FA Cup 3rd Round - Replay

Tuesday 17th January 2017 – 20:05 (Live on BBC One)

Sincil Bank

A big thanks to ‘Herforder’ who is stepping into Jamma’s role for the next few weeks while the latter is off to Australia. (One can only assume what crimes he has done to be sent to that large Convict Colony)

Opening Thought – Herforder

I'm honoured to be standing in for James whilst he heads Down Under for some well earned R&R, and all that Oz sunshine. Not in the least bit envious, and will attempt to do him justice!

What a difference a week makes in the fortunes of our beloved club? From the toxic atmosphere and vitriolic comments following our FA Cup draw against non-league Lincoln, it was almost the polar opposite as we set about Blackburn Rovers. In what what was a vastly improved team - and individuals' - performance, the Portman Road faithful were sent home with not only a very precious 3 points, but having a little of their faith and sanity restored Despite contriving to gift a fairly ordinary Blackburn team two goals, with young Tom Lawrence on fire and almost single-handledly driving the team's attacking momentum, we edged over the line. His 30 yard 'worldie'' strike was well worth anyone's entrance money; whilst good old 'one mistake a game' Christophe Berra redeemed himself with a classic far post run from a flick on. Not at all certain about the soft penalty given against Adam Webster, but it's about decision making when under pressure, and he'll no doubt learn and move on from it. If anything, Josh Emmanuel's challenge right at the death seemed a more convincing pen shout, but we got away with it and avoided snatching a draw from the jaws of what, in the end, was a thoroughly deserved victory. Well done to us all!

So onwards to Sincil Bank and the mighty Imps on Tuesday night - a match so nicely set up that the BBC have decided to expose it to the Nation! Funnily enough of the five or so occasions our FA Cup exploits have featured on the Beeb, our only win was the Cup itself. No doubt, however, that it will be another blood and thunder encounter, will Lincoln supporters in a frenzy and willing their lads to victory, whilst seeing a lucrative home tie against Brighton just over the horizon. I'm pretty sure that MM and the team will be keen to redress our fairly limp home performance, put on a decent show for the cameras and, importantly, want to win the match and progress. That means staying focussed, ignoring the media circus and playing the match and not the occasion. If we do get past them, and given Brighton's clear promotion priority, then an appearance in the 5th round might not be as barmy as we might have predicted! But, wait, that's surely tempting fate! So, feet firmly planted, and back to that well worn cliche, one game at a time. However, with some confidence and belief restored, and with a real desire to win, I think we should prove too strong for the on the night and come away with a victory to send us onwards and upwards. Given the inconsistent sort of season we've been having, progressing in this competition becomes increasingly more attractive.

Finally, welcome to striker Kieffer Moore, from The Land of the Giants - well actually Forest Green. With MM still searching for a higher-profile replacement for Daryl Murphy, Kieffer Moore might be seen as one for the future. That 'future' might well start at 'Uddersfield next week!

The Opposition – Lincoln City

Image

Lincoln City formed officially as an amateur association in 1884 after the disbanding of Lincoln Rovers (formerly Lincoln Recreation).

Lincoln soon helped to form what was then the Second Division in the 1892–93 season, as an increasing number of clubs wished to join the Football League. The first game at Sincil Bank was in 1895, after the club moved from the John O'Gaunts Ground, and ended in a friendly draw with local rivals Gainsborough Trinity.

Up until the 1920s, Lincoln spent most of their time swinging between the Second Division and the more localised leagues, the Midland and also the Central league. After then, however, in the 1921–22 season, Lincoln, along with several other clubs from the Central and Midland leagues, founded the Third Division (North). The newly founded league and the Second Division would take turns in becoming Lincoln's home up until the early 1960s, when they would drop a further division to the Fourth Division in the 1962–63 season.

Their championship honours include three Division 3 (North) championships, in 1931–32, 1947–48 and 1951–52, and a Division 4 (now League Two) championship in 1975–76 (when they were managed by future England manager Graham Taylor).

It was the 1975–76 season when the club broke the record for most points for a whole season, when 2 instead of 3 points were awarded for a win, with 74 points in total (this is the record amount of points achieved under the 2-point system); the record of winning the most games (32) and losing the fewest (4) was also set. City also become the first club in nearly a decade to score over 100 league goals (111 in total). They also won 21 out of 23 home league games in this season (the other 2 were drawn) and won 11 games away from home, another impressive return from the club. It was the season where, Graham Taylor recalls, "teams were petrified of coming to Sincil Bank".

In 1982, and again in 1983, Lincoln narrowly missed out on promotion to the Second Division. In 1985, Lincoln were the opposition at Bradford City when the Bradford City stadium fire claimed the lives of 56 spectators – two of them, Bill Stacey and Jim West, were Lincoln fans, and subsequently these fans had the Stacey West stand named after them.

Lincoln were relegated on the last day of the following season, and the year after that they became the first team to suffer automatic relegation from the Football League. This was a dramatic decline for a club who had almost reached the Second Division four years earlier and has been linked to the trauma arising from the disaster. This marked the fourth occasion on which Lincoln were demoted from the Football League, a record that still stands.

They regained their Football League place automatically via promotion as champions of the Conference (previously it was done by re-election) at the first attempt, with a long ball game devised by eccentric manager Colin Murphy, and held on to it until the end of the 2010–11 season. On 8 September 1990, Lincoln were the opposition when David Longhurst suffered a fatal heart attack during the first half of a game against York City at Bootham Crescent.

On 3 May 2002, Lincoln successfully petitioned to go into administration but the financial crisis would leave the First Team squad bereft of players as the day saw five senior players released at the end of their contracts, with a sixth departing for Leyton Orient. A hectic day finished with confirmation of Keith Alexander's official appointment as team manager.

In 2002–03, Alexander was given the task of keeping the team in the Football League. He confounded the many pundits and fans who believed that Lincoln would be relegated and sent out of business due to financial irregularities. With a team made up of cheap ex-non-league players and the lower-paid members of the previous season's squad, he managed to take them to the play-off final, which they lost to Bournemouth. The team were rewarded with a civil reception in Lincoln, and an open-top bus ride through Lincoln, an event that was usually reserved for the winners of such competitions but was awarded to the team because of the massive achievement.

In 2003–04, Alexander again proved the critics wrong by coaching the Imps to another play-off position, this time losing to eventual winners Huddersfield Town in the semi-finals. Alexander, one of the very few black managers in the Football League, had a very serious brain injury (a cerebral aneurysm) halfway through the season, but made a full recovery. In the 2004–05 season, they again qualified for the play-offs, for a third year running, and in the semi-finals Lincoln beat Macclesfield Town 2–1 on aggregate over two legs but lost in the final against Southend United 2–0 after extra time.

In the 2005–06 season, the club finished 7th in League 2 after only losing 3 games in the New Year. Lincoln were to face local neighbours Grimsby Town in the play-offs, a side they had beaten 5–0 at Sincil Bank earlier in the season. However, once again it was not to be, as Lincoln lost 3–1 on aggregate to become the first team ever to lose four consecutive play-off competitions.

Keith Alexander left his position as manager of Lincoln City by mutual consent on 24 May 2006, stating that he could take the club no further, and shortly after, on 15 June, John Schofield was appointed his successor. For the fifth year in a row, but under a different manager, Lincoln City reached the League Two play-offs, after finishing 5th in the league (the highest position in which they have qualified for the play-offs). Once again, however, they lost, this time to Bristol Rovers in the semi-finals, courtesy of a 2–1 defeat away and a 3–5 defeat at home. The failure to succeed in five successive play-off competitions is a record for any club.

After a run of nine losses and a draw in the final ten games, Lincoln City were relegated from League Two on the last day of the 2010–2011 season, finishing in 23rd place.

Lincoln City have played in the Conference Premier since the 2011–12 season.

Final Thought - Bluemike

As Herforder rightly says in his excellent opening piece, "what a difference a week makes" from the humbling experience of being outplayed by Lincoln we were treated to a pretty good attempt at playing proper football as we got the better of a Blackburn Rovers side who had just had Two good results against Huddersfield & Newcastle Utd who they defeated for the second time in a matter of weeks, so they may be nothing special but better teams than us have failed against them.

I really like the 3-5-2 formation, it suits the players we have so much better and we saw that in the performance of our skipper Chambo, he led the team superbly and had one of his best games for many a week, add to that the exciting prospects of Emmanuel & Kenlock (when fit) being used as Wing backs and I think we have stumbled across something that could work so well, whether MM sticks with it remains to be seen as he has turnde into another form of the "Tinkerman" in recent months.

Much is written of the fans frustrations with regard to our kids and how they are used etc, many feel they are supressed and held back from progressing and that they should be used more, well in actual fact the reality is we ARE bringing the kids through and into the first team, it is happening more than people give the club credit for. Josh Emmanuel, Myles Kenlock and Andre Dozzell are all getting games now and pretty much all at the same time which is a pretty brave thing to be doing, people say they will take a few errors and defeats if it means kids getting their chance but I don't see much evidence of that to be fair, their is still a great deal of impatience when things do not go our way, we need to stick with it, let's not forget too that Teddy Bishop is only a kid and but for injuries would have been in there too, the next crop are coming through too with the very exciting prospect Ben Morris & Patrick Webber on the bench against Blackburn.

So we have the prospect of being embarrassed on TV against Lincoln City in the FA Cup replay Tuesday evening, nope not a chance, we wil get the job done this time and progress to a 4th Round tie with Brighton, they had their chance and failed to take it, playing away suits us much better and Twon will be too strong for the Imps this time around. I'm looking forward to visiting another new ground and hopefully a continuation of the great support and atmosphere we witnessed Saturday, after all we are the 12th man. COYB'S!

Will be my first visit to Sincil Bank and looking forward to it.
Really not sure what to predict for this replay but one thing is for sure Town will have to play better than they did in the first game if they want to progress to the next round.
Will go for a 2-1 victory for Town, hopefully in 90 minutes as I would like a few hours kip on Tuesday night.

Looking forward to this game, should be a good trip. I am working from our office in Leicestershire so making the reasonably short journey accross once I finish. Am going to the match on my own because of this so if anyone on here is meeting up for a pre match pint let me know, haven't actually met anyone from here before so would be good to say hello. Failing that I will just follow the blue and white crowds!

I'm currently in Spain so can't make this one which is a shame as Lincoln is little over an hour up the road from home in Leicestershire, and a ground I've not been to before. Could also have travelled up with Charlton367 and met Bluemike for a couple of beers, butwill have to make do with watching the game on tv.

I'm hoping Mick will put out a strong side and show all those watching that we can play decent football and aren't as bad as we looked the last time the teams met at Portman Road.

A decent cup run would do so much for player and team morale and a win at Lincoln would set up a home tie against a Brighton team with more focus on promotion with the winners going into the 5th round.

How good would that be.

I'm going for a 3-0 win.

With the TV cameras there live, I'm sure MM will not want to be embarrassed. Also, possible two wins in a row.... It could happen.

Looking forward to the game and hopefully a good performance to build on the win from Saturday.

Right off the bat went in favor of a Lincoln win. It's there (a place in Round Four) for whoever wants it more, and after coming so close to victory in the first game and with a reasonable opportunity of achieving one of the greatest moments in club history, imagine they'll be more motivated than ourselves.

McCarthy took it seriously last time out but will that remain consistent in this replay game ? Hope once again to see a strong squad and entertainment for both sets of support, but even if goes to extra time, believe Lincoln can achieve victory on the night. No passage beyond Round 3 since 2009 if correct and maybe that sorry statistic will continue for another year when the event is over. Would hope to be proved wrong obviously but Lincoln will realize enough our soft underbelly and move in for a full blooded assault.

Lincoln City 2 Ipswich 1

Hi Charlton, would be good to meet for a pre match beer, I am on the coach on this occasion so basically get taken straight to the ground and I have no idea of ETA, I found the following on Lincoln's website which may be of some use.
Neil Le Milliere a visiting Exeter City fan adds; 'away supporters are admitted to the Supporters Club at the Club (called the Trust Suite) behind the South Park Stand'. Otherwise there are plenty of good pubs to be found if you head along the High Street towards the town centre, John Bennett a visiting Bristol Rovers supporter recommends the Golden Eagle, whilst Jon Morley adds; 'The Wetherspoon's pub called 'The Ritz' serves reasonably priced food and ales'. Also near to the railway station is the Treaty of Commerce. All these three pubs are located on the High Street and are listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide.
It may well be that the supporters club at the ground is the best option as am unsure as to how far away the pubs actually are.

I really hope we win this comfortably. Of course I'll take a scrappy win, but I'll be embarrassed if we lose.

Marko, I'd like to think the game is being broadcast in Scotland...to demonstrate how to play football. Alas, it is Ipswich vs Lincoln...so it won't be very different from what you're used to seeing up there. I assume the match will be in colour?...for those who have colour televisions?

Lincoln 1 v 3 Ipswich

Depending on who Mick puts out there will depend on the teams showing. If he is interested in winning, the squad should reflect that, if not.......... ! My optimistic prediction Ipswich 2 - 1 win
