Enterprising line up, just wish Kenlock was still in. A fair few Town fans made the trip and thankfully the thick fog has cleared. COYB'S

Against run of play, Pitman makes it 2-2. Hopefully restore some confidence!

Pitman misses good chance for 3-2! Looks like Ward coming on, presumably for Sears.

Could be a good finish. Both teams need a win. Chambo sounds like he's having a tough time.

Bloody hell do we ever do it easy !! Started so well but after 20 minutes we were poor, we didn't give up though and got the result. Great cross from Ward for the winner, I've been critical lately but what a ball. Chambers oh dear! Long journey home now but a happy one.
And Marko !!!! C'mom the Loons !!!!!!

From what you saw today do you think this could be a turning point in the season or just a case of papering over the cracks?

Re: Wigan Athletic v Ipswich Town preview and matchday thread
Shed, if we can replicate the opening 25 minutes it could well be a turning point, unfortunately what followed says otherwise, however we never gave up when heads could have dropped. Some of our movement in that opening period was very good and we were causing them big problems, had Lawrence taken the gift of a chance to make it 2-0 it would have been a stroll. If we follow this win up with another on Boxing day then confidence will grow. There are still issues to resolve however.

Not sure. We beat a poor side and we could have lost, drawn or won. There is nothing conclusive for the next game other than our back six in terms of players. Absolute great to get a late winner.... most likely papered over cracks . Fabulous result Town. Just what we needed. A bit stuttery but typical of a team trying to get back on track when confidence is low.
Safe and quick journey home Mike.

Celebrate the 3 points - gained after what sounded like we'd imploded following the equaliser. But great credit for hanging in there, and MM's canny use of subs which probably won us the game. Hopefully will give much needed boost to confidence to take into the Fulham game. Doubt if Chambo will have a more torrid time all season!
If Wigan do get relegated, MM could do a lot worse than try to bring in Wildschut - outstanding player on the pitch!

Re: Wigan Athletic v Ipswich Town preview and matchday thread
I have to say it was one of the strangest games I've ever seen. Undeserved win that's for sure. A bit of robbery comparable with 1-0 away win at Huddersfield last season.
Tuesday match at Birmingham and the manner in which we lost against average opposition hadn't set me up positively prior to Wigan. I was dead certain that McCarthy was gonna go with the same painful team selection. Very nice surprise though 45 minutes before the game when I saw our line-up. Perhaps the most attacking one for a long while. One obvious displeasure was McCarthy's decision to bring back Knudsen into the team as Kenlock had done everything fine at Birmingham to retain his place.
First 15-20 minutes the game could have been over and I thought we were gonna destroy them today. They couldn't get out of their half. Lawrence and Williams injected much required energy and movement into our usually dead midfield.
We scored from the very soft penalty to say the least. Wigan players and crowd visibly angered by refs decision and probably understandably so. However we needed some help from ref too as we had had disallowed goals earlier on this season too.
Soon after Pitman's penalty Lawrence squandered perfect opportunity to enhance our lead as Jaaskelainen won one on one battle.
From 25 min onwards we started fading gradually and allowing Wigan to come back to the game. Two free-kicks which resulted in the equaliser, yes perhaps a bit harsh to penalise Sears on high boot but everything did begin with Chambers giving the ball away. Bialkowski made a splendid save but he had no chance to prevent Wildschut's follow-up.
As ever any big or litlle set-back and our heads drop. Since Wigan scored they were all over us and Bialkowski was a bit busy. We could have scored against run of play though as Williams' shot from 12-14 yards bounced off inside the post. The ball looked as if it was going into the net.
Second half was played out in the difficult conditions due to the fog and we hardly came out. It was all Wigan for the majority of it and at times we made them look like Barcelona. We were abject. Totally hopeless. Struggled to make two passes and it was ourselves now who couldn't get out of their half.
Chambers has had a nightmare against Wildschut. I dare say it was his worst Town performance ever. Mercilessly embarrassed by Wildschut a few times, getting skinned so easily. But this is what happens when you play central back as a full-back. No wonder that Wigan's second goal came from Chambers' zone. This was the least Wigan deserved for their dominance. In fact 3-1 would have been more adequate to the situation at that time. Growing anger and unrest among Town fans as several of them uttered that by singing anti-McCarthy's songs.
Restless and speechless. How on earth we allow poor Wigan team to dominate us !
Chambers was continually tormented by Wildschut. A couple of hot moments in our box but with fog getting thicker it was actually hard to see what was going on from our end. Wigan still dominated and outstretched our defence.
Out of nowhere, totally against run of play we equalised. I mean entirely against run of play as it was the first time we were in their box in the second half.
The overall picture didn't change much as Wigan still looked more threatening but we made more visits near Jaaskelainen too and we successfully took one of our chances. The delivery with pinpoint accuracy from Ward ended with McGoldrick's header. Real kick in the teeth for Wigan players.
It's even hard to praise any Town player for the second half performance (apart from Bialkowski) as we looked really abject at times but substitutions turned out to be bang perfect.
If Mick ever needed an evidence that Chambers isn't right back that was the one today. But he'll still play him against Fulham.
I'd still nominate Bialkowski as our MOTM as he seemed really busy particularly in the second half.
We have won. An odd undeserved win but 3 points are making this weekend better for a change. Still though I can't say that much has changed. Yes he has altered our line-up today but this team looked like a bunch of strangers after Wigan scored an equaliser. No cohesion, no direction, nothing. We somehow got away with that today but let's not fool ourselves that something has clicked today. In my prediction it's still a relegation battle this season as we can't play as we did for the large parts today.
I can't even say that fighting spirit brought us back into the game with two second half goals as Pitman's one was bang random.
Most baffling aspect of todays game is how we 'transformed' from a team in the first 15-20 minutes into the one that badly struggled afterwards.
3 points though is what we take today, what we badly needed given our slide down the table.
Bluemike thank you for your companion.

Re: Wigan Athletic v Ipswich Town preview and matchday thread
Mach indeed that was a real funny game to analyse. It all started so well, from the moment we saw the starting Eleven in the pub (with the exception of Kenlock) we all hoped and believed a better afternoon was ahead and the opening 20/25 minutes backed that theory up. Town came out of the blocks flying and were cutting through the Wigan defence at will, at a very early stage it was clear to see our movement and attacking options were so much better than what we have witnessed for months, Williams, Lawrence, Pitman & Sears were having a field day. It took a helping hand from the referee to give us a lead within the first 10 minutes and having seen it again on TV we seem to have got one of those lucky decisions back in our favour that I feel we were owed as he pointed to the spot for a very soft challenge on Lawrence. It was exactly the start we needed to settle our nerves.
A couple of minutes later it really should have been Two as Lawrence capitalised on a mistake in the Wigan defence to find himself clean through but his first touch let him down and the keeper rushed off his line to smother the danger. Bart had been a virtual spectator in the opening 15 minutes as we pinged the ball around with a refreshing confidence, young Dozzell & chambers saw poor efforts come to nothing as Wigan began to get into the game. Sure enough the equaliser came from a freekick which I felt was a little harsh on us as Sears boot was hardly dangerous but I guess they are often given, Bart made a hell of a save from the deflected kick but it was the very impressive Wildschut who reacted to fire home the rebound as Towns defenders stood flat footed. The goal saw Wigan finish the half much the stronger and a couple more half chances were either wide or saved by Bart. Although it was Town that so nearly got back in front as Williams effort came back off the inside of the post and away to safety.
We had started so well and looked really up for it but the second quarter of the game definitely belonged to Wigan, Wildschut was causing us big problems every time he got the ball particularly against Chambers while our early promise up front had ceased somewhat as we struggled to keep it going.
The second half was largely played out in terrible thick fog and at times it was hard to make out what was going on at Barts end of the field, what was clear was that Wigan were running the show and we really had failed to come out for the second half. Wildschut semed to be having a pop at goal every couple of minutes as he really tore chambers a new arsehole, he was getting ripped to bits time after time. Bart had been really busy and had made 2 or 3 fairly routine saves, however there was nothing he could to stop Wildschut grabbing his second of the game, leaving Chambers and surprisingly Webser floundering we could just about make him out firing home from a tight angle, it really did look and feel like another day much like so many others this season, we had not had a look in all second half. In fairness to MM the changes of Bru & McGoldrick started to have an affect and out of nowhere we got back level, the ball somehow found its way to Didsy who laid it off to Pitman to fire home his second and send us all into raptures such was the unlikliehood of us scoring.
The game was now a little more even with both teams trying to get forward, Ward had been brought on and it was the sub who ultimately had a big hand in our winner, another sub Bru sent a raking cross field ball to Ward who took the ball on a bit before firing in a top notch cross onto the head of Didsy who crashed it home via the post, this time we really did erupt, all I can remember was dancing along the aisle with Mach like a couple of contestants on celebrity come dancing, it was so unexpected but was just "one of those moments". thankfully we saw out the remaining couple of minutes to claim a crucial win.
Bart (7) Chambers (4) Webster (6) Berra(6) Knudsen (6) Skuse (6) Dozzell (5) Lawrence (7) Williams (6) Sears (6) Pitman (7)
SUBS :- Bru (6) Ward (7) Didsy (7)
Shed asked if this could be a turning point, overall I doubt it very much, there was still so much wrong, I.E. Chambers being ripped apart and the way we allowed a poor team to dominate us after such a good start, that said we never gave up and somehow ground out the win when all looked lost, that has to be praised. We went with pretty much a team everyone was happy with and for 25 minutes ran the show, if we could replicate that then yes it could well be a pivotal turning point althouhg it wasn't until the subs came on that we looked like turning it around so Mm has a fair few decisions to make for Fulham on Boxing day but if we can only string Two wins together it will give us confidence that we badly need, with Two home games coming up we have the chance to get a run going, lets not blow it again. Great away supoort today of over 500 on a cold, dank day with thick fog making visibilty hard at times. A pleasure as always Mach. COYB'S
