Granted the first two games are expected to be tough regardless, but every point matters at the end of the season, and Fulham at home could be an important one.
We need players in as soon as possible and we've been seemingly beaten to the draw time after time by the teams we will be competing with for survival. Hopefully those teams will fill their ranks first and leave the scraps for us, problem is, that's the scraps and we'll be lucky if there's much left.
On top of it all, the Szmodics affair looks like it's made a mockery of our club.

Honestly we don't really know the details of this, nobody at our club has confirmed anything. For all we know its a giant smokescreen for some other players that we have been negotiating about for weeks now. It's great to have a lively chat on here but I'm not going to get all frustrated based on unconfirmed rumours and speculation. Our back office team has shown itself to be astute time and time again. I'm backing them to continue in that vein.Bluemike wrote: ↑Wed Aug 14, 2024 9:48 amI completely agree, we should have walked away 2 weeks ago and turned our attention to a better player..... We had one hell of a transfer window January 2023, but if I'm brutally honest, we've made hashes and disappointed in the two windows since then.
A lot of that may be to do with hands being tied financially with FFP, and the higher wage demands that we don't seem to want to meet in order to keep things fair and harmonious in the squad. I get all that, but it's such a critical window, everyone is going to be understandably nervous.

Re: Transfer Rumours - New Signings for Towns Premier League Squad 2024/25
We needed to be a lot lot stronger as a squad, at this moment in time we are weaker as a squad. Greaves is the one big improvement, Hutchinson was here already so no stronger there, Delap replaces Hirst, no stronger there, Muric a swap for Hladky, no stronger there, in fact weaker in some aspects, Townsend just back up squad player so doesn't strengthen the first team, Johnson looks ok but any better than Tuanzebe at RB ? Not for me. Add to that we've lost Sarmiento, Travis and for a while Broadhead. It's not a great position and I'm sure KM isn't particularly happy at present.

I'm with you there, Muric could be massive for us this season, but equally it could not work, he is still an inexperienced and unknown quantity, and Hladky probably continues to be underrated.
This season's Hutchinson is hopefully better than last season's version and I wouldn't worry about losing Travis and Sarmiento, we will likely equal or trump their abilities with loans this term.
Delap obviously has impressed the club enough to spend big, I hope he proves his valuation and succeeds, but it could be a couple of seasons too soon for him at this level, he's raw. The question also over Delap is would we have been as enthusiastically in for him had we known we'd miss on Philogene, who is/was the far more ready of the two to step up (in my opinion)?
Big fan of Broadhead's but I think he'd only ever be a bit part player in the Premiership, he's not sharp or fit enough to play 30+ games at a required level, so a player to replace him is imperative. Szmodics is to trump Chaplin in my opinion, and very important as Delap/Hirst are not big goal contributors.
And central mid... if Hutchinson is continually improving, then Morsy and Luongo, at turning 33 and 32 respectively, have to be on the other side of that hill? Surely?

One thing that really stands out for me was McKenna's comments a few weeks back stating we needed several more players. Sure, it's possible we'll still get 'several' in before the window closes, but it seems unlikely at this point.
Another thing to consider, is the squad is already thin with Hirst/Broadhead out. What if we lose more to injuries? Hate to say it, but I'm sure we'll pick up more injuries with the Premier League being so much more demanding physically.
I think it's completely acceptable to be nervous and concerned about the lack of strengthening, but I know MA and staff have been working their socks off to make things happen. There's just not enough time for promoted clubs to strengthen before the season starts, unless they have loads of cash and can spend at will without infringing FFP.

What hurts is teams like Forrest and Brentford hoovering up players that would be so crucial to us, but that's the attraction for them, it has a double effect of weakening their opponents too. That's why we needed to be savvy and find players that aren't on other team's radars, sadly we haven't managed that yet.

Close to signing Cajuste because he's failed a Medical at Brentford, you couldn't make it up !!

I should never have re-entered this thread anyway. I think we've been linked with 247 players and have signed 6 of them, I'm more likely to get solid information from reading McKenna's horoscope!

Reckon there is more to this than meets the eye. I don't believe we will be desperate to bring on a crock.
Also as for the earlier comment about Premiership being more demanding. Well is it? 38 games instead of 46, later entry into cup competitions, better reserve comps for bringing through players returning from injury.
Maybe generally fitter bodies are needed but who is to say that we don't already have them.
Obvs Morsy & Luongo won't go on for ever but we have been accumulating players at or just before prime age for fitness. We are not a team of old men.

Yeah, we are bang mid table with average age. Town 25.7 years, league average 26.
EDIT: That makes me feel old

I think most of the world's top footballers are also top athletes. When comparing Premier League matches with other matches in the EFL, it's evident the pace of the Prem matches is much, much faster.Dubai Blue wrote: ↑Wed Aug 14, 2024 3:13 pm

As far as the fitness of our squad, well we haven't played a match yet and two of our starters are injured. Hirst was injured most of last season. Not saying we don't have the ability to push on, but that extra effort will probably lead to more injuries. Remember, every match will be like a cup final.

Hopefully this is true Mike.
friend of mine who works with the Swedish u21s text me saying that the paperwork breakdown was Brentford trying to Negotiate a lower buying price and getting Napoli to pay a higher percent of his wages.

The Brentford deal involved purchasing after the loan and I heard they couldn't agree on the money which was why Brentford pulled out. Our prospective deal is just for a loan.

This will be sad if true - Leicester leading the race for Skipp.
I’d really like him here.

I’m pretty sure we’ll still have a few irons in the fire and shouldn’t get despondent yet. I’m optimistic our squad will have as many as 4 new players added by the end of the month.

As you know I’m a big admirer of Jack Clarke and would love to see him at Portman Road. He’s a class act definitely bound for the Premier League and a sound investment to make money on, unlike Sammier Szmodics whose value will never increase.Bluemike wrote: ↑Wed Aug 14, 2024 9:48 amI completely agree, we should have walked away 2 weeks ago and turned our attention to a better player..... That said I’m pleased we’ve not walked away from the deal even if we do end up paying over the odds which looks highly probable. The reason I feel this way is because I think his goals could be the difference in Town staying up or being relegated, and if that’s the case the transfer fee would be well and truly repaid many times over.

Cajuste certainly looks a good player and looking at the Brentford forum they seem to think we have a very good signing on our hands, interestingly they mention this is the second potential signing to fail a medical at the club having barely happened before.
