Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew has lifted the lid on fan favourite Jonny Williams' future at the club, after the midfielder was sent to Ipswich Town again on loan.

The 22-year-old has not been able to prove himself to the manager in the last 20 months, while he had previously suffered a spate of injuries which have hampered his progression.

Williams regained fitness and has spent time on loan with the Tractor Boys, Milton Keynes Dons and Nottingham Forest.


This summer, he went to Euro 2016 with Wales and did well out in France, with many Palace fans believing he would finally make the breakthrough under Pardew.

But, after cutting short his holidays to return to pre-season, he was on the end of crude challenge away at Farnborough at the start of August – which has ruled him out action up until now.

And Pardew has revealed it has crossed his mind if Williams would be better off at another club.

"Jonny and I just can't seem to come together. In pre-season he's fit and then gets injured again. It was a terrible tackle at Farnborough," said the boss, in an exclusive interview with the local press.

"We were at deadline day last month and I'm looking at my numbers and thinking I can't see Jonny getting a game.

"Really and truly, with the amount of time he's got, I can't keep him here and have him as a substitute.


"I know our fans love him, and again, he may have influenced the game at certain points as a sub more than others or he might have got himself up to speed. He might have.

"The more chance I've got is to send him to Ipswich with the same clause as Sullay Kaikai, to have a look. They are two players who, potentially, could boost our season.

"We have almost had a discussion in that does Jonny need a new environment? Does he need a new start? It just seems to not be working here.


"Sometimes luck plays a part. I don't think I've seen him play three continuous games since I've been here, so it's almost impossible for me to really think this time he should have stayed.

"We were on that last day of the window and I said to Jonny I think he should just go and play.

"In the end, I think he was almost resigned to that. We left it as long as we could to get him up to speed but we just couldn't get the game time into him."

Looks like this one could well become a permanent move but for me he is just another McGoldrick, bags of ability but never fit enough to play more than a couple of games in a row, and will demand high wages.

I agree. His style of play unfortunately invites fouls, and he doesn't seem to be able to roll with them.

I've said exactly the same thing on TWTD. Interesting thst they have finally decided to offload.

He is not a player I would want to take a chance on.

Only thing i would say possibly is his injuries been in the main very bad tackles. One at Ipswich on the side line and this one in pre season. Very bad tackles that would injure most players..

Maybe just maybe this time who knows. Fingers crossed because he has the talent, maybe lady luck may turn for him.. David is different issue. Muscular and strains. And hes in his late twenties.

Lets hope this maybe could be Jonny's season

Not sure if Pardews words were meant to be a carrot to offload Williams on a permanent basis to someone ( ie us) but it just sounded like he was a massive liability injury-wise. Think he bombed big time on that. Maybe the fresh Suffolk air will strengthen his feeble joints and bones, but he's got McGoldrick syndrome ( talented player who will tease the fans with a bit of quality and then be injured for 8 months).
I don't blame that type of player unless they show no desire to get or stay fit.... it's up to the management to bring in players who are tough enough to endure this league. I was never excited about Williams re-signing due to his fitness history anyway and will wait and see. Think he'll be one of those who showed a lot of promise and will just disappear due to never being fit. Hope to proven wrong because he has something special.

Love Johnny Williams to bits and when hes fit hes awesome......but the word is "fit".......can we afford to take the risk? do we need to take that risk....I just don't know right now.
