure is Materazzi, but at first glance it resembled more Steve McQueen.

Worth noting that some 90 per cent of statues to honor playing individuals (in the UK) didn't come into effect until after 1990 at the earliest, so while a recent introduction too many, there have been instances where decisions were made that were absurd in the extreme. (Michael Jackson at Fulham : now removed by all accounts, but what the f*ck was it doing there to begin with ?)

On a final note, there was some level of humor to be found over at the Pink 'Un forum, where a collection of rival fans were in debate over who would be a suitable choice for honor outside Carrow Road stadium. Names suggested included Darren Huckerby, Grant Holt and the obligatory Goss vote. Bruce got a mention for that goal against us, but only Bryan Gunn would seem a suitable candidate. (Very loyal servant and battled some personal issues and losses outside of the game)

One supporter went as far to mention : 'I hope we don't put up a statue of any player unless when we have won the champions league or the like'

At that stage, any hope of sensible discussion degenerated into absurdities and the issue was complete.
