Phillips, he was bloody awful at West Ham. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of the Phillips from 3 years ago, but is that the Phillips we would be getting?

Exactly my thoughts. As you say he was an absolute flop during his loan spell at West Ham. If he does sign then hopefully we will get the Leeds version.

According to Watson he implies club are considering move now for Cajuste.. “ It's understood the Blues are now assessing whether to continue with advanced talks to sign Swedish international midfielder Jens Cajuste on loan from Napoli.”

Thought we needed two in there but maybe they planned to use just one loan in CM or it was one or the other.

Well if anyone can get him back on the tracks, it's McKenna.

But just maybe we should be looking at another centre mid too, just in case his injuries or form problems reappear...

Now that would remove some risk from the situation!

I didn't expect to see Phillips arriving here, potentially a massive signing, he has had a tough time and needs to reset his career, what better place to do it ? McKenna is the ideal manager to rekindle his form, you don't suddenly become a bad player at his age.

Ipswich Town have agreed a deal to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on a season-long loan.

The England international is expected to have a medical with the newly-promoted Premier League club on Thursday.

The 28-year-old is understood to have been impressed with the project after discussions with boss Kieran McKenna and chairman Mark Ashton.

City are understood to be paying a portion of his wages.

The ex-Leeds player chose Ipswich over a number of other Premier League clubs.

Ipswich also remain in discussions about their loan deal for midfielder Jens Cajuste from Napoli.

Phillips has endured a tough two years since joining City, starting just six games in all competitions after Pep Guardiola admitted he "struggles to see" the midfielder in his side.

The 28-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham but started just three games, while he was sent off in a defeat at Nottingham Forest.

Phillips' struggles at club level contributed to him being dropped from the England squad ahead of Euro 2024, with his last international appearance coming in November 2023.

Do you not see Phillips and Morsy being very similar players? Don't you think we need someone like Cajuste to do the 8 role?

It will be very interesting to see what McKenna comes up with, can Morsy push on, will those two be initially rotated. It's a jigsaw that now has more pieces, but I'm not sure just how they fit.

I heard he had some off the field personal life challenges when at WH, and got injured.
Apparently he is ready to prove people wrong, of course that is a cliche but he has a great manager in KM now, AND a really great dressing room - it should be the right reciepe.

Could be a brilliant signing and make a real difference

For me Phillips loss of form was all linked to his loss of confidence caused by Guadiola’s public criticism in particular about his weight. West Ham never really welcomed him there either and with his confidence so low it went from bad to worse. I think with McKenna managing him and him knowing he’s surrounded by far less experienced players he will rise to the challenge and give it his all. If he does his career can only go one way. Personally I hope we have a buy option built into the loan deal because if McKenna does manage to turn his career round his value could more than double its current level over the course of a season.

I wish him well and hopefully the town fans will give him loads of encouragement because for sure opponents fans will almost certainly give him some stick.

I think we’ll find with Phillips alongside Morsy this will allow Sam to push forward more knowing he has solid cover behind him. It could even release Morsy to score more goals. At the moment I’m very happy with this signing.

It could of course also be a signing that impacts on other potential signings feeling more confident about joining us.

Thought there would be bigger clubs than Town chasing this guy but for me a brilliant signing.
Lost his way a bit over last few seasons. Not good enough for Man City and struggled a touch at West Ham. There is a top player in there though and McKenna will find it again.
I'm a bit more hopeful that in the next few weeks things will bottom out and Town will be fine.
Hopefully now getting players who have top level experience and been over the course as opposed to top EFL players.

No buy option, I suspect mainly becuase he is on 150k P/W at city so out of out budget but also he is suprisingly 28 years old, so not a great deal of sell on value there.

We'd have to finish in the top 6, maybe even top 4 to even consider keeping him beyond this season I should think, such would be the ludicrous finances involved.

Whilst it's understood that there is no buy clause included it would be crazy not to have an option in there somewhere, especially if we expect him to be crucial lynchpin to our midfield this season. And I would imagine it will be in there somewhere. Whether we take that option or can afford to do so is a question for 2025 IMO.

I just think that would be far too complicated and protracted Dubai. Nobody really knows his value at the moment, so Ipswich won't and can't afford to offer anywhere near what City or Phillips would want, even as a hypothetical.

To put it in to perspective, Phillips made the same money last season as our whole squad combined!! And that contract runs for another 4 seasons, so he's not going to be bought out of it lightly.

City paid £42m for him and are hoping a good season with Town would get his value heading back in that direction, so there is little incentive for them to agree to a sale while his stock is low.

It's just another example how the big clubs of the division have the rest of the football pyramid firmly held by their plums.

Reckon Phillips will be great for you guys.

I did want him at Everton but think it was just too risky based on the cost for a loan and his wages and his form in recent years.

How many players are we supposed to be in talks with at the monent, someone’s very busy or do we have a team of negotiators on the case. Who will be next, will it be Chelsea striker Armando Broja, Jens Cajuste from Napoli. Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn Rovers, Oliver Skipp from Tottenham, Jack Clarke from Sunderland or someone else we’ve not even got on our radar.

What ever happens next I don’t think our shopping is done yet.

Doubt it! Probably get hit with another deduction by all accounts mate. Just can’t see where our goals will come from either.

Expecting very similar to last season.

Calvert-Lewin showing small signs of confidence returning.

Well best of luck to you, unless you're in a scrap with Town for 17th spot come April, in which case I wish you all manner of problems!!

I do tend to agree that Broja has looked pretty sh*te what I've seen of him, not raving about this one and happy if it doesn't happen.

I think Skipp is dead in the water too with this morning's news of Two possible new midfielders.
